ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Director Gets Surprising Candid About Why He Recast Cassie Lang

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania director Peyton Reed has opened up about the decision to recast Cassie Lang in the divisive Phase 5 threequel, sharing a surprisingly candid reason for the character change.

Avengers: Endgame's five-year time-jump saw Scott Lang reunite with his daughter, Cassie, albeit as a teenager rather than a child. Emma Fuhrmann replaced Abby Ryder Fortson as the character but was unceremoniously ditched by filmmaker Peyton Reed for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania

Fuhrmann's role was small enough so that it didn't serve as a distraction, while her replacement, Kathryn Newton, is undeniably more experienced after starring in the likes of Supernatural, Detective Pikachu, and Freaky

Despite that, Newton didn't receive overly positive reviews for her performance as Cassie, a character who was somewhat underwritten in the threequel.

Talking during the Director's Commentary for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania (via CBR), Reed talked candidly about the decision to replace Fuhrmann. "We've just introduced our now 18-year-old Cassie Lang. Kathryn Newton, of course, an actor who I have admired for a long time."

"And when we were talking about Cassie in this movie, she's aged five years since the events of Ant-Man and The Wasp," he continued. "And I wanted someone in that role who could really hang with Paul Rudd and sort of not be left in the dust."

It seems a little harsh to suggest that Fuhrmann couldn't "hang" with the actor, but it seems he might not have had the input he wanted when the Russo Brothers chose a new actress to play Cassie in the MCU.

Reed later added, "She's gotta be sharp, and quick, and funny. And also, [Newton] is an athlete. She's a world-class golfer. She has the physicality for the role."

Cassie suited up in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and controlled her newfound abilities with ease. It's unclear what the future holds in store for the character moving forward, but with no plans for the Young Avengers to assemble, she's likely to remain a supporting character for now.

Any golfers here feel they're athletes?

@Vigor - yes I would say many golfers would consider themselves athletes. Especially pro golfers.

@philinterrupted - You don't have to be athletic to play Golf, yes you can still be professional and overweight.

That's why they have Golf carts.

@marvel72 - didn’t say you had to be athletic. There are also different types of athletic. I’ve seen fat people who are very athletic.

@VictorAlonzo - You must've never played golf. Yes of course golfers are athletes. It requires an insane amount of coordination, focus, and power. Anyone that thinks otherwise has never played before.

I'm sorry. What does golfing have to do with anything?
mastakilla39
mastakilla39 - 4/19/2023, 8:59 AM
@CoHost - It doesn't. Its a privilege thing, Russo Bros' casted someone he didn't want and he used his privilege to recast. James Gunn was going to do the same thing with Hemworth's Thor too if Gotg Vol 3 came out before Thor 4 because he never planned for Thor and the guardians to be together. Not all directors get along nor are they always on the same page, but since they are allowed to do whatever they want with the solo films they can just recast.

The Endgame Cassie to me looked and acted more "mature" for her short screen time, but I guess Peyton Reed wanted some adult baby acting and looking Cassie and thats what we got for Antman 3.

Honestly after rewatch. I found movie to be just okay. Too many unwanted story beats which was not developed well. Bad script, bad acting by Kathryn Newton, MODOK was written so bad that if there is real MODOK he will kill the writer and director. They should have made MODOK more of threat and shouldn't have killed him off. Graphics was horrible in the fight sequence between Resistance and Kang Army during middle of movie, it had Asylum produced movie quality cgi. Final act was too busy, could not concentrate on character. But liked Ant Man and Kang interaction and the fight.

Really love how Jonathan Majors carried the character... but badly written and felt his arc rushed. I hope he comes out of the current situation and continue with the role. I'm not supporting his personal side... but love his talent... hope it does not go down in drain like Kevin Spacey

I liked her. But yea, film is underwritten. They introduce a couple of conflicts and walls between Scott and Cassie but do nothing with it. Once they are in the QR, they are fine and work together like nothing happened. They could have written them with far more depth and stakes. Their relationship still works as the heart of the film and motivation for Scott, but it could have been more interesting.

Also, the trailers indicating Kang was gonna have a bigger role and offer Scott a chance to relive time with Cassie was an interesting pitch that was never part of the film in the first place.

@WakandanQueen - Kang was never talking to Scott, those lines were from his scenes with Janet fixing the chair. It was a misdirect in the trailer
WakandanQueen
WakandanQueen - 4/19/2023, 12:46 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - I'm aware. Maybe I didn't make myself clear; I mean that this misdirection by the marketing created a more interesting plotpoint than what actually went down in the film. Sure, Janet was very cool in the movie and all, but it would have been far stronger drama if Scott was manipulated by Kang. And it would have made for a better plot for an Ant-Man vs Kang movie.

@WakandanQueen - gotcha gotcha. Yeah would’ve been a better motive than I’ll kill your daughter , misleading Scott to think he’d have a chance to correct all his mistakes if he helped kang

And yet Emma's 5 minutes with Rudd at the front door in Endgame was far superior over anything of Newton's with Rudd in Quantumania.

Made the wrong choice switching from Emma to Newton just becuase Newton has more name value.

@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - It's one of the best scenes in the entire movie! That actor was fantastic and I cared more about her in that small scene then this version in the entire movie

@Boycee - Is it though? Don't just make a statement like this without backing the reasoning of your claim.

Emma's 5 mins of screen time with Rudd showed she was far better for 'hanging' with Rudd than the entire time Newton was with him.

Emma came off as a better Cassie in 5 minutes screen time than Newton did for an entire movie.

@WarMonkey - Eaxctly my sentiments. I cared more about Emma's Cassie for the 5 minutes she got than I did for any of Newton's screen time in Quantumania.
Boycee
Boycee - 4/19/2023, 9:08 AM
@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - It doesn't need any essay-long reasoning to back it up because the simple common sense speaks for itself. The girl in Endgame was objectively a complete nothing role. When I first saw it I thought it was one of the director's daughters who got gifted the role because there was nothing to the scene and she was likely never going to be seen again. Then once they announced the character would be back as the co-lead of an entire Ant-Man movie I said obviously they're going to re-cast her with a far more skilled and experienced actor, and guess what happened....

@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - And not that much more name value. I had no idea who she was lol
TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan
TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - 4/19/2023, 9:20 AM
@Boycee - Far more skilled that she seemed to phone it in & majortiy agree. Just because newton has experience doesn't make her right for the part. Also, saying an unknown can't carry a film, all actors pretty much started unknown until something they have done makes them known or gets them notice. Newton didn't bring anything to the table with her skill or experience here. This could have been (or maybe not) a break out role for Emma. Her 5 minutes of acting > The supposed experince of Newton.

TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - 4/19/2023, 9:23 AM
@MrDandy - I had seen some of her other work prior & I kind of got why they made the switch name value wise, but to me, she didn't bring anything to Quantumania with her experience they were bringing her in for. May as well have just stuck with Emma & see how she turned out. Couldn't have been any worse or uninspiring as Newton's performance here.

@TMW1987ProudProWrestlingFan - I think the actress currently has more screen presence, to me, but it's not like they really gave her much to do as a character/actress.

That's BULL. Reed is a prick for recasting Cassie, I'm sorry. Like there was NOTHING wrong with Emma Fuhrmann. She did a great job in that little scene with Rudd in Endgame.

And to not even be told upfront you've been recast, but instead gotta find out like everybody else? Oh nah, that's dirty. So Marvel themselves didn't recast her, but they definitely should've stepped in and said "No. Emma is fine."

Man, now I'm glad Ant Man 3 failed.
