Late last night, 100 days from its theatrical release, Warner Bros. finally debuted the first footage from Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom via a 30-second teaser, with the full trailer set to drop this Thursday.

The promo follows recent reports that the studio had "given up" on James Wan's sequel, and basically decided not to spend more money on a massive marketing push for a film which they ultimately expect to flop.

This may or may not be accurate, but early test-screening reports were not good, and, if these new reactions are any indication, The Lost Kingdom has not been significantly improved by its reported three rounds of reshoots.

There are only a couple of Tweets (one of which has since been deleted), but this all lines up with previous reactions and when we've been told by several people who have seen the final version of the movie.

At the end of the day, fans will judge Aquaman 2 for themselves when it hits theaters, and it's worth noting that the first movie was a massive success despite a mixed reaction from critics and DC fans alike.

In addition, one eagle-eyed fans has noticed that Mera (Amber Heard) does appear in the teaser after all... way, way off in the background for a split-second. Apparently, Heard has about 20 minutes of screen-time in the movie.

The Lost Kingdom will be the final DCEU movie before the entire franchise is rebooted(?) in James Wan and Peter Safran's new DCU. We've heard mixed reports about Jason Momoa staying on as Arthur Curry, and there are rumors that he'll actually be taking on a new role (possibly as Lobo) down the line.

In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, when an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.

The movie stars Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Nicole Kidman (Atlanna), Patrick Wilson (Orm), Amber Heard (Mera), Yahya Adbdul-Mateen II (Black Manta), and Dolph Lundgren (King Nereus), along with newcomers in the form of Pilou Asbæk, Vincent Regan, and Indya Moore.

And what's really funny is that on Facebook this site's caption is, "DC is back baby!"

@Tonic24k - Been trying to tell folks for months this movie isn't good at all!Had two bros that got to watch a screening months back..both massive DC fans...and one said it was boring and on the level of Black Adam and the other said it was awful.

There is or was...what felt like a 10 min scene of Aquaman in a bathtub drunk talking to a goldfish....they are still pushing the whole drunk thing with this dude. He's drunk in it a few times.

Time to flop

I dunno, i think DC has just had a bad run as it is, enough so that people are just going to buy into the "it's a bad movie" theme before even seeing it.

Wan is a more tha capable director though, he's proven he can play around with different genres to good effect.

If the movie seems like a mess it's going to be down to DC changing stuff over and over again. Whislt the 1st wasn't perfect it was quite entertaining.

The mid VFX alone from those 30 seconds of footage look better than what we got in flash

@UniqNo - It’s true, DC is now synonymous with bad movies, and I’m not sure Gunn’s got what it takes to rehabilitate the brands image atp

@UniqNo - Nope the VFX/CGI is looking like shit and the story so far who knows.

@PlusUltra - I said it before but i still think Gunn should have just stayed quiet from the get go. let all the rumours fly and then after Aquaman had it's turn (like he should have allowed for the other movies this year) at making some money....then come out at comic con '24 and announce the reboot and the slate. Doing all that stuff at the start of the year hurt the brand (mostly the 2023 releases) more than it helped.

Let's see what he does though, I think it's a good pairing in having 1 look after the creative side and the other handling the business. I just think Gunn talks too much. That's what got him in trouble in the first place with Marvel/Disney.

@Matador - Maybe, but still better than what we got in Flash...

@UniqNo - You’re right that there is a general sentiment against DC right now. Even if this movie gets good reviews, it’s likely to underperform.

@PlusUltra - it only takes 2/3 good movies.
The quality just have to be consistent to build trust again.

The biggest pitfall though, is not spending outrageous amount of money on those movies.

250+ million dollar budgets and saving movies with costly reshoots is not a viable strategy .
Even Disney can't afford to do this kind of stupid shit anymore.

@UniqNo - Or on par with what happened with the Flash.

@UniqNo - I think word of mouth can help turn things around. But that can take some time

One of the main reasons "Daredevil" (the movie) failed is because it was too large a world - too many characters introduced/jammed-in all at once - instead of a solid intro for the main character.

"Green Lantern" did exactly the same thing - it was too large a world and too unfocused - it also ran far too long.

"Aquaman" - again, too large a world, too many characters, too long a running time (+ infantile dialogue).

THIS looks like the SAME deal.

People need to START learning from their mistakes.

Lower budget (less money to risk/lose if it fails), scaled-down intro for ONE, Main character. TIGHT script. 90 minutes maximum running time.

James Gunn needs a miracle at this point. Cause just saying that the universe will be rebooted won't mean much to the general public. They will see the DC brand and will assume it's bad.

@Urubrodi - The Joker and The Batman proves the contrary.

It only takes good critics and good word of mouth for a movie to be a success.

The smart thing to do though is keep the budget and expectations low for the first new DCU projects. Stop making 2h30min movies with 1h45min of CGI and actions.

Urubrodi - 9/11/2023, 11:43 AM
@Usernametaken - Those 2 movies are their own thing in their own bubble with a completely different take, heavily influenced by their directors visions. They don't try to fit an overall universe, they are not heavily attached to the brand, especially Joker. I'm not saying it will be impossible, but it'll be tricky. Gunn will try to construct a new cinematic universe, while still keeping a few vestiges of the DCEU.

Conquistador

@mountainman - Basing that on statistics, you'll likely be right., but Christmas time is likely going to be the only time when a DC movie will have any hope.

It likely will not get anyway near what the 1st did, but with the holidays and kids off school, parents who have to take them will likely add to more ticket sales. There also doesn't seem to be much competition (theratrically) unless we get a sleeper hit.

• I don't really want it connected to the other films beyond the first Aquaman. James Gunn's universe might never happen and the other films are messy.

• ORM/Arthur teaming up makes sense after the previous film, though it depends how its handled.

• Killing a major character is not really a reason in my view for a film to be hated, depends who it is and how it is handled.

• 'Action sucks' needs clarification on what that means

• 'Boring' in what respect? Were you not invested in the characters? Was it pacing?

Feels like general buzz remarks rather than actually elaborating.

@Scarilian - Yeah, i think they're creating (or adding to) the narrative that the film/DC sucks. So if people start talking about it now, by the time the movie comes out there's even less hope.

The whole premise of this movie screams lazy writing. After spending the first film searching for a lost trident, we spend this film searching for a lost kingdom. How original. Not to mention a team up of once enemy half brothers turned friends. Where have we seen that before...Hmmm?

Truth be told, no one cares about Aquaman. people barely care about DC movies at all. James Gunn needs to build a strong foundation for any hope of being successful at all, and so far, NOTHING he announced has me excited. I still like the Marvel content being released, but haven't loved anything by Marvel in years, so, maybe Superhero movies have run their course.
What they need is a less paint by numbers story to breath life back into the genre, and I don't care if it's Marvel or DC that does it.
