Entertainment Weekly were lucky enough to be in attendance for Disney's Hall H presentation and have shared their verdict on the first footage from
The Lone Ranger. According to the site, the film has a much heavier and more ominous tone than previous Gore Verbinski/Johnny Depp collaboration, the
Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Talking of Depp, there has been some controversy over the fact that he is playing a Native American and the news that his character speaks in broken English (
"There come a time, Kemosabe...when good man must wear mask.") is sure to leave some riled. The site do point out that it isn't in the least bit offensive however.
The footage shown included a voice over from baddie Tom Wilkinson.
"From the time of Alexander the Great, no man could travel faster than the horse that carried him. Not anymore. Imagine time and space under the mastery of man — power that makes emperors and kings look like fools. Whoever controls this, controls the future," he says as scenes of the transcontinental railroad being constructed were played. Armie Hammer's Lone Ranger was apparently shown looking "disheveled and intense," and while there were a handful of gunslinging scenes, the focus was firmly on Depp's Tonto as he was shown uncoupling a train car while hanging underneath. Helena Bonham Carter was spotted, as were some bloody and impressive train accidents. They finish their report by saying that, "Those looking for a darker take on The Lone Ranger will be pleased by the intense tone and focus on action over humor."
