AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM Spoilers Reveal Whether Amber Heard's Mera Lives Or Dies In The Movie

There's been heaps of speculation about Amber Heard's role as Mera in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and we finally have details about whether the character survives and the amount of screentime she has...

By JoshWilding - Dec 20, 2023 02:12 PM EST

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's defamation battle saw a lot of dirty laundry aired in the courtroom last year, and while the Pirates of the Caribbean star was the victor from a legal standpoint (Heard was found liable in all three matters of defamation), both their careers have suffered.

While Depp is slowly attempting to mount a comeback, Heard seems to have been largely ostracised from Hollywood. It's been widely reported she was unhappy with her role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom being cut down in response to the bad press, while she's levelled some pretty wild accusations at her co-star, Jason Momoa as well (Heard alleges that he showed up on set drunk and dressed like Depp).

So, exactly what happens to Mera in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom? We've been sent some early details about the character's fate and Heard's screen time.

During the sequel's opening scenes, we learn that four years have passed since the events of Aquaman and, in that time, Arthur Curry and Mera have married and had a child. They live on the surface in Thomas Curry's lighthouse and occasionally travel back to Atlantis to fulfil their duties as the kingdom's monarchs.

When Black Manta returns, Mera is there when Arthur meets with Atlantis council and later part of a battle with the villain when the returning villain attempts to invade the undersea nation. During the fight, Manta wounds Mera with his lasers...but she survives!

This leads to her being sidelined for a huge chunk of the movie, hence why Arthur has no other choice than to seek help from his half-brother Orm (we're sure you'll remember Wan defending Heard's reduced role by saying he wanted to instead focus on the relationship between the brothers).

Mera does, however, return during the final battle to fend off Black Manta and, as she attempts to rescue her and Aquaman's son, the villain throws his black trident at her...only for the hero to survive when Orm catches it before it can reach her!

We'll be taking a deep dive into Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's ending tomorrow, but yes, Amber Heard's Mera survives the events of this movie. With the DCEU reaching its end, though, this will still be the last time we see the character on screen.

Director James Wan and Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa - along with Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman - return in the sequel to the highest-grossing DC film of all time: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

The movie splashes down into theaters on December 22.

There's gonna be a lot of rage in the comments.

But honestly, what does it matter when the whole franchise is dead.

@EgoEgor - people really shouldn't care this much

@EgoEgor - Yeah, just don't go see it. Simple. Only a year and a half till Superman Legacy and this'll all be just a bad dream.

They should’ve just killed everyone at the end in this movie once the studio announced Gunn would rebutt the DCU. Literally just kill Superman, Batman and Wonderwoman in the opening act.

@slickrickdesigns - I think that'd be a good way to open COIE down the line. Make the DCEU Pariah's universe (i.e. the first universe that gets destroyed by the Anti-Monitor)

I can like Amber Heard as Mera without liking her as a person, she's still hot with red hair to me. Ezra Miller also did really good when he needed to be emotional in the Flash. Gotta give DC credit for not giving up on their actors and letting the show go on and not wanting to ruin the immersion, I feel they dont get enough credit for that...

He was a Horrible Berry Allen.

I'm glad her character survived (I'm not a fan of heroes dying unnecessarily).

It looks like there will be lots of cool scenes in the movie, so I'll see it.

They should've replaced her with Deborah Ann Woll and then they wouldn't have felt the need to reduce Mera's role.

"...occasionally travel back to Atlantis to fulfil their duties as the kingdom's monarchs."

They don't even reside in the area that they preside over! Atlantis needs monarchs who are PRESENT 24/7!

Rocktopus for king!
Knightrider
Knightrider - 12/20/2023, 4:19 PM
@GhostDog - Well… I guess the English monarchy don’t in many nations they claim to rule. Also, monarchies don’t do anything so them being there or not probably doesn’t mean mich
GhostDog
GhostDog - 12/20/2023, 4:20 PM
@Knightrider - they actually do have a hand in governance I think right? Arthur and Mera. At least in the comics. They have their councils and what not but they do make authoritiative decisions that impact the populace and law, etc.
Knightrider
Knightrider - 12/20/2023, 10:53 PM
@GhostDog - I think in the UK it is basically symbolic.

As for colonies, I think more people are starting to see that their wealth, status is built on some pretty horrific acts, some of which were committed under Elizabeth’s reign, and that has them debating the need for a royal family.

ObserverIO

@Knightrider - Every country was born in blood and immorality. Every single one. Nobody stands up and declares themselves king without having to kill everyone who disagrees.
