INCREDIBLES 2 Review: "It's Simply A Blast From Beginning To End"

Superhero films seem like the norm these days, mainly because they are. However, something about Incredibles 2 stands out from the rest. However, does it live up to the hype after such a long wait?

Brad Bird made one heck of a movie with the first Incredibles back in 2004. It's arguably one of the best, if not the best, Pixar movies ever created. So fast forward 14 years later, the family is back. And thankfully, better than ever.

First things first, you could tell from the promotional material that these characters didn't age a day. That's because this sequel takes place seconds right after the first one. In other words, it's just one continuous story between two great films.

The main conflict in this movie is that the superheros are technically still illegal through the public's perception. So when the Incredibles take on the Underminer, that's when the issues ensue.

However, a tech tycoon named Winston Deavor offers the chance to bring "supers" back to their legal days. In order for this happen though, he needs Elasti-Girl to be his franchise face. Which means Mr. Incredible has to be the stay-at-home dad for his power packed children.

Overall, the story is basically a reverse from the original. It's not entirely creative, but it works. The Parr family is still as entertaining as ever, in fact, maybe more so this time. Violet gets more of a chance to shine, Elasti-Girl is the biggest action star in this film, and Frozone is cooler than ever. Last but not least, Jack-Jack chews up every scene he's in. Without a doubt, he's the family weapon, and it's hilarious.

Incredibles 2 in general is just downright funny. Easily funnier than the first one, as the jokes just keep on coming. The animation is absolutely stunning as well. Considering it's 2018, you can tell the Pixar animators had much more to work with this time around, and it shows.

Now let's get to the villain. The Screenslaver, who hypnotizes people for their own benefit, was a pretty decent antagonist. Not quite as good as Syndrome in the first Incredibles, but good enough. Screenslaver had a solid motivation with some intimidating henchman, so the Parr family had their hands full for sure.

In conclusion, Incredibles 2 was just as good as the original. Maybe not as deep and gritty as it once was, but definitely funnier and more enjoyable. Incredibles 2 is a film for everyone at every age, so the kids and adults should love it the same. With the financial success this film is currently getting, I can't imagine a world where Incredibles 3 is out of the question. Will it take another 14 years for a third installment? Let's hope not.

Nonetheless, go out and see this super-duper family in theaters now.

I like do the movie but it very clearly felt like a 1.5 and not a true sequel. My biggest issue is that there should have been a time jump instead of starting the movie right after the last. Don’t get me wrong I loved it but something was just missing and I think it was that there just wasn’t enough “new” in this movie. Things don’t really progress enough to warrant it being a full sequel after all this time

@ExpertlyMediocr - I mean I’m not saying I didn’t love what they did especially Bob having to learn to take the ray at home dad role that was a cool dynamic and done well but i dont know it just seemed like there wasn’t enough progression in the characters. Maybe if this was 2 or 3 years after the last one then I’d feel different but 14 years later and we really didn’t get any major character progression it just felt a little underwhelming and I think the root cause is the lack of a time jump

@ExpertlyMediocr - You will 100% enjoy it I assure you that. Some of the action scenes are genuinely amazing in their creative use of powers so much so that it makes me depressed that they can’t seem to figure out Fantastic 4 lol if I had to rate it I’d say it’s a 9 where the original was a 10 so it’s still a really great movie

@ExpertlyMediocr - oh yeah if she’s sensitive to that DO NOT take her. I’m amazed there was no seizure warning before the movie bc it’s very bright and very often

@ExpertlyMediocr - Absolutely. I couldn't believe they allowed that scene. I am not sensitive but I still had to look away.

Loved the movie, but disappointed that the Underminer was in it for less than 5 minutes and he escaped without ever appearing in the film again. He could have been captured or killed and it still would have worked for the purpose of the Incredibles being blamed for the collateral damage. It seems like such an odd choice to me to have him just get away especially since he had an entire video game dedicated to him (which this movie overwrote).

I'd really like to know why Brad Bird chose to write him out. I'm guessing he must not have liked the character or thought there was enough potential to make him the main villain, but in Rise of the Underminer he has an entire robot army and underground society that they could have explored further.

@IronMandarin - Bomb Voyage got the same treatment from the first one, I dont see it as a big deal lol

@bobevanz - I figured someone would say this, but the difference is that Bomb Voyage didn't have 14 years worth of hype or a video game based around him haha.

@TheOtherOn - I thought it was pretty good but it wasnt as inspired as the first one, with the fanboy turned crazed nemesis angle and bobs arc from personal ennui to being a fulfilled hero again. Some of the setpieces were outstanding and i hope marvel pays attention for their xmen movies - i always felt the xmen were sorely underperforming and the incredibles proves why.
