ANT-MAN & THE WASP Star Evangeline Lilly Thinks Captain Marvel Should Lead The All-Female AVENGERS

During a new interview to promote the release of Ant-Man & The Wasp in The UK & Ireland, Evangeline Lilly was asked who she'd like to see leading the all-female Avengers team, and chose the other Captain.

Although there hasn't been any official word on that all-female MCU team-up movie we've been hearing about for a while, there have been whispers that it is something the studio is considering, and it's certainly something that Evangeline Lilly wants to be a part of.

During an interview to promote the release of Ant-Man and The Wasp in The UK, the former Lost star was asked if she could see herself leading the group. Though Lilly did admit that she'd "love that", she then put forward Captain Marvel's name:
 
“Well, it seems only natural Captain Marvel would lead because she is a general? And she’s the captain. And Captain America leads the other Avengers, right, so maybe Captain Marvel would lead. I’d think so."

Though we haven't seen Carol Danvers in action on the big screen yet, she is arguably the most obvious pick to lead this team if the movie ever materialises - although Black Widow might have something to say about that!

This would probably be the most gimmicky thing of whatever year it came out. But it’s probably make a lot of money and no critic would dare give it a bad review so it has that going for it. If they were to do it I agree that CM should lead.

@Bakugo - Unless Marvel works out the rights issues with Universal, probably wont be seeing anymore Hulk related characters. Also an all female led movie is pointless, its not like there are all male led movies

@Jaspion - Unless they come up with a good plot reason why the male heroes are involved it make no sense to just have the female heroes

@dracula - If there was an Avengers movie with Captain Marvel, Wasp, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Tigra, and She-Hulk, then it's effectively the same gender breakdown as the first Avengers film, only in reverse.

The fact that this would be considered a gimmick, while Avengers wasn't reflects an attitude that "male is neutral, female is aberrant", which is an ugly cultural impulse going back thousands of years.

No one had to explain why five of the original six Avengers were male, and similarly, you could do an Avengers film with 5/6 female without some justification, too. Some villain threatens Earth, and these six happen to be the ones that respond.

@Spock0Clock - The Avengers are the Avengers and the story was developped over several movies. It didnt need to be explained.

Making a movie where this team forms itself without it being a blatant gimmick wont be easy to do.

And thats what the MCU has done best, the universe developped itself organically. I really hope they dont deviate from that.

I would watch a movie with CM, Wasp, BW, Valkyrie, SW, Shuri and my personal favorite Maria Hill... if the story makes sense.

@Spock0Clock - Well no one had to explain why 5 of the 6 Avengers were male because they were the only heroes known to the universe. They had to explain why Hulk & Thor weren't in Civil War as well as why Hawkeye wasn't around for Infinity War.

They are all enhanced beings so it doesn't really matter, but male's overall are more dominant physically, which would lend to them being the majority of the heroes. What the male to female ratio is in the military is a good indication of that.

@shadowboxxx - If Kevin Feige said today "we're working toward a female-centric team-up movie. Over the next four movies, we'll be laying out the groundwork for it by focusing on female heroes with an eye toward that team-up", 70% of the people on this site would froth at the mouth and say "it's forced".

When people heard about the plan to make an Avengers movie, they didn't qualify it by saying "only if it makes sense". They were excited it was happening at all and hoped for the best.

And the reason "the Avengers are the Avengers" is because they are a product of a medium aimed at pre-adolescent boys and largely era that even well-meaning male writers saw women through a very retrograde lens.

There's a reason why so many people agree that Claremont's X-Men produced the strongest and best female characters in the genre: because he made an effort to directly address way women were seen in the medium. While not perfect, people like Chris Claremont worked like hell to push feminist themes and depth into female characters and now comic fans look at it in retrospect, thinking "wow, great job" while simultaneously resisting that exact same effort today.

As I said in the previous post, the reason those characters were chosen was to reflect as much of an early lineup from the series as possible, which goes back to the 60's.

It's not a coincidence that they happen to be male. They're male because they have a legacy that stretches back to an era where they pretty much had to be. (And that's okay for a first Avengers film, from my perspective.) But we're a few years out from that, with a universe that is full of interesting female characters who have already been established, and yet, we still hear that having them in a movie together is "forced".
