LANTERNS: DC Studios Rumored To Be Eyeing ELVIS And CHEVALIER Star To Play DCU's John Stewart

With rumours still swirling about DC Studios' plans for Hal Jordan in Lanterns and the wider DCU, we finally have news on who might be in the running to suit up as John Stewart. Find more details here...

Much has been said about who will play Hal Jordan in DC Studios and HBO's Lanterns, with Avengers: Infinity War star Josh Brolin reportedly declining to wear the ring in this long-awaited reboot.

Ewan McGregor, Chris Pine, and Timothy Olyphant are all still in contention but what of John Stewart? There are plenty of fan casts but little has been said - even from the most unreliable scoopers - about who will play the fan-favourite Justice League Unlimited character.

Well, according to Daniel Richtman, Elvis star Kelvin Harrison Jr. is now being considered for the role of John Stewart.

The actor has received a Screen Actors Guild Award and nominations for a British Academy Film Award, Gotham Award, and Independent Spirit Award. Beginning his career with movies like 12 Years a Slave and Ender's Game, he's since risen to prominence for It Comes at NightLuce, WavesThe Trial of the Chicago 7, and Chevalier.

Harrison Jr. would be a strong pick for the role and it appears DC Studios' plan is to cast a big name industry veteran as Hal alongside a rising star, with the latter likely meant to serve as the DCU's main Green Lantern in future stories.

Superman will also introduce a Green Lantern in Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner; The Suicide Squad star is 53, leading to speculation that he and Hal will be in the later years of their respective Green Lantern Corps careers, opening the door to focusing on the likes of John, Kyle Rayner, and Jessica Cruz.

Stay tuned for updates as we have them.

DC Studios' Lanterns follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country) is serving as showrunner and executive producer and will write Lanterns with Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and comic book scribe Tom King (Supergirl).

When Lanterns' creative team was first revealed, James Gunn and Peter Safran, as Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of DC Studios, shared a joint statement which read, "We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm."

"John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with 'Superman.'"

Lanterns doesn't currently have a confirmed premiere date.

Why not Micheal B Jordan?? Or Idris Elba if they don’t plan on using him in Suicide Squid part 3/the Suicide Squid Vol2/ Suicide Squid Billie’s DCU reboot.

@slickrickdesigns - there's a default list of Black male actors for movies, and those two are certainly on that list. Let's go for some new, or lesser-known talent.

Aaron Pierre surprised the hell out of me in Rebel Ridge. He's going to blow up soon.

@regularmovieguy - I enjoyed rebel ridge and he was playing a character very close to how I see an John Stewart. He’d be perfect

@slickrickdesigns - I think iidris has a in his 50s right? They are looking for a younger John. Micheal b Jordan I admit is a good actor but there’s just something about him that I can’t put my finger on but I just don’t enjoy watching him. I think the only part I’ve liked him in is kilmonger.

@slickrickdesigns - I love Idris but wouldn't he be too old for what they're looking for in Stewart?
slickrickdesigns
slickrickdesigns - 9/19/2024, 1:42 PM
@JayLemle - it those are good actors. Proven to do good jobs and have a good enough following to bring an audience to a character not many people like and/or are familiar with.
You almost make it sound racist. It’s not a default thing, it’s a we know they can bring life to any role they play thing and I know they would most likely do a good job.

@lazlodaytona - isn’t Nathan Fillion like pretty damn Old too? Does age matter when CGI does most of the action work anyway?

@NonPlayerC - I’m not the biggest fan of Mike B Jordan but the dudes a good actor. He had more range than a lot of new actors.
But I get it some of you are just sick of seeing the same dudes on screen.
I just prefer to have a good actor in a role that matters to a cinematic universe.

@DocSpock - Man's 6′ 1″... what is your definition of short? Anyway, I know it's not gonna be popular around here to throw that kind of suggestion. But I think if they were to make one of these characters black, he would make a lot more sense than Charles and Magneto.

