AQUAMAN & THE LOST KINGDOM Has Set A Frustrating New Record For The DCEU

Barring a last-minute delay (which is still a possibility given the ongoing Hollywood strikes), Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will swim into theatres as scheduled on December 20, and James Wan's DC Comics sequel has now set a rather frustrating record for the DCEU.

Though a brief promo was screened for those in attendance during Warner Bros.' presentation at CinemaCon earlier this year, we've yet to see so much as a frame of officially-released footage from the movie, let alone a first teaser.

With Aquaman 2 set to arrive 112 days from now, it's set a new record for the shortest window between the release of a film's first trailer and its theatrical debut.

The previous record holder was The Flash, which released its first trailer on February 12, 124 days before the Scarlet Speedster's divisive solo debut raced onto the big screen on June 16.

A recent rumor indicated that WB/DC Studios are planning to screen the Aquaman teaser during New York Comic-Con in October, but that's yet to be confirmed.

A (very) late trailer shouldn't necessarily be cause for concern, but we have heard that The Lost Kingdom is a bit of a mess (it's actually been described as an unmitigated disaster), so it's entirely possible the studio is still attempting to figure out the best way to market it.

In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, when an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.

The movie stars Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Nicole Kidman (Atlanna), Patrick Wilson (Orm), Amber Heard (Mera), Yahya Adbdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), and Dolph Lundgren (King Nereus), along with newcomers in the form of Pilou Asbæk, Vincent Regan, and Indya Moore.

It's only a mess if DC/WB have made it a mess! The director did a very good job with the first one so I'm sure he didn't make the second one a so-called mess.
It sounds like the BRAINDEAD decisions that DC/WB seem to always make if it is true is what makes this movie a mess!

Well they could push the movie into next year....they already did it with Dune 2. But thats going to be 3 times and 3 years this movie has been delayed. Lets hope the CGI looks better than The Flash.

@mastakilla39 - Why delay it further?

@Dabs - Yeah let’s just get this over with. You can’t move on until the last movie in the current universe is released and behind us.

How funny would it be if they followed the same marketing as Miyazaki's latest film, not show any trailers whatsoever and just release it.

and then it makes a shit ton of money

Yes, because they have so many options with the strike preventing actors from promoting their films 🙄

@Origame - As long as the strike continues, marketing any movie will be tough.

One potential advantage this movie could have is that holiday release date. That is, if it’s not the disaster we have been hearing rumors about.

@VoiceofReason - It was huge in China, but I still have no idea why.
It's a pretty lousy movie imo; A tiny step up from the usual dreadful DCEU stuff, but still very dumb and bad.

@VoiceofReason - Im still wonder how avatar 2 made twice that… I work in an office with 200+ ppl and like only three of us saw it in theaters, and none of the people I know outside work saw it either. Convinced they juiced the numbers.

@ReverseFlasher - To me it felt like one of those movies that's on TNT all weekend (back in the day) and over the course of 3 days you catch enough pieces of it to put it together in your head but never care enough to sit through all of it.

@MarvelZombie616 - The Meg 2 made bank. A lot of people like big dumb fun movies. The first Aquaman was pretty big and dumb. This one is pretty difficult to predict.

Not only is the lack of early marketing for Aquaman 2 weird. But I thought the huge amount of marketing for Barbie was weird too.🤣 It's interesting seeing the two different extremes from WB. Clearly they've lost confidence in the DC property. It'll be interesting to see if a studio steps up, and tries to buy it. Especially if the Gunnverse isn't a home run.
IronSpider101
IronSpider101 - 9/1/2023, 4:26 AM
@99OPTIMISTPRIME - Seems likely they're deliberately doing this to make people forget these so there's more of a fresh mindset when Gunn's series starts. The fact that Flash doesn't tie in to the new series but rather ends on a goofy self-contained note seems to confirm the plan was and has been to do a hard reset with very minimal casting continuity.

The first Aquaman was a silly Thor ripoff with terrible actors. I still have a hard time understanding how it has a positive RT score and made a billion dollars.

I don't even understand the premise of the film...he goes in search of a Trident that will allow him to communicate with fish despite the fact the film shows us throughout that he was able to do that before he found it. That is Zack Snyder level storytelling and the people ate it up.
Razorface1
Razorface1 - 8/31/2023, 1:49 PM
@Forthas - wasnt it to talk specifically with the giant megafish? The discount kraken?
GeneralChaos
GeneralChaos - 8/31/2023, 2:55 PM
@Forthas - It made money mostly because of China. James Wan and China getting the film first were factors there.
Forthas

@Razorface1 - No! He could speak to her before he got the Trident.
