ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Writer Finally Reveals Why Janet Van Dyne's Quantum Superpowers Vanished

Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness has revealed that an earlier cut of the movie better explored Janet Van Dyne's Quantum powers and explains why Marvel Studios later changed course.

In the closing moments of Ant-Man and The Wasp, Janet Van Dyne returned to Earth and used her newfound Quantum superpowers to help heal Ghost.

In a mid-credits scene, however, Scott Lang was sent into the Quantum Realm to retrieve more of the energy needed to stop Ava Starr from vanishing. This seemed to indicate Janet's powers might be finite, but the hope among fans was that Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania might finally reveal how much the original Wasp's time there changed her physiology.

Instead, those Quantum abilities were forgotten, and writer Jeff Loveness has now confirmed they shot scenes with Janet using them which wound up on the cutting room floor.

"Janet’s got obviously those healing properties, but I looked it as more of like, less healing, and more of like, 'Oh, she’s got a bit of that inter-dimensionality phasing as well, and she was able to almost like stabilize Ava.' We wrote that," he explains. "It was in there, and I think it just it was just confusing the viewers in our test screenings like, 'Wait, she has phasing powers?'"

According to Loveness, the plan was to reveal that The Wasp gained her Ghost-like powers after inadvertently stealing them from Kang the Conqueror.

It actually sounds like this was going to be a major subplot in the threequel, as the writer went on to recall a scene with Janet using her powers that was later edited to remove both them and the fallout from her actions.

"There's a part where like they just landed the jungle and Janet pushes him against the tree and says like do not move, and the light goes over them, I think it’s clever editing, but in the script, that was like, she phases them out of sequence, and so the scanner misses them, because she phases them both out, and it really hurts Hope and Hank. And Janet’s in a lot of pain."

"And that was like, 'Oh wait, you can still do that? What is going on down here?' That was almost tied into her traumas like she can’t really control these powers well, being in the Quantum Realm makes her more unstable, and it was a part of that Kang core of like, she made that sacrifice of almost like touching a hot stove, and running away with it, and it really messed her up."

It's a real shame to think such a big character development ended up on the cutting room floor, though we're not sure the movie really had room for it, anyway.

Still, it's odd that what sounds like such an important part of Janet's story was scrapped and we'd hope Marvel Studios will consider revisiting the concept in a future story. Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, perhaps?

How very Fox them. Test audiences didn’t watch the last movie, so they removed an entire power set and subplot because [frick] it. They had no business sticking their biggest villain in a movie they care so little about.

Everybody loves to rib on antman 3 for reasons. But I enjoyed it
However this. This right here is sloppy and as @plusultra said, very fox like. This is precisely why I ignored fox marvel movies, and why I prefer MCU. I'm here for consistency. Not sloppy writing where they waive off major character attributes.

They have to get it together

@Vigor - Or like when they suddenly gave Kitty Pryde the ability to Phase people's minds into their past bodies? Just, completely out of no where, she can just do this with no explanation of how or why.

And, keep in mind, this was in the movie that is largely considered the best X-Men movie.

@Vigor - Yeah. I can understand Janet's quantum powers through a writing perspective, to give her a special place in the group (as "healer" or "mage"). But they should totally keep the consistency there - and explain it very well. Should've been done on the last film btw.

@Fogs - completely agree

@CorndogBurglar - Dunno, the foxverse didn't require you to buy prequel comics, tie-in novels, or subscribe to D+ for things to make sense. Kitty pryde getting new powers felt more natural because its set in the future and she's alot older now. You get new powers as you grow older or level up with your mutation.

MCU has always been good because of consistency. Now it just seems like they are going back and forth to make things into a joke, unnecessarily explaining things no 1 cares about, or just letting things happen due to lazy plot conveniences.

It this keeps happening its just gonna end up like the Snyderverse where they are just going to force audiences to accept things or like Star Wars where no 1 cares about it anymore because each sequel keeps making the past films seem worst.

Neither does the MCU. Everything3 from D+ has been pretty much atandalone so far, and all comics were absolutely irrelevant for the movie.

That's a lot of words for a lot of nothing.
They need another writer on for Avengers.

If you wanted to explain it, you could've just reshot a line, where she's asked about it and she says it wore off after her time in the normal world or something.

@dagenspear - that's more or less what I assumed

I kinda just figured she transferred whatever energy gave her those powers over to Ava to stabilize her

Clearly loveness put a lot of thought and attention into everting; then marvel just ignore it and mashed together a below average film.

@marvel72 - Pretty much. Tell me about how a beloved character like Cyclops can teleport dragons and I will quickly tune out. That's not the character I know. Keep it in the lanes. Make Janet's story. Stop treating legendary heroes like they aren't good enough, just to make them worse...

I am still and always will be salty on how Feige and Co. screwed over Hank and Janet. They are literally my favorite Marvel couple (Scott and Jean are a close second) since childhood (I watched a lot of EMH) and I hate what the MCU did to them.

They should have been founding members of the Avengers, Hank should have been the one to create Ultron (because literally the whole idea behind Ultron was Hank inserting his hidden rage and envy against the other Avengers into a machine that pretty much becomes Hank's worser half), Janet should have been the one to name the Avengers, ect. ect.

If that small (no pun intended) change was made, IMO, the MCU would have had a whole gold mine of stories to tap into featuring these two. They are Marvel's legacy characters, a duo that's as synonymous with the Avengers name as Iron Man or the Hulk is. F**k, why did they have to ruin them?!

Thank you for listening to my TED talk.

@FilmGuy7878 - Hank and Janet should have been introduced in Phase 1 instead of Black Widow and Hawkeye. Those two could have come in later on.

@mountainman - EXACTLY! Natasha and Clint were later additions to the team to begin with.

TBH I didnt think much of it. Janet never had actual "powers" so it makes sense it was just residual quantum energy. I wouldn't even call it healing properties. And did she ever truly heal Ghost? I was under the impression she stabilized her. I bet Ghost still has her phasing powers in Thunderbolts.
