ANT-MAN 3 Gets A Writer In RICK AND MORTY And Marvel Comics Scribe Jeff Loveness

Marvel Studios may have just postponed its entire Phase 4 slate, but there is some good news for the Marvel Cinematic Universe today. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ant-Man 3 just found a writer in the form of Jeff Loveness, one of the writers and co-producers on Rick and Morty. 

Peyton Reed is returning to direct the Marvel Studios threequel, which will feature Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man and Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne/The Wasp.

The trade notes that this deal was wrapped up at the start of Hollywood's shutdown, so Loveness is already hard at work penning the screenplay. There's no word on when shooting is expected to commence or a release date for the Ant-Man and The Wasp follow-up, but common sense says we probably won't see this one until late 2022/early 2023 at the earliest. 

Loveness got his start writing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and also contributed to the Oscars, Emmys, and White House Correspondents’ Dinner. 

He also has some Marvel Comics experience after penning titles featuring characters like Spider-Man, Groot, and Nova. There's no word on what Marvel Studios has planned for Ant-Man 3, but the prevailing theory is that we'll see Cassie Lang suit up and possibly even lay the groundwork for the Young Avengers.

But does it get a release date? I really wanna see this, so hopefully it gets the first possible date of november 2022 (even though it doesnt really fit that month in my opinion)

@MalseMarcel - Maybe with these corona-time Disney-MARVEL will have more time to prepare and produce all the projects that had anounced.

In my opinion, 14 projects are too many and I think they are saturated.
This already happened with INHUMANS that was announced but they had no resorurces to make it and left the task to ABC.

I understand that DISNEY after buying MARVEL STUDIOS and FOX want to quickly amortize the investment but if their movies lose quality, the public will stop following them.

Not all movies get $2 billion like AVENGERS

@lvcl - Why is that if any old movie studio makes 14 movies in a year everyone would be that’s kind of a light year but if Marvel Studios does it over a couple years it’s all how can they juggle that many projects? As if they can’t hire staff in accordance like anyone.

People dont know whats good for them, more freaquent marvel movies produced in a short amount of time will have two lasting effects. There will be a significant drop in the quality of the writing and general audiences will be sick and tired of these films. Its like gold, when more and more of it becomes available, it loses its value. Syndrome said it best:

@JustALurker - They release 2-3 movies featuring wildly different characters, made by different creative minds over a 12 month window. They’ll be fine. Hell, it’ll be over a year between the last 2 marvel movies.

Haven´t you seen INHUMANS?
Yes, they can hire staff with money but not the appropiate one.

Another example is James Gunn that DISNEY had to rehire him for GotG 3 in order to not piss of fans (and actors) and make sure it´s going to succeed.

Not everyone is valid.

MARVEL has a special formula that only the ones who worked previosly with them can copy.

SONY did it with Spider-Man. They had the rights of the character they had a staff and money but only after working with MARVEL and copy the formula can produce their own quality movies.

@lvcl - Inhumans wasn’t made by Marvel Studios and had nothing to do with trying to do too much as once and neither did the James Gunn situation.

I hope Ant Man 3 takes a "reverse Ragnarok" route. Meaning, like the first Thor movies were mostly dark and serious, while the third one was fun and light.

Ant Man 1 and 2 were fun and light, but this time make it darker and grittier. Not too much where it's unrecognizable, but just enough where it makes a difference.

That's pretty exciting news; considering how trippy and bonkers Rick and Morty gets by using sci-fi concepts in inventive ways for comedic effect, having one of the show's writers work on a character like Ant-Man seems like a perfect fit.

I know sometimes Marvel gets a bit of a bad rap for leaning heavily into the comedy aspect of their movies, but Ant-Man is one of the characters who's best suited to that treatment. My only real gripe with the Ant-Man movies (particularly the second one) is that they come across as a bit underwhelming at times.

I hope they go all out for this third installment and we end up with something nuts and fun and funny and surprising and trippy and quirky and action-packed; look at what Ragnarok did for the Thor franchise, and turn that up to 11.

He's only written one released episode so far, the dragon sex episode, which wasn't... terribly good. He said on twitter that he has three more episodes this upcoming half-season so hopefully those fare better. I haven't read his comic book work, maybe that's great.

@tmp3 - Damn that was the episode I disliked the most in the series. I also hated vindicators and the episode where Jerry has to donate his [thingy] to aliens.

@tmp3 - It's hard for me to gauge whether the dragon episode was good or not. I think it may have been a decent execution of a sub-par premise. Sometimes you start with an idea you think has potential, but you write it out and there's just not much there to explore. That's how the episode felt to me.

Even good writers get caught in that snarl. (Not that I know if he's a good writer or not, but fingers crossed.)

@Spock0Clock - If I'm being honest, I thought it was a terrible episode, like the kind of thing people who make fun of Rick & Morty think the show is, and made me feel as if it was really losing its steam in the same way that the Harmon-less Community season 4 made me feel. He has three more episodes for the back-half of the season starting in May, so we'll see if this was just a trip-up.

I' ve read some of his comics and...he's not bad, i wonder how he got this gig tho lol.

They could get better writers from Marvel but ehhh it's Ant-man we're talking about, so someone like Loveness will do the job.

@Doomsday8888 - There's quite a few Rick & Morty writers already running around at Marvel on projects like She-Hulk and Loki, so maybe their writers room is just the incubator for new Marvel writers now
