AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM Director Weighs In On Batman Rumors And Amber Heard's Mera Comments

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom director James Wan has addressed reports that at least one Batman was set to appear in the sequel prior to reshoots. He also weighs in on Amber Heard's Mera complaints...

It's no secret that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom had a tumultuous journey to the screen, but after numerous re-writes, re-shoots, and (supposedly) disastrous test-screenings, James Wan's DC Comics will be swimming into theaters later this year.

While chatting to EW, Wan addressed some of the reports/rumors relating to the movie that have been doing the rounds, including Batman's involvement, and comments made by Mera actress Amber Heard back when filming was still underway.

The trades had claimed that, at different points, both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton were set to make appearances in Aquaman 2 before their scenes were cut to make the film more standalone in nature.

“The tricky thing early on was not knowing whether Aquaman would come out first or come out after [The Flash]. So, we just had to be prepared,” Wan said. “At the end of the day, the best thing I would say about this movie is that it is not connected in any way to any of those films. That’s the bottom line.”

Star Jason Momoa basically confirmed that Ben Affleck's take on Bruce Wayne/Batman would - or was going to - appear in an Instagram post, but to this, Wan would only offer a "no comment," before adding: "You’re going to have to wait for the movie to come out.”

As for Heard, following her highly-publicized court case with ex-husband Johnny Depp, the actress stated that Warner Bros. “didn’t want to include me” in the sequel due to the fallout of her divorce, claiming that her role had been “pared down” and her action scenes “taken away.”

Wan counters by claiming that Mera was never going to be a big part of the story, with Aquaman's relationship with his estranged half-brother Orm being the main focus.

“I always pitched this to everyone from the get-go. The first Aquaman was Arthur and Mera’s journey. The second movie was always going to be Arthur and Orm. So, the first was a romance action-adventure movie, the second one is a bromance action-adventure movie. We’ll leave it at that.”

The filmmaker did not dispute reports that James Gunn had some input on the movie, however. “I’ve known James since way back, right? We’re horror guys, and so I’m definitely open to ideas. But, at the end of the day, this is my movie.”

The first trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be online tomorrow.

"Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.

All returning to the roles they originated, Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry/Aquaman, now balancing his duties as both the King of Atlantis and a new father; Patrick Wilson is Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother and his nemesis, who must now step into a new role as his brother’s reluctant ally; Amber Heard is Mera, Atlantis’ Queen and mother of the heir to the throne; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Black Manta, committed more than ever to avenge his father’s death by destroying Aquaman, his family and Atlantis; and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, a fierce leader and mother with the heart of a warrior. Also reprising their roles are Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin."

What romance? Their chemistry was nonexistent.

@GhostDog - that's what you get when you hire models instead of actresses.

@Usernametaken - I really feel sorry for Wan. I’ll bet it’s the same shit as always where the CBM director has to say everything is fine and there was no interference until the movie finishes its theatrical run so it doesn’t tank.

@Tasmaniac - It might not be that bad, maybe the changes were minor and he got to do his movie.

But to be honest, I don't think Wan's movies are a "sure thing" when it comes to quality. He did gread with Saw and Conjuring 1 & 2, but the rest of his career as a director or producer is not that stellar (yet).

I know doom posting and reporting on the multiple reshoots and Amber Heard and all that is more juicy, but James Wan literally states there's Ray Harryhausen influence on this film and that people he showed it to have told him that they get the vibes??? That's a very refreshing vision for a modern superhero blockbuster. Like, that's what I wanna see talked about here.

Will this be the 8th DCEU movie flop in a row?

It looks like it

@WakandaTech - I'm still of the opinion this is their safest bet since... well, Aquaman in 2018. I can't see it going below Black Adam, but who knows? They dropped the ball especially with the three films already released this year. What's for sure is that this is coming for a notable drop from the first film, even if you take China out of the picture.

@WakandaTech - I don't even remember what the other movies are before Black Adam.

With it flop? Maybe. I just hope it won't be as forgettable as the last 8. Don't need to be memorable either, but I do look forward to a fun ride

I sense some tension in his response regarding James Gunn. If that is the case, it would seem that James Gunn lacks any kind of collaborative approach.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 9/13/2023, 4:36 PM
@Forthas - I'm not getting that at all. The opposite even. To me it implies Gunn just let's the directors be it their movie, not his. His ideas are just that. Ideas, not mandates
Forthas
Forthas - 9/13/2023, 5:06 PM
@bkmeijer1 - But don't you get the impression that James Wan is not being asked to come back despite helming the most successful DCEU film? Plus the number of reshoots that the film has had is a thing and his star actor seems like he is going to be recast. How in the world could James Wan be OK with all of that?
Usernametaken
Usernametaken - 9/13/2023, 6:08 PM
@Forthas - You might be extrapolating here. Until proven of the contrary, no directors from the DCEU is persona non grata for the DCU.

James Gunn just have to be smarter in choosing who would be good at directing what. I still think Snyder would be great at directing another R-rated DC movie (as long as he doesn't write it).

I also think we should all expect Del Toro helming a DCU movie at some point, he always wanted to and Gunn is not someone who would say no to that.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 9/14/2023, 1:26 AM
@Forthas - no not really. He still gets to make this movie. And like he said, reshoots are necessarily a bad thing.

Shouldn't matter though when the movie is released, if the movie makes clear reference to when it takes place. Kinda hoping it takes place before the Flash, just so I can see more happy Affleck as Batman.
