Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania is COVID Filmmaking at its Worst

In this new video essay of the latest from the MCU, I'll be tackling how pandemic restrictions may have caused creative choices that led to some of the movie's weaker elements.

In this third film in Payten Reed’s trilogy, Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) is back with a journey to the Quantum Realm and a throwdown with the big new bad of the MCU, Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). But the shadow of the COVID pandemic looms over the production of this film as theaters shut down and production is stalled by preventative guidelines.

In this look-back at the film, I’m going to cover some of the biggest issues plaguing the film as it possibly succumbs to some of the worst stylistic choices brought on by a need to keep actors, staff, and production isolated in small sound stages and meet restrictive guidelines.

Superhero partners Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and the Wasp. Together, with Hope’s parents Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Scott’s daughter Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures and embarking on an adventure that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought possible. Directed by Peyton Reed and produced by Kevin Feige, p.g.a. and Stephen Broussard, p.g.a., “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” also stars Jonathan Majors as Kang. The sci-fi adventure opens in theaters on Feb. 17, 2023.

Rated PG-13

Cast: Michael Douglas, Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathryn Newton, Jonathan Majors

In theaters now.

Agreed. Everything these days looks like it was filmed in the volume.

@ObserverIO - For me the Mandalorian shows that with the right pre-planning you can do some great stuff in the volume, but for Marvel (who is notorious for not having pre-visualization done by the time they are filming) the technology of the volume makes for a poor creative match.

yet ANOTHER example of why critics are about as valuable as a hinge on a chainsaw.

they start watching WAY too many movies to still be able to enjoy them as entertainment.
it's their "vocation".
which is another way of saying they have no OTHER saleable talents, and don't want to work at Burger Thing.

also, as soon as they think they are a valid barometer of cinema quality, they start pontificating.

this guy is comparable to the best/worst of them (hint, hint, joshie-poo).

i figure about an 80% chance that he'll have THIS particular opinion of him removed.

Good article. Part of the reason I hated this film was the fact that it looked like a stage play at times🤕

@AmazingFILMporg - for me, once I started noticing it (about 10 minutes into the quantum realm) it was all I could see. Bad blocking, minimalist sets and a panorama cgi surrounding for every scene. Definitely felt lazy. Thanks for watching!
