AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Will Be A Story About 'Sacrifice' And 'Pain'

When Joe Russo - one of the directors for Avengers: Infinity War - was answering questions online, he revealed that delicate themes will be used in the storytelling, and to connect with audiences.

When Joe Russo was answering questions on Sino Weibo, a microblogging website, he came across the most important approach to storytelling him and his brother used for Avengers: Infinity War.

In one large quote, he mentioned how important it is to imply themes such as 'pain' and 'sacrifice' in the storytelling.

"For us the best stories have stakes. Characters have to make sacrifices. To really, really feel the true emotion and the hero’s journey they have to go through trials and those trials could cost them something.

He adds that they have gone beyond it being just a 'storytelling technique', seemingly trying to connect with audiences to what it really means to become a hero...

"So, for us, its very important that the heroes feel pain and that they make sacrifices because I think that, not only is it great storytelling, but it also is inspiring and I think we need a lot of inspiration in this world right now. So, for us, I don’t know if we can ever get you to accept it, but I promise you this: we’ll do our damnedest to tell you the best story possible, and what you do with it from there is up to you.”

It seems like Joe and Anthony Russo have crafted a deeply emotional superhero story, and with the stakes higher than ever in Avengers: Infinity War, it looks like our heroes will make some costly sacrifices.

@BaronZemo - I mean it is, it’s not necessarily worse (we’re just more aware of awful things bc everything can be recorded and shared now) but it still is pretty shit lol

@BaronZemo -

Yeah, the world has always been a complete mess. With the internet age we've started to notice it more.

It is a time where we do need inspirational films though, especially with all the stupid stuff happening nowadays.

@Forthas - moving away and not starting there are different things. Marvel got tired of every cbm being described as DARK but there is a time for Dark and Thanos is it

Can't wait for this film. My only concern, this is the Seinfeld finale all over again. Everybody has in their mind what they want this movie to be, and if it isn't, people will hate it. We'll see.

@SmokingMan - I... I actually like the Seinfeld finale.

Of course, I did see the whole series in syndication, so I guess it didn't matter to me as much.

@SmokingMan - "Everybody has in their mind what they want this movie to be, and if it isn't, people will hate it. "

Not me. I have learned better. I try to find out what these films are trying to be (from writers, actors, directors) and enjoy them on that level. It works. If I deviate from that, in regret it. My goal is to enjoy these films and not to allow negative behavior patterns have a negative influence on this goal.

I catch this for this, but "what I want this film to be" is a film with super heroes doing super hero things (because that what all of them are). And, "surprise, surprise", I enjoy all of them. I may not watch some of them a second time (although I "do" own most of them on Blu-ray), but I do enjoy them.

Adding to your thoughts, I keep reading comments about "fans" wanting some of these heroes to die, and I suspect many will be disappointed. Weekly shows and monthly comics kill characters for reasons having to do with them being weekly and monthly stories, and films do NOT have these same elements. Kevin has discussed this several times in interviews since the MCU began.

@Spock0Clock - I did too lol they were all horrible people from time to time and kinda deserved prison. I also liked the cinverstaion at the end if the ahow was the same as the beginning one. I'm just saying with the backlash of how everyone reacted
