Disney Animation's John Lasseter On Marvel's BIG HERO 6 And Possible STAR WARS Features

Commenting on Disney's upcoming "loose" animated adaptation of Marvel's Big Hero 6, Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios chief John Lasseter also discusses the possibility of a Star Wars movie being developed by either company.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly ahead of D23 (which kicks off tomorrow) Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios boss John Lasseter talks about the studio's upcoming animated slate. He discusses Frozen, Pixar's The Good Dinosaur and confirms that no hand drawn features are in development. His comments on those can be read by clicking the source link below (as well as new images), but he also discusses Disney's first animated Marvel movie: Big Hero 6, which is based on an obscure Japanese miniseries. Lasseter says that the animated feature (which is scheduled for a November 7th, 2014 theatrical release) is a loose adaptation and that it's more of a Disney Animation film than a Marvel film. "It’s based upon a very short series of comic books and it’s six comic books. They’re out of the Marvel universe, but more of a Japanese manga style. We’re creating something based upon that so it’s really a Disney Animation production. A loose adaptation — like all adaptations are. They almost have to be."

Talk inevitably turned to Star Wars, which was purchased by Disney in its Lucasfilm acquisition last year. Despite Pixar starting out as the graphics division for Lucasfilm, Lasseter says not to expect them to develop an animated feature set in a galaxy far, far away. "Not really, other than Pixar has always used Skywalker Sound for all of our productions. They’re the best so we’ll always continue using them and we’re very good friends. And we always have been with [special effects house Industrial Light and Magic] as well. But other than being friends we have never needed to do anything with them. But we’re also massive Star Wars fans so we’re all very excited, as is everybody around the world, for new Star Wars films." In response to rumors that Gary Rydstrom is attached to direct an animated movie for Lucasfilm, Lasseter said that it stays entirely under Lucasfilm. Do you want to see a Star Wars feature or more Marvel from Disney Animation and/or Pixar?

Still looking forward to Big Hero 6. Love that Marvel is spreading their IPs around various mediums.

As one of the maybe 1000 people alive that actually read the Sunfire and Big Hero 6 limited series I feel confident in saying that this project likely won't turn a profit. When you choose a property to adapt because no one knows it so they can't complain about the changes you've made it is not a recipe for success.

Lucasfilm has their own animation company. Pixar and Disney wouldn't have to do anything for them, even if there were an animated film someday.

And frankly, I'd rather see Pixar continue to keep to properties that it develops itself. No adaptations, no films from outside brands, just their own stuff.

It's not really obscure and although most of both miniseries were set in Japan, it's not Japanese. It was a regular Marvel release in the U.S.

@baldric33 You don't have to know much about these guys to go to a movie like this and enjoy it. Nobody knew the backgrounds of Toy Story or Wall-E when they were first in production and they turned into box office hits.

I love Marvel for putting out movies like this and Guardians of the Galaxy. They are going to gain brand new audiences.

Ok Marvel..this is [frick]ing so easy. Why the hell are we still producing garbage animation (see that iron man turd?) when we are owned by the BIGGEST ANIMATED STUDIO OF ALL [frick]ING TIME..

Jesus christ..how about a bold move. Go after some of that A-List talent that gave us the DCAU for all those years..you have a truckload of cash...Drop all three(or massively upgrade the style and budget) weekend cartoons and give us what the hell we want. EMH was close...W&Xmen wsa awesome....JLU, Great...Hell, Get some mouse dollars and go buy the damn studio that did Young Justice, anything..just stop feeding us this crap...

sorry..rant over

Do you guys really think Disney is going to take properties they've had live action success with like any of The Avengers, and downgrade to an animated film about one of them? That's definitely not happening. And furthermore, do you guys really think Pixar of all companies, are going to downgrade themselves to making TV Shows when they've produced billion dollar films in the past? Right now, Disney themselves are doing Big Hero 6, not pixar, and any other lesser known Marvel properties the adapt in animated form will probably not be done by Pixar. Although I will definitely admit I wouldn't be against Pixar doing that, but I doubt it will happen anytime soon.

Looking forward to Big Hero 6. Paul Dini works for Marvel's animation now it's time to step their game up! Sad because Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes was actually a pretty decent show. Amazing how Marvel kills it in live action but continues to wallow in the dregs with their animated properties. Best Marvel animated I've seen was the fore-mentioned Avengers & Planet Hulk. Can we get more of that.
