AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM Director James Wan Mocks "Hilarious" Trailer Teaser For Upcoming Sequel

Warner Bros. Discovery announced the release of the first Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom trailer with a "trailer teaser," but comments from James Wan appear to suggest the filmmaker doesn't exactly approve.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is the latest DCEU movie to find itself mired in claims of problems behind the scenes, and all signs sadly point to it being another box office bomb when the troubled franchise reaches its end this December.

In some respects, it's hard to believe the sequel appears destined for failure, especially after 2018's Aquaman made over $1.1 billion worldwide. This follow-up, however, comes our way half a decade later and at a time when moviegoers know to expect disappointment from the DCEU.

Has director James Wan also thrown in the towel?

He's had a hard time of it making Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, with studio interference and abysmal results at test screenings no doubt resulting in a torturous post-production process. However, we're still surprised to see him point out the ridiculousness of his movie getting a trailer teaser while responding to a fan on Instagram!

"Lol is this a f*cking trailer for a trailer?" one fan asked, prompting the filmmaker to respond by saying, "Haha. I know, it's hilarious."

You'd think Wan would be happy to see Warner Bros. finally promote the movie but despite sharing the footage, he clearly didn't appreciate this approach to marketing the long-delayed sequel.

In many respects, that's not surprising. For a time, trailer teasers became the norm and we'd sometimes see multiple short videos released to hype the release of a full trailer. However, it's become a dated approach to marketing and one which studios abandoned after they became more frustrating than exciting for fans. The fact Warner Bros. has gone down this route...well, it's not overly surprising.

Take a look at Wan's comments below.

Director James Wan and Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa - along with Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman - return in the sequel to the highest-grossing DC film of all time: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.

All returning to the roles they originated, Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry/Aquaman, now balancing his duties as both the King of Atlantis and a new father; Patrick Wilson is Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother and his nemesis, who must now step into a new role as his brother’s reluctant ally; Amber Heard is Mera, Atlantis’ Queen and mother of the heir to the throne; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Black Manta, committed more than ever to avenge his father’s death by destroying Aquaman, his family and Atlantis; and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, a fierce leader and mother with the heart of a warrior. Also reprising their roles are Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin.

The screenplay is by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, from a story by James Wan & David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Jason Momoa & Thomas Pa’a Sibbett.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released on December 20.

Can't wait until a movie comes up that's epic enough to warrant a trailer for the trailer for the trailer

We can all agree James Wan is a competent director. It's a shame he has his hands tied with this project.

@CyberNigerian -

IDK, Wann has made some mediocre films lately. He is heavily involved in the conjuring universe films which are shit.😐

He made malignant which was awful.

Even the first Aquaman was ok but it was the beginning of his downward spiral 🥲

@AmazingFILMporg - that movie has a dramatic zoom in after someone says “I’m adopted”. There’s no way they didn’t know how funny that is

Wan ain’t [frick]ing with this movie after WB put their grubby hands all over it. He ain’t Ayer, he got integrity.

A trailer for a trailer is indeed ridiculous. But not as ridiculous as when the trailer for the trailer plays at the beginning of the trailer. That is close the browser tab and forget about it levels of ridiculous.

@TheManWithoutFear - Came here to say just this. The modern trend of mini trailer summaries at the beginning of trailers is even stupider than teaser trailers.

Nothing wrong with teasers when they are released long before the trailer and that they are smart.

Teasers use to be cool

What's with directors being this "don't give a damn"? Sandberg with Shazam 2, Waititi with Thor 4, and now this?

@CoHost - As a director, you're always 2 failures away from being sidelined.

When your movie is taken away from you it becomes a work fo hire kind of project, so it's better to just distance yourself like Raimi did for example, at least you won't be viewed as the sole responsible for the failures of the studios.

Look at muschietti defending "artistic choices" for the Flash. It only makes him look like an incompetent idiot and it will damage the trust of other producers and studios.

If Warner/Gunn drops Muschetti from batman or doesn't give him the chance of working on another project for them, it's going to be hard for him to recover.

@CoHost - Likely multiple factors contributing - Movies not doing as well, fans not liking them as much, studio interference in some cases, being forced into bad writing or studio mandates, maybe they have genre fatigue.

Either way I’m all here for it. While it may come across as a bit petty, I find it much more honest than the old and fake “studio man” approach taken in Hollywood.

Wait, why am I looking at a tweet with a screenshot attached and not just the screenshot or link to the trailer/comment itself?

I don't get why they don't market this. Even if it is a bad film, it could still do well. Look at the early Transformers and Twilight films.

@Forthas - People will boycott this film because of amber turd the first part s probably in my top 5 d ska and even I'm boycotting it I saw the flash in spite of ezra Miller but they didn't frame someone else for their shenanigans and destroy that persons career I'm boycotting this film cause I stand with johnny depp

@TheCoonII - No, you're right, Ezra didn't frame anyone else. But he did kidnap a mother and her kids to make them live on his drug filled secret cult farm where he has to steal other people's booze to get them drunk enough for whatever he did to them. He's destroying the lives, not carreer, of more than one people at the same time.

Glad to know that's where you draw the line. Moral fiber is important. Amber is a turd, but Ezra is a litteral monster.

@OrgasmicPotatoe - Both their careers is in the shitter, so they have that in common.
They were not great actors to begin with, so no chance for them to do a RDJ comeback.

James Wan and Blumhouse are trying to merge. This signals to me that Wan is firmly planted in the Horror genre.

Why can't WB seem to do anything right with its superhero movies? From the characterization, the stories, the effects, and even the advertizing. It is truly an epic display of incompetence.
