"Why Is Gamora?" And More AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Questions You Didn't Know You Had Answered By The Russos

Did Spider-Man know death was coming for him? Why did everyone's clothes disappear too? Oh, and perhaps most importantly, WHY IS GAMORA? Here, the Russos answer some big Infinity War questions.

Avengers: Infinity War is poised to pass the $2 billion mark at the worldwide box office any week now and to call the movie a rousing success would be an understatement. While we've been lucky enough to have a lot of unanswered questions addressed since its release, there are still a lot which have yet to be answered. However, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have now weighed in on some of the biggest.

A few are a little silly but you may be surprised at just how satisfying it is to get answers to these, especially as they're the sort of queries you've probably been wondering about without even realising.

For example, why wasn't Spider-Man's iron costume left behind when he turned to dust and was Groot's last word really as heartbreaking as "Dad?" You'll find answers to that and more here so all you guys need to do is click on the "View List" button below to check all of these out in one sitting.

What Was The Deal With Captain America's Cell Phone Number?

Many fans have attempted dialling Captain America's cell phone number after it was clearly displayed in Avengers: Infinity War but nothing happens and so it seems almost pointless to have even put it on the big screen. However, it turns out there was actually a very good reason for it not working. "We actually had intended to create a fake voicemail from Steve Rogers," Joe Russo confirms. "For the people that left the theater and called that number, they would get a voicemail from Steve Rogers."

"And that number was the actual number that we were going to use. We were sort of given that number," Anthony Russo adds. "We had it all ready to go, but legal took that away from us." They don't elaborate but perhaps Disney didn't want complaints about unexpected cell phone charges.

Was Groot's Last Word Really "Dad"?

James Gunn was an executive producer on Avengers: Infinity War and consulted on how the Guardians of the Galaxy should be handled here. He's since revealed on social media that Groot's last words to Rocket when he started turning to dust were "Dad?" a heartbreaking revelation which shocked fans.

However, were his comments accurate or was that just an opinion so to speak? Asked specifically if "Dad?" was in the script, Anthony confirmed: "It was, and it was ‘dad.'" So, there you have it, all those tears you've been spilling about the sentient tree's heartbreaking demise were definitely justified.

Did Spider-Man Know His Death Was Coming?

The vast majority of heroes who died in Avengers: Infinity War were able to hold on for pretty much no time at all before turning into dust but that wasn't the case for Spider-Man. Instead, he managed to hang on long enough to say goodbye to Tony Stark and it definitely appeared as if he was somehow resisting what Thanos had done. As it turns out, Peter Parker actually did know death was coming.

How? Well, it turns out that his Spider-Sense warned him about what was happening and that's how he was almost able to prepare for the inevitable. "That’s correct," Joe says when asked to confirm if that was the case. "He was aware of something." It's previously been said that his powers helped too.

Why Is Gamora?

One of Avengers: Infinity War's funniest lines comes when Drax asks, "Why is Gamora?" While the Guardian often doesn't make sense, was he getting a little philosophical there and asking a question that really matters? Nope. "I don’t know if there is an answer in Drax’s twisted brain," Joe laughs. Anthony went on to add: "No, sometimes [you] just wonder, has he made a connection there."

"Remember, this is a man who thinks he can stand so incredibly still that he’s invisible," Joe concludes, making it clear that we probably shouldn't look into Drax's dialogue in the film too deeply.

Why Did Everyone's Clothes Disappear Too?

You know what, this is actually a very good question! Why would people's clothes vanish with them when they were snapped out of existence by Thanos? While it definitely would have been strange seeing piles of clothes left everywhere, that would probably make a little more sense. Then again, when all of these characters inevitably return in Avengers 4 next year, they would all have to be naked!

Joe explains that it all boils down to their clothes being  "part of their identity" and Anthony elaborated on that by explaining that, "Whatever was elemental to somebody’s presence went with them." If that's the case, why didn't Nick Fury's cosmic pager vanish too? Well, that wouldn't have made a great after-credits scene and this is one of those things it's best not to think about too much.

How Much Was The Movie Inspired By The Leftovers?

The similarities between Avengers: Infinity War and The Leftovers are apparent and we'll no doubt see even more of that in Avengers 4 when Earth's Mightiest Heroes are forced to deal with the fallout of Thanos' snap. Asked if casting Carrie Coon was a deliberate way to connect the two tales, Joe said that her playing Proxima Midnight was because "she’s one of the best actresses working today."

He then went on to point out that it's actually far more likely that The Leftovers was inspired by Jim Starlin's Infinity Gauntlet, the same comic
book which this movie is obviously based on. "It’s just a cyclical loop there. But we’re just drawing from the original source material." That makes a lot of sense when you think about it but the concept of some sort of biblical exodus isn't a new one!

Is Drax Dead Or Simply Standing Still?

Okay, this is admittedly a bit of a p*** take but the interview asks the Russos if Drax actually died at the end of Avengers: Infinity War or if he was just standing still and thereby invisible! "That’s a spoiler," joked Joe before Anthony added with a laugh: "That’s to be decided. All we know is what we can gather from the film. Anything more than that can potentially be addressed down the line."

Is Star-Lord Really To Blame?

Since Avengers: Infinity War was released, many fans have blamed Star-Lord for Thanos being able to hold off Earth's Mightiest Heroes and ultimately wipe out half of the universe with a snap of his fingers. Asked if Peter Quill really should be held responsible, Anthony was quick to counter that argument.

"Thor also let his emotions get the better of him. Thor could’ve killed Thanos more quickly than he tried to with the ax. He showed up, and he took a moment — because of his anger, because of his motivation — to tell Thanos that he told him he would die ... and finish him off in a very deliberate way. Thor sort of got lost in his emotions in a similar way as Star-Lord and could also have been responsible for Thanos."

"They make very human choices," Joe added. "I think if we learn anything from narrative is to put yourself inside the POV of someone — or the character itself — you should be able to empathize with them, understand the choices that they make." It's a valid point, so leave Star-Lord alone!

Is Stormbreaker's Handle Another Groot?

In Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket retreived a sliver of Groot wood and essentially grew a whole new version of his best friend. Now that the sentient tree has given one of his arms to Thor as the handle of Strombreaker, does that mean the axe will take on a life of its own somewhere down the line?

"I don’t know if every piece of him that detaches ... can grow a future version of him, but who’s to say? That’s an interesting question," Joe ponders, making it clear that while it's a novel idea, we probably won't see the God of Thunder and his new hammer having a chat in Avengers 4 next year.

What is the word that starts with the in ''this is admittedly a bit of a p***''? I seriously cannot think of any word that has to be censored that fits the sentence.

@urnotaslave23 - Correct. It's more of a common Australian/UK phrase.

@urnotaslave23 - But they only used three *'s. In terms of censoring that tells us that there are only 3 letters there. They should have done, "p*** take". That would have conveyed that 1000% better.

@Origame - That's what is there, "p*** take". What is there not to understand, there are 3 stars for the ISS in PISS.
