Universal and Illumination's animated Super Mario Bros. Movie jumped into theaters last Wednesday, and the decision to release the video game adaptation mid-week ahead of the Easter Weekend break has paid off big time for the studios.

As previously reported, Mario scored the biggest opening ever for an animated movie, and after just one week on general release, has already become the highest-grossing film of 2023 domestically.

The family-friendly adventure currently sits at $224.7 million in the U.S. - topping Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's entire domestic cume - and has passed the $400 million mark overseas.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie received mixed-negative reviews and is actually "rotten" at 56% on Rotten Tomatoes, which just goes to show that some movies really are critic-proof.

"Based on the world of Nintendo’s Mario games, the film invites audiences into a vibrant, thrilling new universe unlike any created before in an action-packed, exuberant cinematic comedy event. While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt; Jurassic World and The LEGO Movie franchises) and brother Luigi (Charlie Day; It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world.

But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi. The Super Mario Bros. Movie features an extraordinary comedic cast, including Jack Black (Jumanji films) as Bowser, Seth Rogen (Neighbors franchise) as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen (Portlandia, Saturday Night Live) as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson (American Dad!, Family Guy) as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco (Green Book) as Spike, plus a special voice appearance by Charles Martinet, who has voiced the characters of Mario and Luigi in the Super Mario games for more than 30 years.

@bobevanz - Bret Easton Ellis (author of American Psycho) often says that story doesn't matter, it's all about style and mood. This is what Mario did, and why it works so well. It's a simple story that you could boil down to one sentence. Perfect, doesn't need to be any more complicated than that. The strength comes in the frenetic execution. There is nonstop movement and an outstanding soundtrack.

It genuinely feels like a 90 minute roller coaster for the whole family. Every movie makes that claim, but this one actually aims to capture that feeling. Instead of trying to be clever, Super Mario tries to pull you into the world and make you feel like you're there. No amount of additional story would have improved those wild cart racing scenes.

I kinda hope other studios take notice and look at why Mario works so well. Immerse your audience first, present them with a style and mood they can't look away from, and the story (no matter how simple) will work just fine.

An aside... In a strange way, I would consider Super Mario to be this year's Fury Road. Stripped down story that's all about the action and immersion.

@keithvw - That is a really good angle to look at this from. Mario's story isnt the best, but it was a ton of fun and perfect for KIDS. Disney seems to have forgotten that their animated movies should be for kids sometimes. Universal/ Illumination is killing the game with animated films right now.

Who’d have thought that delivering a movie that meets fan expectations rather than subverts them would be such a hit. We know LucasFilm is not doing this, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Marvel doesn’t pivot as much as they should.

What a weird article. It’s currently the number 2 movie of 2023 only behind Avatar.

There’s even other comic book movies and stuff like Shazam 2, John Wick and D&D that Mario absolutely throttled.

I think at the time I did say it was because it was funny because the Rock was very vocal about saving and becoming the face of the franchise and instead he did the equivalent of showing up to thanksgiving dinner with Boston market instead of an actual home cooked meal.
