Avengers 4 reshoot photos may refuel old rumor about [spoiler] romance

Today's set pictures from Avengers 4 reshoots feature a piece of jewelry last seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier on Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow. One that leads to speculation.

While today's set pictures from the untitled Avengers sequel revealed a fresh look for Chris Evan's Captain America, Paul Rudd's Ant-Man and Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, on second glance they also feature a costume detail on Black Widow that may have a bigger significance.

Reshoots for Avengers 4 are underway - Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) is also onset as confirmed on his Instagram account - and while we don't get to see Black Widow in full costume on the featured set pictures, there's a clear shot of a necklace around her neck, one that was last seen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014). The arrow shaped necklace had fans back then speculate about a romance between Hawkeye and Widow.

Of course that was before Joss Whedon shoehoerned a romance between Bruce Banner and Widow into 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, a storyline with no roots whatsoever in the Marvel source material. The director additionally wrote Clint Barton's character as having a family, similar to the outdated and not very well received Ultimate comic verse. It has since been confirmed that even the Russo brothers were unaware of these plans, as well as the actors, and Whedon himself stated that he went for the Banner/Romanoff romance only to fulfill the old "Beauty and the Beast" trope as well as to mess with those fans who had been rooting for a Hawkeye/Widow pairing. It's easy to speculate the Russo were hinting at a romance between Black Widow and Hawkeye in Winter Soldier, a storyline that has been happening in Marvel comics and cartoons in several universes - even as recently as in the Old Man Hawkeye comic.

If and how those old speculated plans and Whedon's version of romance will come back into play in Avengers 4, remains to be seen, but with speculation still high that Hawkeye's family was killed off with the snap, there's always a chance, the Russo brothers come back to a storyline here that many fans would favor over the hotly debated Widow/Hulk-romance.

Hawkeye had a family in the Ultimate Universe. So there’s a precedence for this.

Dude, what is this article? The amount of opinion and misinformation in such a small article is ridiculous. Hawkeye had a family in the ultimate universe, the one the MCU draws a lot of inspiration from and there are people that are actually a fan of the relationship between BB and NR.

A relationship seems irrelevant at this point.

Would be dumb for them to just give Black Widow another relationship rather than develop her character in other ways.

or she could be wearing it because, you know, he's her best friend and she doesn't know if he's alive? or in honor of his family (that probably died with the snap)? she's also friends with Clint's wife and one of their kids is named after her so... not every relationship between men and women have to be romantic.

Hahaha I was going to have a go at Josh for all the bias in this article (because with that amount of bias it had to be a Josh article right?) until I saw that the article was written by ‘hawkeyelover’ 😂. I guess the bias is self-evident lol. I dunno man I like Hawkeye having a family, he didn’t really feel like a character before that. Gave him some flavour.

This is a really unpopular opinion but I [frick]ing love the Banner/Natasha romance, and think it makes perfect sense. Whedon was right, Hawkeye and her felt platonic, like war buddies, kind of like Mal and Zoe in Firefly. Cap and her had no chemistry in that way, they feel more like big sis and lil brother. Banner and her had electric chemistry from their first scene in Avengers when she recruited him as he looked at a basonet and rocked it mournfully saying ‘I dont everytime get what I want’. It was set up from the beginning of the first movie. And the whole ‘we’re both monsters’ thing worked.

I think Widow and Banner was the only romance in the MCU that has been truly great except for Cap and Peggy. There have been decent ones, like Stark and Pepper, but few great ones. In my opinion, fans are being silly because it’s not in the comics. If it was a story from the ‘source material’ they would have wet thenselves. Ridiculous.

It bugs me when writers try to make out their opinion is either empirical fact or the widely-held opinion of 99% of the audience (like the “everyone hates Iron Man 2” trope... I like it!).

I thought the romance between Banner and Romanov in AoU was well written and beautifully played by Ruffalo and Johansson. It made perfect sense to me. A romance between Hawkeye and Widow would truly have been “shoehorning”. All of this has to be taken in the context of the MCU movies, not whichever comic run from the last sixty years happens to float your boat.

On the subject of AoU - the only (admittedly pretty big) flaw in the film for me is Ultron himself, never quite bought he was “in the room” with them (even Spader’s VO was a bit disembodied for me) - there are some great scenes that really set up the characters of the Avengers (particularly Thor, for those who think the comedy starts with Ragnarok - rewatch AoU!), and their working / social relationships.

For me it’s worth remembering that not every comic issue was an Earth / universe threatening event, sometimes it’d just be, i dunno, The Trapster or someone like that, but every single one added to what you knew and loved about the characters.

I’ll shut up, God I can’t wait til Avengers 4.

@Scarilian, @connorblaze, and @JLex -

The opportunity for Hawkeye to have a potential romantic connection to the Black Widow was ruined in Iron Man 2 when it was decided to skip over the Natasha's origin and go straight to her time working as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.!

Had Marvel Studios followed her origin, she would have fit in nicely with Anton Vanko as a part of the Russian resistance; unfortunately, MS decided to make the Crimson Dynamo from the comics into the father of Ivan Vanko, who was reimagined as an amalgamation of Whiplash and the Dynamo, which screwed up the idea of BW using Hawkeye to stay in the U.S.!
