AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY - Rumored Details On The Origin Of Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom - Possible SPOILERS

Robert Downey Jr. is set to return to the MCU as Doctor Doom, and we may now have a better idea of what to expect from this take on the classic Marvel Comics villain...

A few weeks ago at San Diego Comic-Con, we learned that Robert Downey Jr. would be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe  - but not as Tony Stark. The Academy Award-winner will actually play a completely different character: Doctor Doom.

Recent rumors had claimed that RDJ would be playing an evil Variant of Tony Stark, but the actor was introduced as "Victor Von Doom," which obviously suggests that he'll be playing the iconic bad guy.

We still don't know for sure what the plan is, but Daniel Richtman may have given us a little more to go on.

Possible spoilers ahead.

According to the insider, Doom will come from the same alternate universe as Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. If this is accurate and Downey won't be (re)introduced as the villain in the MCU proper, it would indicate that he will indeed be a Stark Variant and not a brand-new character with no ties to the Armored Avenger.

Honestly, this makes a lot more sense than simply casting Downey as a different character (the guy is going to take that mask off at some point), and still leaves the door open for another variant of Doom to debut down the line.

Another scooper, MTTSH, recently shared the following about Doom.

"Doom isn’t truly evil; he believes he’s saving the Multiverse from incursions. According to his twisted logic, the only way for the Multiverse to survive is to unify all universes in one place (Battleworld) under his rule. He sees this as the sole path to ensuring survival for everyone."

Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027. Both films will be directed by the Russo brothers, who also make their MCU return after helming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

"Being able to create stories and explore characters within the Marvel Universe fulfilled a life-long dream of ours, and we discovered a powerful connection with audiences in each film that we made. We’re thrilled to collaborate once again with Kevin, Lou and the entire Marvel team to bring this epic adventure in storytelling to new and surprising places for both the fans and ourselves”, said The Russos in a statement after the SDCC panel.

Have another look at some photos Downey Jr. shared to Instagram after the big reveal below.

Well, I suspected that he could be from the FF universe…. If the scooper is correct, of course. But.. a character so relevant like this being a Stark variant? Cmon!

...in their universe, the Ancient One killed Victor's Mother. This set off a chain of events, which led to Doom's mother aligning with Mephisto, thus creating a full on fued with any sorcerers in disagreement with the usage of Darkhold magic in their realm...

@KennKathleen - this is something that reminds me Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom - Triumph and Torment, one of my favorite comics of all times (Stern and Mignola rocks here)

@cadunovaes01 - I'd prefer if they used T&T as a basis for Doctor Strange 2, with Kaecilius being revealed as Victor. Somehow he escapes the dark dimension and reaches Strange for help saving his mom. I wouldn't mind if they changed Mephisto for Dormammu, even. But they preferred the multiverse thing, to justify bringing other heroes to the MCU.

@cadunovaes01 - I don’t get how he’s a Stark Variant and why Josh is coming to that conclusion…

I mean we just got a movie that had Chris Evans reprise his role as Johnny Storm when he has already played Cap in the MCU and no one is saying they are variants of each other.

Given he was introduced as Victor Von Doom , I’m leaning towards him just sharing the same face instead of a Stark Variant which I think is the better of the 2 options

@TheFinestSmack - because make him unrelated to Stark and casting Downey just because portraying diferent characters is what actors do its too brave or too big brain for Feige and his Feng Shui gang

Of course he's a Stark variant. He's being played by Robert Downey Jr. This isn't rocket science.

There's no way they don't bring up the similarities to Stark. They could've gotten anyone else for considerably cheaper.

I don't get this part. what part about him being from the same universe as the FF makes him a Stark variant exactly? seems purely speculative.

SpiderParker - 8/16/2024, 12:28 AM
@Spidey91 - If anything it further proves that RDJ is Victor Von Doom, since the movie is set in 60s and its a fantastic four universe. I don't understand how 1 + 1 led to 11.

They even timed the announcement with Deadpool & Wolverine exactly when Chris Evans returned for Human Torch.

@ShimmyShimmyYA - I still think they should get John Malkovich to just play everyone. In every movie. With the only word in the script being 'Malkovich' over and over.