Triggered? You must be kidding. You morons and your buzzwords and labels. You couldn't "trigger" me if you tried or even understood what it meant.

@WakandanQueen -

Is there a good reason they must do that? If so, I would pick Nightcrawler.
WakandanQueen
WakandanQueen - 9/19/2024, 11:49 AM
@DocSpock - Well, my personal take would be that there's further layers and dimensionality added to the character if u make him a black man and these can also manifest in his dynamics with other characters, especially Storm. Not saying any of that is necessary in order to make an X-Men film I'd be interested in. Guess it's similar to making this take of Charles and Magneto past lovers... a very common reading, but they are still compelling as just "frenemies".

@WakandanQueen -

Yeah, the Prof/Magneto as gay lovers is the most pathetic pandering to a small but incredibly noisy minority. And These Hollywood weirdos just love to shove it down everyone's throats.

Need to explore the early years and adventures of Hal before skipping to his later years. No reason why Hal cant have gotten the ring earlier but still be fairly young by the time John gets his with Hal still having much more experience over him.
TrentCrimm

@hue66 -

As a DC fan this is what frustrates me most a out everything we've gotten so far.

Everyone wants to skip ahead, Snyder did it with his Batman, Gunn is doing it with his Batman, Reeves Batman is steering clear of any fantasy and keeping it grounded, and now Lanterns is skipping over all of Hals stuff.

I'm legitimately envious of Marvel fans and how they've gotten most of their characters brought to life, DC fans have been neglected and gotten crap for the most part.

@hue66 - Yeah, I wouldn't mind a flash back or two...any excuse to squeeze in the other lanterns and Sinestro.
Baf
Baf - 9/19/2024, 10:26 AM
@TrentCrimm - I am a Hal fan too, but I can't deny that most people who know Green Lantern only know the animated version. For that reason, I can forgive Gunn. Hal got his origin story. It didn't work. That's tough to swallow but true. I can only hope Hal's history is honored in Lanterns.
As for Marvel, there are MANY changes made to those beloved characters too. However, the magic of Disney marketing has satiated the outrage for not honoring true-to-character representations.
lazlodaytona
lazlodaytona - 9/19/2024, 10:48 AM
@hue66 - I agree. It's like they're rushing the Lanterns into the DCU too early with Guy and Hal being older and already experienced. I'd sure like to see how Hal began in this new universe and his tutelage under Sinestro. Maybe we'll get some flash backs in the Lanterns' series, but I still would like to see either a full-on movie or series about Hal's beginning.

@Baf -

Marvel skipped over and rerwrote history as well though…

- fury losing his eye to a cat
- skipping demon in a bottle with iron man
- hulk has a son already
- no uncle Ben
- blade is 60
- scarlet witch is irredeemable
- Bucky was passed over as Cap
- hank and Janet pym were already old and retired
- iron man and Bruce banner made ultron
- quicksilver dead in first appearance

And these are just off the top of my head, dude.

@NonPlayerC - Yes for Storm, ok for John although not a must...I admit I'd prefer a little darker in this case though, but that's subjective. Seems like the budget as far as casting is going to Hal thus far though.

do not like that they are switching Hal and John's personalities for this show... seems dumb to me... but maybe itll work as Hal is an old wily veteran and John is the young eager pup so to speak... idk, we'll see
NonPlayerC
NonPlayerC - 9/19/2024, 10:04 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - yeah that’s the main thing for me is that they do seem to be switching their personalities. I get that Hal is probably gonna turn into parallax but he didn’t slowly become angry, it was one major trauma that changed him when his home and loved ones were destroyed. Hope I’m wrong as this is what I’m excited for most but seems they may be going the fox men route and changing personalities to suit their story

Pretty good actor but is too short for John Steward.

Saw him recently in the miniseries "Genius MLK/X" where he played Dr. King Jr. Solid performance. But I think Aaron Pierre, who in that same series played Malcolm X which was just as stellar, is a better choice for Steward.
