ANT-MAN & THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA Star Evangeline Lilly Rejected X-MEN And WONDER WOMAN Movie Offers

Evangeline Lilly, who reprises the role of Hope van Dyne in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, has revealed that she turned down the chance to play an X-Men character and Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman.

Evangeline Lilly returns as Hope van Dyne, aka the Wasp, in Marvel Studios' Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but the Lost alum has now touched on some intriguing brushes with (potential) comic book movie roles before she signed on to play the pint-sized hero.

While being interviewed for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Lilly revealed that Hugh Jackman approached her about joining the X-Men franchise when they worked together on robot boxing movie Real Steel.

"[He] was like, ‘Hey, so, the X-Men guys are asking me if I would approach you because they know that you won’t talk to anybody," she explained. "They knew I was working with you and were interested to know if it would ever interest you to do an X-Men thing."

Lilly was not interested, and says she felt "like such a dick" for declining the offer to Wolverine himself. She didn't feel quite a bad about turning down Joss Whedon's invitation to play Wonder Woman, however.

Noting that there may have been "slight offence taken," Lilly added: “I was okay with that. I was okay with burning bridges. I was okay with not having everyone in Hollywood wanna work with me…I just always had to do what felt right for me,. And honestly I wasn’t into superhero movies and that’s the main reason why, in both of these instances, I just kind of felt like I don’t know what I get out of this.”

Lilly's attitude to superhero films obviously changed over the years, but was the Wasp the right role to pick? The character made an impact in the first Ant-Man movie, but the feeling is that she's been somewhat sidelined since, and it must be said that Quantumania really struggles to utilize Hope in a memorable way outside of maybe one climactic sequence.

Which X-Men character do you think the studio had in mind for Lilly? Do you feel she'd have been a good choice to play Wonder Woman? Drop us a comment down below.

A nothing character at this point. You could’ve cut her from the film and it wouldn’t have skipped a beat.

@GhostDog - One of those actors that's in a bunch of huge franchises as exclusively nothing characters

I wonder what the X-Men roles they discussed. Seeing how Real Steel is from 2011, I doubt it were a-listers like Jean Grey.

Anyway, she was at her best in The Hobbit and Ant-Man and the Wasp in my opinion.

@bkmeijer1 - Must have been for DoFP. First Class came out around the same time Real Steel came out.

Maybe a future mutant like Blink or a cut role.
Don’t quite have a ‚perfect‘ character for her though, she may have made a good Psylocke

@Blergh - She could do Kitty Pride, although she is now older than I’d like to see the role. I could also see her as Polaris, Moira McTaggert (not sure if she could pull off the accent though), or Dazzler.

Lily as Wonder Woman could have worked really well. Her way of portraying Kate in early seasons of Lost would have worked really well.
And despite what the public consensus about Whedon is today he did great with female superheroes in Buffy

To me....yup!

It was bad dude. Kang was great, Paul rudd is always good but some bad dialogue from him though, some ok fight scenes and some ok humor. Modok was funny to me though🤡

4 out of 10 for me

@AmazingFILMporg - Man disappointing.
Guess Marvel movies becoming bad was a long time coming but still a sad time nevertheless.

IMO that „rush a lot of content out quick“ mantra didn’t pan out the way they thought

Yeah but it's an easy fix. Just slow down, let the CGI artist breathe, tone down the comedy and focus on the personal stories within the crazy epic scale. Feige already said they're scaling back and thank God😳

The mid credit scene sums up the problem with the MCU right now . It was embarrassingly bad because it feels like an SNL sketch. Felt cheap as hell!

@AmazingFILMporg - what did you think of Cassie? My buddy, who is a parent, said if “she ever talked to me like that and I was her father She would be grounded forever!”

Cassie is a kid that wants to do good. It's cringe but we were all cringe when we were young because they are idealistic and it comes off endearing but cringe. Her motivation is sweet but cringe as expected for a kid her age.

Never understood the point of her character, she was the most boring part of the first Ant-Man and got so much worse as the films went on. I know she was created before Nadia Van Dyne but she would have been so much more interesting of a character to put in the movies.

I will say this to my dying day, the trilogy should have focused on Hank and Janet.

I actually think Lilly is a pretty good actress, and enjoyed Hope in the first Ant-Man... but holy shit, I can't think of a more bland MCU character now. She brings nothing whatsover to Quantumania. It should have been called Ant-Man and the Wasp's Momma: Quantumania.

@RorMachine - I haven't seen the movie, but would u say that's a script / direction issue or does she really seems uninvested on screen?

@Unites - Script all the way... she does seem uninvested, but so do most of them. Majors and Pfeifer only deliver the goods. Even Rudd struggles because he's given such a by-the-numbers arc. Scott loves his daughter and doesn't want anything to happen to her... the end.

@Clungermania - Ehhhh... still haven't had a chance to. I knew Rohan was doing his for the embargo so it took pressure off, but now it's hard to motivate myself to write about it. I might just do a feature instead.

@RorMachine - ''and the Wasp's Momma''

So, the Wasp?

I do admit, I did expect 'Wasp' in the title to refer to Hope, not Janet.

She was just there in Ant-Man 3, just shooting her stings. What a waste. I’m telling you, this is not the movie Peyton Reed wanted to make.

*I’m telling you, this is not the movie Peyton Reed wanted to make.*

This is iron man 2 and age of Ultron all over again. A film made solely to introduce new characters and to progress the overall saga and the film loses its identity while doing so😐

@PlusUltra - I was trying to avoid spoilers, but considering that Wasp is in my top 5 Avengers, that is a disappointment. I was hoping this film would be the springboard to lock Wasp as the next Avengers leader. It sounds like this film does her nothing but disservice.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/17/2023, 11:05 AM
@AmazingFILMporg - I will not stand for this injustice. Age of Ultron is a great movie on itself. Might even dare argue it's better than Avengers 2012
Taonrey

@bkmeijer1 - 100% better than the first avengers movie
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/17/2023, 11:33 AM
@Taonrey - it's a strange case for me. I think Age of Ultron is better on many fronts, but unlike Avengers I do have some issues with Age of Ultron.

All in all though, Age of Ultron is more memorable.
Taonrey
Taonrey - 2/17/2023, 11:43 AM
@bkmeijer1 - it's a good movie but I have a few issues with it, only 2 minutes longer than AOU but feels way longer. It's where marvel started to give everyone Tony Starks personality, speaking of which, Josh seem to only be able to write well for Tony and Bruce(also an issue with AOU)
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/17/2023, 11:47 AM
@Taonrey - I think the reason why Joss' characters work so well, is because he writes them as extreme versions of themselves.

Stark is far more witty, Cap more righteous, Thor more shakespearean, etc. And that leads to interesting dynamics as well.
Taonrey
Taonrey - 2/17/2023, 11:48 AM
@bkmeijer1 - actually think Thor and cap were both hurt by his writing. Literally the only characters I think he did well were Bruce and Tony. Loki was good as well.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/17/2023, 11:55 AM
@Taonrey - I do agree on Thor. The guy went full Shakespeare. Think Cap and Thor thrived much better in the Russo directed movies.

Still, I like Whedon's character dynamics. Few scenes come close to the lab scene from the first Avengers movie imo.
