Peyton Reed Promises That ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Isn't A Romantic Comedy

Ant-Man and The Wasp is Marvel Studios' third release of 2018 and comes our way this summer shortly after Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters. While we've seen a trailer for the sequel alongside a handful of stills, much of the movie is being kept under wraps but director Peyton Reed - who also helmed the first instalment after Edgar Wright's departure - has now dropped a few new details.

Asked how The Wasp stacks up to Ant-Man in the movie, he said: "It was important to me, in this movie called Ant-Man and The Wasp, that she's not a supporting character. She's a lead character. She's become a fully-formed hero." That's definitely going to come as music to the ears of fans and Reed went on to explain why the hero is so important. "She really was, along with Sue Storm of the Fantastic Four, one of the first female Marvel heroes. I feel a certain responsibility with The Wasp."

Pushed for intel on what we should expect in terms of the story, Reed pointed out what makes the sequel different to other stories set in the MCU. "This one explores the different generations of Ant-Man and The Wasp. I thought that was an interesting thing we haven't seen in a Marvel movie."

The first Ant-Man was very much a comedy and that's led to a lot of speculation that these two heroes teaming up is going to result in Marvel's first romcom. Not so fast, says Reed. "It's not a romantic comedy. The idea might enter Hope's brain: does she need Scott Lang in her life?" It definitely sounds like the follow-up will take the characters to some interesting places in that case. What do you think?

Rom-coms are "flavour of the month" anyway

@SupermansTrunks - If he says it won't be a romantic comedy, will that make it a comedy? We know that will happen. Maybe the emphasis won't be on romance. I'll absorb the comedic deluge in order to ensure less romance.

@Stealthduck - Well it is Ant-Man and The Wasp one of the most well known superhero couples they shouldn't undercut the romance but they also shouldnt overstate it

@SupermansTrunks - If they play it close to the comic book version, I will be very happy. They were definitely a couple, there interactions were only recognisable as a result of romantic entanglement, yet the outright romantic stuff was minimal.

Whatever

I don't even care at this point. The first movie was a 'heist' movie but that played only a moderate role in the flow of the story. I'm totally down with a rom-com element because that fits perfectly into Rudd's wheelhouse and helps add to the Hope/Lang dynamic, which is obviously going to be juxtaposed with the Pym/Janet dynamic.

I'm really just excited for the legacy element and how they play off of the new status quo. Marvel have done an excellent job of weaving tones and genres in and out of their movies without letting one hurt the other (for the most part) so whatever ends up being natural to the characters is something I'm down with.
