AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM Director James Wan Reveals What Led To Him Returning For The Sequel

James Wan isn't the biggest fan of sequels, but in a new interview, the filmmaker explains what led to him returning for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and which characters he plans to put the spotlight on.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to be released next December, and shooting on the DC Comics sequel is already underway. Very little has been revealed about the movie, though we know the spotlight is going to remain on Arthur Curry, Mera, Black Manta, and Orm as their respective stories continue.

Talking to IGN, director James Wan explained that the opportunity to return to those characters was what drew him to an Aquaman follow-up. Revealing that it was his aim to "[find] a story that I think is worthy and if not better than the first movie," he added: "I helped shape and create these characters that I eventually fall in love with, and I feel like I'm not done with them yet. So I feel like I owe them one more story from me."

The filmmaker would go to say that he was particularly excited to "continue the next chapter of Arthur Curry's story, and Orm's story, and Mera's story, and Black Manta's story," and credits screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick for "finding a really cool story to bring all these characters back, and then growing them in a big way, and taking them to the next level or the next chapter of their lives."

Clearly, Wan has ambitious plans for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and it's thought that the titular lost kingdom will be Necrus, a domain ruled over by relatively obscure villain, Mongo.

Of course, with Black Manta expected to take centre stage as the movie's big bad, we're not expecting Mongo to factor too heavily into proceedings, as it's been clear from the start that Aquaman was meant to set the stage for Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to take on a much larger role in the sequel.

Fingers crossed more is revealed during DC FanDome in October.

@Twenty23Three - Its all about chasing that money. Most of the sequels he direct suck so it definitely isn't a good story...

Man that Ocean Master costume might be one of the greatest comic to movie costumes I’ve ever seen. Just so clean.

@BreakTheCode - The costume department in general for Aquaman was top tier.

@BreakTheCode - I dunno it looked too fake because of all the cgi overlays because most of the movie was under water. I prefer practical like Toby's spiderman , christopher reeve's superman, or Ron Perlman as Hellboy.

It's obviously a stash of cash, but also how hard they wanna work for that stash. Feel like Wan is willing to put in some effort for that.

He's the main reason why the first film worked so it's great he's back. Hope they properly utilize Black Manta in this one.

I'm mostly looking forward to Black Manta in this movie. Not just because Yahya is a great actor, but because saying his name makes me smile. YAHYA! :)

Genre blending usually leads to new and interesting directions, but the first movie tried to play with too many and felt disjointed. It jumps from 80s action movie to lovecratian horror to romance to martial arts movie to Macguffin hunt music video to to slapstick comedy to gladiator to Arthurian to kaiju (to name a few) and it's just too much.

A little more focus and we're gold.

If it wasn't for the CGI, the first film would have sucked majorly for me.

- The story was garbage along with the bad acting.

But I too thought Ocean Master's costume along with Black Manta's were the best!

First Aquaman had way too much going on. It was basically "2 Brothers" from Rick & Morty.
