INCREDIBLES 2 Director Brad Bird Isn't Interested In Making Sequels To Any Of His Other Previous Films

It's been 14 years since we last went on an adventure with the superpowered Parr family but on June 15th we'll finally see the release of Brad Bird's long-awaited Incredibles 2. By all accounts, the wait has been worth it with early reviews describing the film as equal to or even better than the first.

Don't let this fool you into thinking we'll have an Incredibles 3 to look forward to however or even a sequel to any other Bird directed films, as in a new interview with i09 Bird confirmed that while he always said he'd do another Incredibles if the story was right, he has no interest in returning to his other works.
"I'm told I need to remake everything that I've made and no one apparently wants anything new anymore. I'm a little at odds with society on that. I would like to do some new things. I feel like I've done my Ratatouille. I've done my Mission: Impossible and I've done my Iron Giant. And that's it. I'm not mad about it but it seems like it's the only thing that people want now is for you to repeat what you just did."

The Ratatouille director has always favored original projects, having only worked in a previously established franchise once, for his live-action debut Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. Outside of this, Iron Giant is his own other work that's based on pre-existing material.

Brad Bird was even Disney/LucasFilm's first choice to helm Star Wars: Episode VII but he decided instead to focus on his Damn Lindelof co-scripted science-fiction film Tomorrowland, and while that project wasn't as successful as the Academy Award winner's previous filmography, Bird is clearly still very much focused on original properties.

What do you think? Are you happy to see Bird focus on original works? Or were you hoping to get a sequel to one of his films? Leave your thoughts below.

Good for him! There's too much repetitiveness as it is in Hollywood right now!

@Nebula - just being 9 when his only other great movie came out... iron giant and idk anyone clambering for a sequel of that movie.... or Tomorrowland... I don’t know what the argument is here or why he even wanted to say this and yes ratatioue was a fine movie but honestly I don’t think anyone really wants sequels by him for the movies he has done...

@Nerdpoint - That's a bad take. The Incredibles, Iron Giant, Ratatouille, and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol were all critically acclaimed. Tomorrowland is really his only miss.

I see it a little differently. People aren't clamoring for sequels because he tells complete stories from start to finish. I don't need a sequel to Iron Giant. It's still one of the best movies ever made.

As an artist, I totally get what he is saying. He told the stories he wanted to tell, and now he wants to tell different and new stories.

But I hope he does understand that when people truly enjoy a story or characters or the rich universe artists create, that people want to see more adventures of the characters they love in the created world they are in.

I'm just saying, maybe it's part "people don't want anything new" and part "people want more of what they fell in love with".

I get him wanting to bring forth new stories in a day where things are being re-made, rebooted, made into a sequel or prequel.

I can't focus anyway..Anthony Bourdain is gone and this world keeps getting way less cool. So sad...

I mean, I understand his point and wanting to move forward with other ideas, but how do you go from "Oh, people loved this thing I did so much that they want to see where the story goes next" to "People only loved my old work and don't want anything new from me?"

Just because I love a character or story, and would like to see where they go next, doesn't mean I'm completely shut off from wanting to see something new. I can, and very frequently do, want both.

I understand it takes a long time to make these things, so it's harder from him to dedicate himself to two different ideas like that, but it's weird he thinks people don't want anything new just because they like to see a continuing story.

Can his next project please be this....

I know it is not exactly original but if he does it (right) it would be so much better than the past iterations that it would practically be original.

In terms of Pixar sequels, I think a bugs life sequel could work. Maybe you can even introduce other types of bugs like bees

Can't lie, I would like to see what happens next with Ratatouille.

I'd absolutely love to see Kamandi The Last Boy On Earth done by Pixar!
