THE BOYS Showrunner On Episode 6's Big Twist: "I Don't Think He's Like Venom" - SPOILERS

Though quite a few fans did figure out the twist beforehand, this week's episode of The Boys concluded with a big reveal relating to Jeffrey Dean Morgan's character, Joe Kessler.

Spoilers follow.

At the end of "Dirty Business," we learn that Billy Butcher did not save his old mate's life when they both served at the Panjshir Valley in Afghanistan, and the late Kessler has been a figment of his imagination all along.

There's been some speculation that Kessler actually exists as a manifestation of Butcher's V-induced tumor, who takes over when the host unleashes his powers, not unlike Marvel's Venom. Showrunner Eric Kripke addressed this theory during an interview with EW.

"I don't think he's like Venom. I don't think he's a dude with his own point of view and wants to go eat chickens or whatever, but I think he represents all that's dark and malignant inside of Butcher."

"Both Butcher and Homelander [played by Antony Starr], in very different ways, are wrestling with whether they're human or whether they're monsters," Kripke continues. "Kessler represents the monster side and Becca represents the human side of Butcher. Those two sides are at war with themselves, but they're all Butcher."

Will the dark side win out? Butcher has done some pretty awful stuff when required over the course of four seasons, but as MM points out, he is usually a "motherf*cker with a heart." With only two episodes to go, we'll just have to wait and see if he can keep Kessler in check.

"The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power," reads the official season 4 synopsis. "Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late."

Returning cast members include Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Cameron Crovetti, along with new recruits Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

The first three episodes of The Boys season 4 will be available to stream from June 13th, with new instalments dropping weekly through to the season finale on July 18.

@Nomis929 - best part in an otherwise mid episode (by this show's standard). Still enjoyed it though. I'm finally starting to like Hughie a bit more.

@UniqNo - I actually thought it was pretty good. The "twist" with Butcher and Kessler was somewhat predictable but I like how it went down in the show.

@Nomis929 - There hasn't been twist like that since the Acolyte. I'm being serious. Neither were much of a mystery, but one was obvious if you were any kind of fan. That said I enjoy both for different reasons.

The way Kripke wrote in the reveal that Kessler was a figment of Butcher's imagination felt poorly executed in my opinion, I didn't feel the impact of the scene bc the wormy black mass crawling around in Butcher's brain didn't move or even show up

@Milklander - It did though! Go watch again. Just before the reveal, Butcher is looking down, and you see the worm crawling from his temple, across his forehead. It wasn’t a closeup like other shots; but, it was the most movement the worm has gotten. I remember thinking “they’re not trying to hide it now.” And then the reveal happens.

The Kessler reveal while predictable (dude was never in a scene with anyone but Butcher) was still well executed imo.

I never realized how both Homelander and Butcher are both dealing with their humanity & such this season but it does make sense…

As we saw with Homelander (great banner image lol), he thought he had wiped himself of that weakness in his eyes but Firecracker in order to get closer to him has activated that again in him which could be his downfall while Butcher is still struggling with it via Becca & Joe as the devil & angel on his shoulders.

I am intrigued to know how exactly Kessler killed Ezekiel as he said though?.

We know Butcher basically blacked out and when he regained consciousness , Ezekiel was a bloody mess and we have been seeing this weird thing crawler under Butcher’s skin (maybe it’s a sentient parasitic tumor due to the Compound V?) so I wouldn’t be surprised if we actually see it in the final 2 episodes of the season.

@TheVisionary25 - I don't think that look on Homelander's face was that he realized he wasn't over that fetish, as he keeps bottles of milk with the Compound V. It's the shock and awe to delight that he can have the milk fresh again.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 7/5/2024, 2:55 PM
@JoeInTheBox - probably but I think it he showed he’s not over as he thought he was

The people that raised him ingrained that need for love and such so deeply in him that he can’t escape it.

@TheVisionary25 - Good catch. I'll take it a step further and say that we've seen "2" of them. The one always near his head and the one that was shown in his back, a much larger one that started popping up I think in this episode before the reveal at the end. I thought the original had just grown initially, but now I'm wondering if there's 2 of them, each connected to Butcher's psyche in some way. Butcher's been feeding the wrong one for a while now, hence the size difference. If you notice her presence was a little more pronounced when she's fully introduced and she's become increasingly diminutive, while Kessler has popped up and been more and more vocal. By the reveal she's almost scared, she knows she has lost a lot of influence to Kessler by her reaction when he shouts over her in the reveal.

TheVisionary25 - 7/5/2024, 3:12 PM
@The1st - hmmm , interesting theory , I could see that

I wouldn’t be surprised though if it is just one malignant tumor that has become sentient almost like that episode of Diabolical if you have seen that

Or was it like a MK weird split personality thing that allowed Kessler to take over?.
Apophis71

@TheVisionary25 - They kinda gave the game away with the Rabbit that didn't appear to have any powers from the temp V then we saw something coming out of it's stomach with powers.

IE 100% when he took full V it all went into the tumor and become sentient with powers, just remains to be seen if they go full Venom with it or if just takes over Butchers body in a more Moon Knight kind of way at certain times.

HashTagSwagg

Butcher talking to his evil/good self was just a repeat of what we got with Homelander talking to himself. Both feel like a lazy storytelling device to let us see what they're thinking, neither was necessary, the characters were interesting and readable enough, you didn't need to dumb it down for us.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 7/5/2024, 3:24 PM
@HashTagSwagg - Kessler is Butcher's true ambition and goal and his wife is his guilt and confliction. Homelander's split personalities were just his insecurities talking back to him.

Given we only have 2 episodes yet , how do people feel about this season so far?.

We haven’t really had any or much plot progression but the show has always been more character focused which I enjoy and I am liking their arcs to varying degrees.

So far , I would say it’s on par with S2 (if not a bit better) but not as good as 1 or 3 for me.

@TheVisionary25 - For me this has been the worst season, largely for the lack of plot progression and no apparent arc to the season. To me its nowhere near the user score but certain things don't bother me as much as others.

That said I'm still enjoying it overall.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 7/5/2024, 2:57 PM
@Evansly - that’s fair

I can’t really argue about the lack of plot or overarching arc progression but the characters still engage to varying extents so they keep me still enjoying the show

In terms of the arcs , it’s Butcher’s , Hughie and A-Train that have worked the most for me.

LAME.

Venom like Butcher would have been cool. This whole Angel/Devil on shoulder thing is boring since he's been fighting that since S1.

I'm calling it right now. The boys are gonna somehow poison Firecracker's breast milk to kill Homelander. Mark my words.

@Fares - that’s what I thought given that Starlite jabbed her. Poison the bitty so that it weakens Homelander enough to do real damage.

@Dotanuki - This would make no sense, given if they have a way to homelander htey would have used it 3 seasons ago by just spiking his drink

@Fares - That's an intriguing idea
