Hiro Hamada:
Super early exploration drawings of Hiro.. This was me trying to cast a wide net in terms of his whole look and style..

Baymax:
Some iterations of baymax’s armor that never made it but was fun to design!

GoGo Tomago:
Some early exploration on Gogo.. Disney’s first Korean character, I drew upon my experience with “tough” 누나 stereotypes while mixing it in with the bike messenger/trick culture of San Francisco~ I also wanted to step away from the stereotypical “disney” female proportion and tried to caricature the typical “radish” ankle korean girl type (ask some Korean friends and they’ll let you know what that means..) I read up on a article that the reason why korean speed skaters are so great at speed skating might have to do with their natural proportions.. which matched perfectly with Gogo’s skating attribute!
*although I saw tattoos on almost every San Franciscan female bike messenger on the internet, we had to get rid of the tattoos!

Fred:
Some early explorations for Fred! I always thought of him as one of those snowboarders who glide effortlessly down the slopes while just sporting a tshirt* A typical “dude” archetype, some of the usual references were looked at.. that mixed with his nerdy passion for Japanese Kaiju and comics we got Fred!

Honey Lemon:
Some early iterations of Honey Lemon!!! In terms of design she was the toughest to crack.. How to design a girl who is of latino descent, loves japanese fashion, while also is a geek about chemical engineering? I had a tough time imagining a person like that so I relied heavily on Lorelay’s contribution on costume and coloring to help define that right mixture~ There is of course some inspiration from certain actresses but I also was inspired by my calarts friends Lorelay and Jennifer Hager, both amazing artists at Disney Feature..

Wasabi:
Some early iterations of wasabi when he used to be a sushi chef! Although his personality later changed over the course of the story development, I had a lot of fun designing him at this stage~ He used to be a lot more bigger in relation to the team; I wanted a sense of almost zen like solidarity for them..

With all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Big Hero 6” is an action-packed comedy-adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius—thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tamago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action, “Big Hero 6” is directed by Don Hall (“Winnie the Pooh”) and Chris Williams (“Bolt”), and produced by Roy Conli (“Tangled”). The film hits theaters in 3D on November 7, 2014.

Saw it the other day. Remember when everyone was a fan of Groot after watching GotG? Everyone was a fan of Baymax after watching the movie.

*spoiler post*

This movie was a huge rip on Avengers. Baymax was obviously Ironman, flying and landing like Ironman all the time. Flying into the portal at the end and falling backward after letting go of the pod just like Ironman falling backward after letting go of the bomb.

Marvel should sue Disney.
