X-MEN '97: Former Showrunner Beau DeMayo Claims Marvel Pushed Back Against Darkening Storm And Sunspot's Skin

X-Men '97 season 1 showrunner Beau DeMayo has shared some pretty wild accusations about the portrayal of Storm and Sunspot in the Disney+ series, suggesting Marvel Studios tried to whitewash them both.

In recent weeks, former X-Men '97 showrunner Beau DeMayo has doubled down on exposing some of the alleged injustices he faced while working at Marvel Studios. Today, he's shared some pretty bold claims about the portrayal of Storm in the Disney+ series.

Much has been said about the character being whitewashed on screen; even Dark Phoenix star Alexandra Shipp has shared her hope for a darker-skinned actress to play Ororo Munroe on screen.

According to DeMayo, "The [X-Men '97] crew and I fought hard to have Storm’s skin tone darker and more accurate to her heritage versus [X-Men: The Animated Series]."

"Marvel noted that if we’re being so accurate about her skin color, then Storm shouldn’t have white hair either," he added. "These sort of micro-aggressive notes are designed to domino backwards to kill the initial idea, as Marvel knows we’re not changing Storm’s hair color."

DeMayo added, "Then came the usual racist 'Well if Storm’s too dark, we won’t be able to see her in nighttime or dark scenes.' We went ahead and did it anyway. Turns out there’s a thing in animation called 'lighting.'"

He'd later address one of X-Men '97's biggest controversies, the apparent whitewashing of Afro-Brazillian character Robert da Costa, a.k.a. Sunspot. DeMayo was heavily criticised for that before the show's release and even left social media for a time due to the backlash.

Now, though, he says, "Finally can address this! Marvel insisted he be Latino. I did push to darken his skin to reflect his Afro-Brazilian heritage but was given a flat-out 'No.'"

DeMayo has said he's doing an AMA later this week and also started taking interviews with some YouTube channels, so we're sure he'll have more to save very soon.

All episodes of X-Men '97 are now streaming on Disney+.

@AllsGood - There's too many to call out individuals, but I'm curious what the answer to "review bombing doesn't exist" when the show isn't even out yet.

How are you reviewing with true intentions a show that doesn't exist yet? And furthermore WHAT exactly don't these people like?

@AllsGood - I see the number but not a single review or amount of reviews. Am I losing my mind or is Rotten tomatoes hiding them already?

@TheyDont - Shouldn't be any, doesn't matter if positive or negative, however there may be some who were invited or a plus one for the advance screening this week for critics but the sort likely to attend that a likely to be fair and ballanced or biased in favour. No show with the talent levels of that cast and production values in display (even if you think it could be better or not to your taste) would get only half a star from someone at an exclusive purple carpet event...

...the big giveaway however is how many of them saying they watched the first two episodes when the premiere for critics was four and the first two online for viewers not out yet.

So, yes, seen them myself and some extremely abvious by language troll posts have been removed from view (even tho still seem to be counted in the score by my math) and blatant troll posts.

That said don't trust any of the 5 star ones as legit either, only a few that look like they could have been fair critiques after having seen it but all vague enough in language they look like using quotes from the critic twitter posts so even then doubt it

So again should be no score and no user reviews on display at least until after the critic reviews get unlocked/shown but is clear enough evidence that there are fools/tools out there who post reviews without watching for whatever reason which hardly makes the actual score when it lands trustworthy where ever any land for TV shows (at least they have the verified as having had a ticket thing for movies now).

@SATW42 - They have already started hiding obvious fake reviews, start that process a few hours ago after the first half dozen went up both positive and negative that I saw and read before bein hidden and the wording made it clear they were trolling or defending sans having watched at all. The number of reviews has been over 30 for a while for me in regard to visible reviews but the 74% thing states over 100 been submitted.
grendelthing
grendelthing - 9/18/2024, 3:47 PM
@regularmovieguy - That 74% is audience score, not critics score. General audiences shouldn't have screeners.
mountainman
mountainman - 9/18/2024, 3:51 PM
@AllsGood - In reality, most of people who haven’t seen it are review inflating and a much smaller number are bombing.

The easiest way to prevent this is for RT and other review sites to not open up reviews until a show is released.

But thanks for proving that review inflating is occurring at a higher rate than review bombing for this one.
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 9/18/2024, 3:57 PM
@grendelthing

You could be a Twitter account with followers and get a screener. A YouTuber. You can show that to friends and family.

If you have some sort of social media and/or marketing presence or captive audience you can get screeners. Wouldn’t surprise me if RT’s “super reviewers” get screeners.

@abd00bie - its because everyone bases what is worth watching vs what isnt on early reviews. Especially rotten tomatoes. So they want to get thr word out on it so people tune in to the premiere for big view numbers

mountainman
mountainman - 9/18/2024, 4:31 PM
@SATW42 - I have even said on this forum that I enjoyed the most recent MCU movie.

I just don’t get why this all has to be so damn tribal.

I didn’t even say anything bad about this show in this thread. Just a fact that, if we are considering early fan reviews to be illegitimate, that more illegitimate positive reviews are coming in than negative ones.

And yes Disney will very likely end this year as the top earning movie studio. Last year they weren’t. I guess I’m not big on celebrating which big multi-billion dollar corrosion makes the most in a year. Seems like a silly thing for us plebs to argue about.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 9/18/2024, 4:35 PM
@bobevanz - Been watching them go up for hours then be hidden by whatever mods are playing wackamole trying to temp patch the issue caused by some idiot opening up the review system 12hrs too soon and all bar two of the 100+ reviews were either 5 star (some being honest at least in the text that they hadn't watched it yet, only trailers) or 0.5 star reviews...

...in other words the score means zero and only suggests over 70 people who haven't watched it are interested in it and generaly supportive of all things Marvel, no more than that which is meaningless...

...and over 20 people who hadn't watched it that felt the need to show how much they they hate the idea of the show they have no intention of watching, which thus give zero indication of quantifiable quality and only that it isn't for them (and in some cases from comments apparantly about hating all thing LGBT+ as they literaly say as much).

@AllsGood - What's surprising, or perhaps not, is the level of desperation from haters. I don't remember this level of hate when Echo premiered. Perhaps it was due to everyone believing it would bomb anyway. And when it didn't and was okay, despite its faults, campaigning against it was moot due to the way Disney released that show. So, this level of desperation only proves to me the haters are concerned. Agatha might just prove them wrong. But the haters were successful with The Marvels, and so they think they can sway public opinion again with Agatha.

I don't know how Agatha will overall perform as far as viewers, but the one thing is certain there is a large segment of misogynistic and homophobic people that are doing their very best to make this show as unpalpable as possible. Now, these same folks will say, "Nah, this has nothing to do with the show being female-led or having gay characters, it's about nobody asked for it." That's a boldface lie! Because you can't say Wanda-stans or Wiccan-stans wouldn't want to see this. There ARE people who want this show. They want to see a continuation of the Scarlet Witch narrative. They want to see themselves represented. So, when you say, "Nobody asked for this show." No, it's YOU who don't want this show. And the question should be, why? What's your problem? You hate females and LGBT that much? To deny them their shows. You're the one who can choose to watch or not. But don't put your insecurities on others. You shouldn't even be here in this space if you have no intention on watching. Unless your sole purpose being here is to spread hate!!
