Okay, renaissance might be an overstatement. However, over the years DC has made some very good animated features while Marvel, for the most part, has left fans wanting a bit more from the studio. With a Spiderman animated film coming to theatres soon and an adult themed Deadpool series in the works from the brilliant Donald Glover I began to wonder what other characters might be better suited for animation.
Moon Knight
Moon Knight is an amazing character. Dark, gritty and crazy as hell. Yes, he is noticeably similar to Batman and many believe that is why Marvel has yet to do much with the character, nevertheless Marc Spector has been left on the shelf far too long. With his split personalities, supernatural elements (and not to mention his sometimes comical weapons and vehicles) an animated 8-10 episode series on Netflix or FX would be a good fit.
A live action film would be great also, but given the complexities of the story and character, it would be hard for any director to fit it into one film. And a trilogy/franchise is hardly a guarantee for any character.
Howard the Duck
Imagine Archer....but with a duck! With his foul mouth, bad taste and worst manners any comedy writer would have a field day with this show! Set in Los Angeles, in a crummy detective agency Howard is stuck on Earth just trying to get by. This show would allow some great cameos (in one series She-Hulk had a law office in the same building) and would fit right in at FX or Comedy Central.
Rocket & Groot
This one is kind of similar to Howard the Duck and originally was going to keep it off the list but really like it. Marvel, as well at Vin Diesel himself, have hinted at a solo Rocket and Groot movie and seeing as both characters are already animated why not make a great CGI movie based off the last Rocket comic run? Rocket is stranded on Earth, looking for a way to smuggle himself off planet, when Kraven the Hunter begins to hunt him mercilessly. It would be easy to simply add Baby Groot to the mix and have it be a single shot stand alone film between Vol 2 and 3. Disney struck gold with Baby Groot so why not milk a little extra out of him before he's back to full size?
Beta Ray Bill
Beta Ray Bill is one of my all time favorite characters. I have been hoping he would show up in the MCU for years and perhaps we might finally see him in Ragnarok. If we don't, then a CGI animated film would be the next best thing. Marvel could convince Samuel L Jackson and Chris Hemsworth to voice their counterparts and adapt Walter Simonson's classic run (specifically Thor #337-340).
Nick Fury sends Thor to investigate an alien warcraft heading towards Earth and on it is BRB. The first half could be an awesome sci-fi horror where the two are trying to outwit and defeat the other. Obviously by the end they are allies and continue to fight alongside each other.
