Friday belongs to Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, but the weekend belongs to Disney's superhero film, Big Hero 6. According to Deadline, Interstellar will end up grossing $16.5M to $18M on Friday and Big Hero 6 will gross $16M. That puts Nolan's latest film on course for a $50-$52M weekend. While Disney's latest animated feature should receive a healthy bounce on Saturday from families, which pushes its estimated total to $54-$56M. It's a close race! It may come down to word-of-mouth. If that's the case, Disney's Big Hero 6 will still come out on top. Audiences gave the animated feature an 'A' CinemaScore, while Nolan's sci-fi epic only received a 'B+' CinemaScore.
Fun Fact: If these numbers hold up, Interstellar will be the first Christopher Nolan film in 12 years to not open in first place. Last time that happened was 2002's Insomnia.
