How The AVENGERS: ENDGAME Directors Kept The Final Spoiler Scene A Secret From Tom Holland

The Spider-Man: Far From Home cast appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss the recent trailer and some major moments from Avengers: Endgame, including how a big scene was kept a secret from Tom Holland.

SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: ENDGAME ARE IN THIS ARTICLE.

It's no secret by now that Marvel Studios and Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo went to extreme lengths to avoid spoilers from leaking out. From partial scripts to complete lies about the scenes being filmed, just about every precaution was taken.

Appearing on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show following the debut of the new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, Tom Holland, who plays Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealed just how one of the saddest and most emotional moments in the film — and probably the MCU in general thus far — was kept a secret from him.

"This is how bad it is for me. I was told it was a wedding," Tom Holland said, referring to filming Tony Stark's funeral scene. "I showed up to the “wedding”, and I was like, “Where’s Robert?"

Holland, of course, has become notorious for accidentally letting spoilers slip out, though it's debatable as to whether or not these moments are planned. For instance, Holland "accidentally" revealed an Infinity War poster along with its release date.

Holland isn't the only MCU actor to be treated this way, though. Fellow Far From Home co-star Zendaya revealed that she and others were also given a heavily redacted script for the upcoming sequel and explained how difficult it can be to learn your lines when everything is blacked out.

While Holland may not have been aware that it was Tony Stark's funeral he was filming, he also wasn't the only actor from other Marvel films to be present for the scene. Cobie Smulders, who plays Agent Maria Hill and will also be appearing in Far From Home, recalled how amazing and "insane" it was that they were able to pull off filming that scene with so many different people involved. What made things even more confusing for everyone involved was that Black Panther hadn't even been released yet when the scene was shot, as Endgame was filmed directly after Infinity War.

Check out the full interview below. The funeral talk begins around the 5:15 mark, but it's worth watching the entire video becuase the cast also discusses the five-year time jump (which Kimmel mistakenly believes is a plot hole even though it's been explained countless times) and other topics related to Endgame.

Spider-Man: Far From Home swings into theaters on July 2, 2019.

Will we ever see a genuine superhero wedding in a movie?

@MasterMix - Perhaps, one day.

Would really tie things together. Hope they don't cast Storm too young to be a companion for our King. Also would be interested to see T'Challa's and Nakia's relationship be tested and for our girl Ororo to oust Nakia as the would-be Queen of Wakanda. Would also be cool to see how Shuri would react to that relationship in a similar way to how Sansa and Arya react to Jon Snow loving Dany in GOT

@LordCipher - By genuine I mean with superheroes in attendance.

@MasterMix - Based on the MCU's Peter Parker's age, we might have to wait a while for this one.

@LongMayHeReign - Hope not, that was a horrible relationship. Storm left from a powerful leader of the mutants during one of their lowest points and needing leadership to Black Panther's wife with nothing to do.

And the way they broke up? Oof. The entire debacle should be forgotten. Like Sins Past.

I gonna call BS. There’s no way he couldn’t have known about Tony’s death considering he was filming Far From Home and he was present at Tony’s death scene. If anything, Holland honestly should be congratulated for being able to keep his mouth shut for months about Tony’s death.

@Nerdman3000 - Could have filmed Tony's death scene after the funeral due to scheduling. You know they be filming these movies out of order.

So I wonder what they told Tom Holland when Tony Stark was dying right in front of Peter Parker?
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 5/11/2019, 4:31 PM
@IronGenesis - movie wasn't filmed in chronological order.

@IronGenesis - probably nothing. Its common practice not to film scenes in chronological order. Since the funeral scene required less special effects than the death scene its within reason that they filmed that before the actual death, so holland knew by then.
