AQUAMAN Star Jason Momoa Acknowledges That "None Of My Movies Are Going To The Awards"

It appears Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star Jason Momoa may be mulling over a change to how he approaches future acting gigs after admitting his movies aren't exactly the type to receive awards attention.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom may have slightly exceeded expectations at the worldwide box office, but a near-$400 million haul is still a far cry from its predecessor's mighty $1.1 billion.

Jason Momoa is now expected to bid farewell to Arthur Curry and while there's a chance he'll get to play Lobo in the DCU, that's far from confirmed or guaranteed. The actor certainly doesn't need a superhero role (it's hard not to wonder how different his career might have looked had he not declined to play Guardians of the Galaxy's Drax) and he may be considering making a change.

Talking to Variety about his new travel series, On the Roam, on Max, Momoa talked about what else he hopes to accomplish in his career.

"I don’t really think I’ve done anything so far," he tells the trade. "I’m not going to be able to master all of these things. I’m a solid C+ to B- at everything. But I like doing a lot of different things, and I’m not an A at one thing."

"I really went after comedy. 'SNL' let me on twice. I tried 'Slumberland,' and it did OK," Momoa continued. "I have 'Minecraft.' I’m going to do another comedy-esque action thing with Dave Bautista after that. If people love this, I’d love to do a Season 2."

After putting himself on the map as Game of Thrones' Khal Drogo, the actor later took on action roles in the likes of Justice League and Fast X. However, he's all too aware that those projects aren't likely to receive any awards attention.

"There’s some movies out there that I gotta go back to, and I’m sure if you did your homework, you’ll know what movies I gotta go back on," Momoa explained. "I’ve just never been a part of movies that - none of my movies are going to the awards. I’m not really that guy. So maybe one day it’d be nice to do one of those kinds of movies, where it’s a really, really good movie."

As for his future with the Fast & Furious franchise, he added, "I put out my ideas and we’ll see where it goes. But that’s probably a ways off. That’ll be fun to do. It’s fun playing the villain. It’s wonderful to play the villain."

It will be interesting to see whether Momoa tries his hand at a serious drama now the Aquaman franchise is in his rearview. Robert Downey Jr. proved it's possible to move on from playing a superhero, though plenty of other actors have struggled.

What would you like to see from Momoa on screen moving forward?

Well you are an action movie star, different kind of acting.

@marvel72 - He is and at least he's humble and very self-aware.

@lazlodaytona - that was kinda sad. He could be if he truly wanted. Of course it’s a lot easier sticking to what works.

Being a lead isn't implied anywhere here.

And yet, Dune has him in a Best Picture nominee. Even Reese Witherspoon couldn't accomplish that.

@CoHost - Reese Witherspoon? Random much :D

@CoHost -

Even Reese Witherspoon couldn't accomplish that.

Um....she's actually accomplished more than that. She's been nominated for two Academy Awards (won one of them), nine Golden Globe Awards (won), nominated/won a BAFTA and a long list of other things.

Out of curiosity, why'd you pick her? 🤔
CoHost
CoHost - 1/19/2024, 1:08 PM
@Humperdink - Because she's one of the most iconic actors of our generation and she's yet to be in a movie that was nominated for Best Picture. Will Smith used to be until King Richard. I'd mention Ryan Reynolds but he's in no way "iconic". Will Ferrell's in Barbie and that's getting a BP nom soon.

I respect him so much more as an actor now. The fact that he picks different roles that fit his vibe and not fit his pretentious ego is refreshing. I feel like Pedro Pascal has that same mindset. Do what you love and what you find fun. Don't let pretentious awards and egomaniacs in Hollywood bash you and try to derail your train.
Fogs
Fogs - 1/19/2024, 8:54 AM
@SonOfAGif - Totally. I wonder the ego trip you're prone to when becoming a Hollywood actor. Very hard to know your thing and to be honest about it.
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 1/19/2024, 10:07 AM
@Fogs - Exactly. We have seen an actor go from "I loved this character and can't wait for you to see it!" To "It was a mistake role that I regret and I will never do a role like that again" and this is after they win a Golden Globe or get nominated for one.

I mean he did do Dune but otherwise , he’s right…

It will be interesting to see him head an A24 drama like The Rock is doing now though.

Anyway i like Momoa , dude has charisma in spades and seems like a genuinely fun dude to hang with!!.

If you combined his Conan with a film like the Northman then I could see him doing a meaty sword and sandal epic. He just needs the right director to guide him. Oddly some other franchises he might be great in are a Thunder Cats film and of course Lobo. While his turn as Duncan Idaho was fine, I contend it was one of two slight miscasts in Dune.

He seems like he actually could be the dude his character) from one of the early scenes in the first Aquaman when he's at the bar with his dad. Those dudes come up to him looking like they want a fight but simply wanted a selfie with him. Then they all proceed to hang out and get obliterated :D

Jason just seems he'd be the "fun" guy to hang with no matter what the situation.

I've liked Momoa since his Stargate Atlantis days, and even there he showed that he has range beyond a 1-dimensional meathead. As a previous commenter said, Momoa knows his lane. He pursues the projects that interest him instead of some elusive Oscar bait, so there's an authenticity and lack of pretentiousness to him that I appreciate.

Plus the dude's got charisma out the wazoo and clearly seems to enjoy living in the moment. Good on him.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 1/19/2024, 9:43 AM
@AscendedExtra - Oh I don't know about that with Atlantis, just for a good while the character was written as a 1-dimensional meathead but dispite that made the character work and be embraced by fans (so would say he made it at least 2D during those earlier days). However when they actualy gave him stuff to realy chew on like delving into his past before his civilisation was destroyed or his time as a runner for the wraith he was great and acted well giving a LOT of depth and emotion to the role.

Anway, whatever level of talent folk think he has as a person seems a realy cool dude and when given the roles to do so oozes charisma on the screen too even if not the sort likely to get a best actor oscar in the foreseeable future.

I really liked him in Dune, but I feel like that's still the only movie that's managed to make good use of him. I hope he branches out into more interesting stuff if he wants, he was so checked out from Aquaman 2 that it's evident he has no passion for this role anymore. Maybe Gunn's Lobo and future Dune sequels will open new doors for him

awards are overrated and only really just for elite bragging. there are tons of Hollywood legends especially in the action department that never won any of the over bloated elite awards. key is just be comfortable in your own career and have fun no matter if its Scorsese heavy handed dramas or comic book movies. Momoa definitely looks like he is having fun.

Awards are overrated and what happened almost a week ago at the Emmys with things like Better Call Saul not winning a single accolade is proof that they are not always the be-all and end-all of business in Hollywood.

I agree that he and everyone else should just stick to doing what they like, as long as they're enjoying and having fun they're doing the right thing.

I’d like to see him in a role similar to that of Rambo, a combat veteran with PTSD. In a very serious drama, I’m sure he could do it, but I think Stallone would have to approve it and maybe direct it as well, especially if it’s a new interpretation of Rambo.

Fast and furious 10 he was awesome. The movie sucked of course, but Momoa brought anither skill to his acting. A tough queerness. I think he can make something good, he just needs the material, director.

He actually could be very good drama/romance actor, but been hanging too long with action movies.
