Brad Bird On Superhero Trends He Wants To Shy Away From In THE INCREDIBLES 2

Brad Bird is currently making the rounds on his press tour for Disney's Tomorrowland, however, he recently stated that once his obligations on the George Clooney and Brit Robertson sci-fi adventure are complete, he'll begin work on the script for The Incredibles 2.  When asked about what story he wished to tackle in the Pixar sequel, Bird partially sidestepped the question by discussing what he didn't want to tackle.  

Said Bird, "Well, I worry if you comment too much on other movies [in your own movie] then you might just be coasting off their good will. There was a very lazy trend in comedy where somebody would start singing the theme song from The Flintstones and you're supposed to dig on it just because you recognize it. So I don't like that. I think that movies ought to work in and of themselves. However… I would say that the superhero movie turf right now is very trodden over — it's kind of like a field that's had too many games on it, and it's just dried up dirt at this point."

However, what he did share about The Incredibles 2 should be encouraging to fans.

"I think that the greatest special effect is caring about a character. A lot of movies seem to forget that, and they bring out a lot of fireballs and then wonder why the fireballs don't have that much impact, no matter how loud and how big they are. But the truth is that the fireball isn't that exciting unless you care about the person running from it."

The full interview with Bird will be available in issue 59 of Little White Lies, on sale May 7.

The Incredible's was great as poking fun at superheroes.
And now since the whole genre has blown up they could come up with some really clever parody moments for the sequel.

But I do understand where he's coming from.
I can't wait for this!

I think in the context of the discussion, he's talking about comedy and how The Incredibles was a parody of superheroes. He's saying that he can't really do that with the sequel because superhero movies are everywhere, with heir specific formulas and tropes and so it would lessen the comedic element.

Damn. So much has happened since The Incredibles came out and I still think the sequel will be better than 90 % of the stuff Marvel/Disney AND DC/WB are releasing now and in the future.

The point Bird is trying to make is that Incredibles 2 wouldn't have as big of an impact in a market where superheroes is common.

It would just be another one of those superhero movies in the eyes of some(or many).

Frozen was a good kids film, then again these are all intended for kids. Maybe I kiddy didn't like frozen as much as the incredibles because I saw them at different ages

Joking aside, I totally get what he's saying. The sequel will have to find a new angle to play on in order to distinguish itself from the plethora of cbms being produced at the moment. The "genre" has exploded, and it's increasingly difficult to be original, especially when your movie is a house of mouse property.
But I trust Bird, he's a genius.

I'm still reeling from a crazy few days of INSANE trailer awesomeness. That BvS teaser was sooooo perfect, from the themes, the imagery, the obvious influences, and what all of that means for the future of the DCU. Honestly, from that teaser alone, I'm seeing a lot more depth than in all the Marvel movies (and I love those Marvel movies, for the most part). Snyder, Terrio and Affleck are going to do something incredible with those characters.
When, we finally see Wonder Woman, I think I'm going to faint.

This is what happens when your entire film is bent on parodying a genre that's about to overflow the mainstream. Trying to do a sequel just gets lost in the shuffle.

Who cares. Big Hero 6 worked well and didn't need to parody the genre to be a successful entertaining film-and thus can continue it's story into a sequel without having to worry about being swallowed up by the state of the genre like Incredibles.

@loki668 Frozen was at least a great improvement over Disney's previous 2 fairytale films. Plus Idina Menzel voicing the main character. Can't go wrong there. Going classic theatrically-trained voice actor with the main I think is a much better way to go than this current trend of pop artist voices for singing characters. Their voices may be nice, but they don't come with the same gravitas, and I think less narrative emotion with the singing.

Damn. Looks like Bird isn't game to direct a superhero movie. He'd be great for Spiderman.

But it' about how you approach the movie. Guardians wasn't a superhero movie, it was a space comedy adventure set in a superhero world. Cap TWS was a spy thriller set in a superhero world. Dr. Strange, Black Panther and the Inhumans can all be unique properties. But at the end of the day, they are action movies. No different than Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Fast and the Furious, Mission Impossible, etc. which we don't see people complaining about.

I know but, it's fun to rile up the Frozen crowd. You never know who they are until you say something like that. Except for Diamondz. We all know he loves Frozen.





To be honest though, I haven't even seen Frozen because I can't stand films like that. I'm kind of picky with animation.

Frozen is one the most overrated animated movies of our time. You can't even put it in the same league with Pixar.

@DiAMONDZ, I knew a guy who worked in a Tesco's tech dept. Once Frozen came out on blu, that was it.

10+ screens.

Playing Frozen at volume on repeat.

From midnight Sunday/Monday to midnight Saturday/Sunday and 5 hours on Sunday.

Parents would casually drop off their kids at the tech dept and they'd sit IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FLOOR AND NOT MOVE.

Little girls wandering around the store screaming "I DON'T CARE, I DON'T CARE, I DON'T CARE..."

Frozen might be a good movie, but every single adult hates it now...

Yea..Frozen is an awful animated feature.
It's 100% hype & tripe.
Can't believe it's so beloved.

The sequel to The Incredibles is looooong overdue.
I think Brad Bird can repeat the success of the first one but he needs to be careful what he says.
After all,The Incredibles is a direct rip off of The Fantastic Four...but in a good way.

Now, this is where I bring up Man of Steel; I didn't give a [frick] about Superman, at all. Like, if he were to die at the end of the movie, it probably wouldn't even impact me that much. Snyder and Goyer thought they could spice up Superman for the modern times by making it more gritty and adding more action, which is the complete antithesis of the old movies, but could have still worked depending on how you did it. But in terms of the movie, that was one of the only things or "fireballs" they relied on; action, grittiness, and shaping him for moderns times, and it turned the movie into just another one of those movies that didn't stand out and were bland.

Therefore, I really believe that Bird is going to nail this sequel; he knows that the characters and the story are more important and should be more developed what's added in in the post-production of a movie.

You just have to find the right angle, after all Django was a western which is supposedly a dead genre. Similarly Face off and Freaky Friday are both body swop stories.

Who the hell wants to watch Incredibles 2? Specially if FF doesn't suck.

And his comment applies only to DOFP, where so many characters we didn't care about were in peril.
