With just a few days left in 2018, it's not surprising that people are already looking towards the plethora of movies coming in 2019, and that includes figuring out which films are the most anticipated of the year.

Now, thanks to a new poll conducted by Fandango for USA Today, we have a good idea of which movies fans are looking forward to the most, and it looks like it will be a good year for comic book movies.

According to the poll, Avengers: Endgame is the most anticipated movie of 2019 with Captain MarvelStar Wars: Episode IX, and Spider-Man: Far From Home claiming the subsequent three spots.

Aside from learning which films audiences were looking forward to, the poll also discovered which actors and actresses fans are most excited to see on the big screen, and once again things are looking good for Marvel Studios.

For the list of most anticipated actresses, Brie Larson earned the top spot with Scarlett Johansson and Karen Gillan also earning a place in the top five. Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Samuel L. Jackson made the top five most anticipated actors but lost the number one spot to Tom Hanks. Other notable comic book movie actors to make these two lists include Margot Robbie, Joaquin Phoenix and Sophie Turner.

Finally, Fandango ranked the most anticipated new standalone comic book movies and Captain Marvel topped the list, with Joker right behind it and Shazam! and Hellboy rounding out the bottom two.

Unscientific poll, by the way. But still a worthy conversation-piece. Good for Tom Hanks.

@Spock0Clock - what would be considered a scientific poll?
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 12/28/2018, 12:48 PM
@RocknRolla - (I believe) the methodology was that Fandango asked visitors to their website to fill out a survey. That means it reflects the views of the sample of Fandango visitors who opted to take the poll.

The sample size is pretty big, and that's certainly better than the kind of polls this site used to have, but it is still going to be skewed toward a certain kind of person. I'd assume they're people who are more movie die-hard types who follow the news about upcoming releases more closely than the average person or moviegoer. A quick Google search says that about 15 percent of movie tickets are sold online (which is significant, but it may be a skewed sample compared to more traditional moviegoers).

That said, it doesn't mean it's "wrong" in any meaningful sense.

It really depends on what you're trying to measure.

"Most Anticipated..." by Who? Fandango visitors with five minutes to waste on a survey? It's probably supremely accurate.

All potential movie-goers? It's hard to tell, but maybe pretty good.

All human beings on the planet? Probably very inaccurate, but that's largely irrelevant as a predictor of success for a movie since most people don't see very many movies in theaters at all.

@Spock0Clock - All legit concerns, but the last article I saw on here about such a poll didn't have Star Wars in the top ten. I have no idea what the methodology was there, but sometimes things just don't pass the sniff test. This one at least does that. I can't envision a single film on this list not making bank.

@MyBeard - I didn't see that poll, so I can't comment on it (and there's no need to dig it up for my sake). It's definitely important to never blow any single poll out of proportion.

@Spock0Clock - I agree. 538 times.

@MyBeard - @MyBeard - Was that the poll from imdb? I think that was based on page views from each movie, and the movies on that list were the movies coming out in 2019 that were the most visited on imdb. It makes sense Star Wars wasn´t on there. It seems to me that the imdb list is for the true movie buffs/nerds, and the fandango one is based on popularity from the general audience. I mean Dumbo and Star Wars on this list for example, but Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on the other, and talking to a lot of movie nerds on many different sites and irl, it does seem like The last Jedi is generally hated amongst most and made the nerds tired of SW. It´s kind of like The Dark Knight Rises or Avatar all over again. Movies that seems to be mostly remembered with disappointment today, where they were recieved very well by critics and audience at first.

@Jokerzreality - Yeah, that's the one. I don't have any reason to doubt the accuracy of their data, but I do question their methodology. It just doesn't seem like it captures actual anticipation for movies in as fair of a way as the Fandango one would exactly because of its biased sample. Casual moviegoers matter because there are more of them than anyone else. If IMDB's approach does only mostly capture the buffs/nerds it isn't a good one to draw any conclusions from.

I agree that reaction to TLJ has dampened enthusiasm for Star Wars; although "generally hated" is probably too strong. Solo undoubtedly suffered somewhat from the backlash, and did not have enough impact to rekindle the fires of fandom. Under normal circumstances Episode IX would be right up there with Avengers, but falling all the way out of the Top 10? Nah. If the IMDB process produces that kind of result, then that process is likely flawed.

Something must have been wrong with the site when you replied. I got 22 notifications.
