Deadline reports that Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scribe Michael Waldron is set to pen the screenplay for Avengers: Secret Wars.
While the title has been used for two very different event stories by Marvel Comics, the recent focus on the Multiverse and Kang the Conqueror's expanding MCU role points to it borrowing heavily from Jonathan Hickman's story. That featured heaps of Multiversal chaos, so Waldron's involvement makes perfect sense.
After all, he introduced Kang ("He Who Remains") in Loki and later embraced the concept of the Multiverse in the Doctor Strange sequel.
The trade adds that with Jeff Loveness (Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania) tapped to write Avengers: The Kang Dynasty for director Destin Daniel Cretton, both movies are starting to take shape. Insiders reveal that Avengers: Secret Wars will have its own director, though all parties are likely to be in touch to coordinate Marvel Studios' wider plans.
Apparently, meetings for the job of Avengers: Secret Wars' writer took place last month. While a number of scribes met with Marvel Studios, Waldron was always the frontrunner as the studio has a lot of faith in him.
We don't have specific plot details for either movie at this stage, though both are quickly beginning to take shape. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler is rumoured to be the frontrunner to take the helm of this final chapter in Phase 6 and The Multiverse Saga, though nothing has been confirmed yet. We're expecting an update soon, though.
What we do know is that these will be the first Avengers movies since 2019's Avengers: Endgame, so the pressure is on Marvel Studios to get them right and deliver a true spectacle.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty arrives in theaters on May 2, 2025, while Avengers: Secret Wars is set to follow on November 7, that same year.
