James Gunn Reminds Fans DC Studios Had NOTHING To Do With Warner Bros.' JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX

With Joker: Folie à Deux set to be one of Warner Bros.' biggest DC critical and commercial failures yet, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has smartly reminded fans that it's not his and Peter Safran's doing...

If you go by the CinemaScore aloneJoker: Folie à Deux is the worst comic book movie ever. That seems a tad harsh but it's clear comic book fans and regular filmgoers alike have wholly rejected Warner Bros. Discovery's Joker sequel.

Despite mostly positive reviews out of Venice last month, verdicts since have not been kind and the consensus seems to be that neither the story nor musical elements work.

After a disastrous 2023, the expectation was that Joker: Folie à Deux might turn things around for the brand ahead of a crucial 2025 which will launch a new DCU with Superman in July.

Instead, it's another critical and commercial flop, doing DC few favours as it looks to rebound from the DCEU era of storytelling. It probably won't surprise you then that DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn was quick to remind fans on social media that they had nothing to do with the critically panned sequel.

Director Todd Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver made similar comments last month at a pre-screening Q&A. "With all due respect to [Gunn and Safran]," he said, "this is kind of a Warner Brothers movie, and that's them also wanting it to be like, 'Okay, Todd did his thing. Let Todd continue to do his thing.'"

Silver chimed in to say Joker: Folie à Deux "started before [Gunn and Safran] even came up for it," prompting Phillips to remind those in attendance that this is "not like DC proper, even though it'll say DC after."

It's apparent that neither of them wanted to be associated with the DC brand any more than they had to be but that coukd do DC Studios the world of good when all is said and done. After all, the first project to boast their logo is The Penguin and that sits at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In our review of the movie, we concluded by saying, "Lady Gaga shines and Joaquin Phoenix brings more of the same to Joker: Folie à Deux, a wholly unnecessary sequel with no new ideas and nothing to say. It doesn’t work as a movie or a musical. What a waste of $200 million."

The Penguin also wasn't a DC Studios project, but that changed after he and the other high ups saw that it was actually good. Joker 2 not getting that label should've been a major red flag. Anyway, Gunn had no say in this movie due to how successful the first one was, so we can't exactly blame him for what happened. Then again, he's the same person who thought Flash was a masterpiece, so who knows really what he thinks.

@TheJok3r - Penguin was a DC Studios project. It might not have started as one, but all of the main stages of production was DC Studios. The Batman part II is a DC Studios movie too.

This Joker movie just killed what little chance Superman had at being successful at the box office. Gunn and his team would be smart to push it into 2026 to distance it from this train wreck of a movie. While they're at it, they might want to think about removing the DC logo form its marketing. That brand is pretty much dead now.

@TheJok3r - Your recommendations are pretty terrible and would just cost them more money, never mind that you’re clearly not confident in Superman, which already makes you the wrong person to ask for advice about what to do with the movie.

@TheJok3r - I think the general audience has no clue this is DC or what that means. Most probably think this is just a WB movie. Superman is safe

More reasons why I think he's a prick 🤣

All this picking and choosing crap is annoying. If Joker 2 isn't a DC studios film neither should penguin or the Batman be. This guy wants all of the glory and none of the blame when shit hits the fan.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 10/6/2024, 5:27 AM
@TheClungerine - He's not picking and choosing. It never was a DC Studios film. It's WB. It was always the very last WB DC movie.

@ObserverIO - then why is the penguin DC studios? Should that not be WB too?

I went to the Batman unmasked exhibition here in London a few weeks ago and thought it was strange why there was 0 promotion for this film but a massive Gunn superman poster there. Seems very shady to me

@TheClungerine - "This guy wants all of the glory and none of the blame"

Well, can you blame him? I'd do the same thing. I'd keep Batman too, no matter it's an Elseworlds. Atleast Batman is recognizable.

@bkmeijer1 - I don't blame him for not wanting anything to do with the joker tbh, that was always elsewords to me. However, the push to include other elswords movies shows under his banner because its successful(reeves Batman)looks sly to me. It should be all elsewords or none of it imo and considering this guy went so hard tryna sell us the Flash only for him to go out of his way as the DC content ceo to distance his DC studios from the joker in its opening weekend looks bad imo.

@TheClungerine - Wasn't Joker 2 already being shot when he was hired as the head of DC Studios? The Penguin however hadn't started shooting yet and Gunn himself confirmed that he gave notes on that project.

@HOTSHOT - gun started in October 22, joker started shooting 2 months after.

If he made changes to the flash he could of to the joker and put it under his DC studios banner.

The Batman was else world's and penguin started shooting March 23 (3 months after joker). Also he announced a Batman project whilst the Batman 2 is in development so what is going on 🤣 it looks like he's picking and choosing to me.

Hail James Gunn!

So the moral of the story is that Warner Brothers has in fact NOT changed and are letting directors do whatever they want with none steering the ship. I thought that was why they created a separate studio.

Gunn started in October of 2022 while Joker began shooting in December 2022. Plenty of time for Gunn to influence the final project. Maybe Todd Phillips refused to shoehorn Gunn's family members so it was deemed not a DC film.
RitoRevolto
RitoRevolto - 10/6/2024, 5:29 AM
@Forthas - Well, Gunn did say it wasn't part of DC studios. But even if it were solely up to WB, I would think they'd learn something after The Flash, Blue Beetle, Aquaman 2, etc etc.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 10/6/2024, 5:30 AM
@Forthas - Just because DC Studios existed doesn't mean that WB had to stop doing whatever DC film they were doing. Matt De Luca and Pam Abdy were given oversight of DC films when they got the WB gig and they knew that DC Studios was being formed so they rushed out a DC project while they could. After failing to rush out Man of Steel 2, they fast tracked Joker 2 instead.

This never ever had anything to do with James Gunn.
Forthas
Forthas - 10/6/2024, 5:37 AM
@RitoRevolto - He said he was responsible for ALL DC related content. I believe him when he says he has nothing to do with it but don't say you oversee all of it when you don't.

WB has learned nothing in the past 11 years. They were given a blueprint to follow with the Dark Knight Trilogy. Grounded character driven films. Whenever they followed that blueprint the neither lost money or embarrassed themselves. Yet they allow directors to infuse nihilism, comedy and now musicals in these films and then we sit back as they flush their money down the drain.
Forthas
Forthas - 10/6/2024, 5:40 AM
@ObserverIO - He was head of the studio when production began. If he did not have the power to oversee the development and marketing AFTER that then he was lying when he said he oversaw all DC related content.
RitoRevolto
RitoRevolto - 10/6/2024, 5:26 AM
I really hope for his and DC Studios/WB's sake that Superman does more than just okay with both critics and box office. WB is hemorrhaging so much blood right now.

Todd Phillips ignored James Gunn's notes on the film.

How are those notes looking now, Todd?

Wasn't Joker 2 supposed to be a DC Elseworlds movie? Now Gunn is taking the fall for it.

I mean , he’s right in that they had really nothing to do with it…

Folie a Deux started filming in December of 2022 while The Penguin did so in March 2023 (Safran & Gunn didn’t become heads of DC Studios till November 2022).

So basically the ball had been rolling on Joker for awhile before their arrival so they couldn’t give much or any input while for the latter they could & did apparently.
