Hawksblueyes: The AVENGERS Editorial/Review‏

I may be one of the last to see The Avengers but I have some things I wanted to share about the film, not as a critic but as a fan. MINOR SPOILERS!

Review Opinion

It's been quite a while since my last Editorial/Review as many other things have firmly secured themselves between being the regular contributor I was and simply checking in when I get a free moment. However, anyone familiar with anything I have had to say over the years, probably remembers one simple truth....I am one of the most outspoken Avengers fans on this site. I can honestly say that I have been reading The Avengers longer than most of you have been alive. So, I felt compelled to wake up early this morning and let the CBM world know how I felt about seeing The Avengers film, after waiting 35 years to see these heroes on screen.....

"Like a kid again"

From beginning to end, this film not only didn't disappoint, but surpassed all expectations. The scope of the film was amazing. This movie never bothered to "ground itself" in reality, largely due to the fact that Marvel has gone out of their way in their five previous films to stretch our version of "reality" into the extremely, expanded version that exists within the "Marvel Cinematic Universe." They succeeded. It feels perfectly natural while watching The Avengers to see an aircraft carrier suddenly rise from the water to reveal itself as a Hellicarrier. It feels perfectly natural for an Asgardian God of Thunder to land on the wing of a Quinjet in order to retrieve his brother from the custody of three other "Superheroes." It feels perfectly natural to glance around a packed theater on a Friday afternoon (at a time when people should be working or in school) and see that you're not the only one "geeking out." This movie offers no apologies.

After watching previous super team films like the X-Men, (who were transformed into matching leather, seldom displaying their power, waiting for Wolverine to save the day caricatures of themselves,) and The Fantastic Four (which I won't even get into,) I was certain there would be changes made in The Avengers that I would simply have to accept as a fan. I was wrong. BUT, it was the little things that brought the team to life for this longtime fan. Little things certainly gelled this movie together, like Sam Jackson not caring about and then disobeying orders, just like the classic Nick Fury has done so many times in the comics. Thor gives us a glimpse of that "this is going to be fun" smile when he realizes that there will be no subduing The Hulk without a battle worthy of his power. Finally, after two previous films, Iron Man shows the world that he is more than a self centered, eccentric, moron, who is not only worthy, but deserving of the "hero" title. Iron Man also gets another notch in this category by hanging a great big, whopping A where the name STARK once stood on his gleaming tower in New York.

And finally...after reading The Avengers for so many years, there was one thing that stood out more than any other, which immediately gave me goosebumps (and it was very small in the scheme of things.) In the middle of an epic battle, in the middle of New York City, we see Hawkeye helping injured people out of a wrecked bus. This is a scene that is a regular occurrence in any Avengers comic. My good friend teabag (who is also a diehard Avengers nut) and I were discussing this scene yesterday. I can't tell you how many times I have seen Cap spout orders to whoever was on the team to "help these injured civilians and get them to safety" in the comics, while Thor and Iron Man and the other big guns dealt with the enemy at hand. As I said, it was all the little things.

I was also drastically, overjoyed to see the team steadily drifting out of SHIELDS control towards the end of the film. This team has never been anyone's puppet.

There is one aspect of the film I've noticed other reviewers complain about, that I would like to address. I've heard some say that the Chitauri fail to give the team much of a fight. While I think this is somewhat correct, I believe there is a perfectly good reason for this. They are not meant to. They are meant to show that the team (and therefore Earth) is not to be messed with. It's established relatively early in the movie that there are other "worlds" or "dimensions" out there that even Asgard has no knowledge of. I think the fact that the Chitauri's shear numbers fall drastically short of even being a match for The Avengers is the signal to those "other worlds" that Fury talks so much about, mid-film. The team makes the point that the Tesseract-based weapons would have.

As for the stand out performances by the cast....they were all spot on. Evans, Hemsworth, Downey, Ruffalo, Renner, Johansson, Jackson, Hiddleston and right on down the line. They each expand on the characters introduced in previous films. Joss Whedon deserves more credit than I can even begin to express for his re-writes and directing. He has certainly given us what I consider to be the best comic adaptation to date and I am beyond ecstatic that he chose The Avengers to do it with.

I'm sure there will be many of you reading this that will dismiss my words as another "fan rant" and you may be right. However, I know there had to be at least a few people in that theater with me yesterday who were not "lifelong fans" like myself and it has been almost forever, since I noticed the same "shit eating" grin on so many faces. They all got it. They all enjoyed it. If you haven't seen it yet, I'm sure you will also.

Joss Whedon's The Avengers starring Chris Evans, Cris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Samuel L. Jackson and Tom Hiddleston is IN THEATERS WORLDWIDE RIGHT NOW!.

Hawks: Good review, glad you liked the movie.

You wrote: "I've heard some say that the Chitauri fail to give the team much of a fight. While I think this is somewhat correct, I believe there is a perfectly good reason for this. They are not meant to. They are meant to show that the team (and therefore Earth) is not to be messed with."

You may be right, but this saps any potential suspense from the movie. If the Chetauri are no match for the Avengers, and neither is Loki (as evidenced by how easily the Hulk beat him), then there is no tension, no suspense, and the movie is only eye candy.

Hawks, I think this is a really solid review, if not slightly bias. But I'm okay with that because I share the bias. Totally agree that this is the best comic adaptation to date. Also, great point about the civilian rescues; I'm taking my sister and bro-in-law to see it tonight so I'll watch for it again.

I agree one hunderd and fiddy percentile mothaf*cka!!! Avengers is the greatest movie exp of my life. There was a part (the long shot through the city that showcased all the avengers fighting) where I smiled ear to ear and in disbelief that I was watching a true avengers film. Then I almost spit out my drink when hulk showed thor his "appreciation" for his help. That was classic hulk. I am spreading the word on this movie. Peace

This is what Xmen should have been. Weadon unapologetically embraces the apparent absurdity of the material without insulting it. All of the characters are in their authentic costumes and their respective powers are not toned down in the least bit. Singer thought that putting the Xmen in their costumes would look stupid therefore he chose leather costumes. They toned down the powers of all the Xmen and changed their stories, and placed them in [frick]ed up timelines. All those decisions resulted in a watered down version of the Xmen. Yes, even First Class is a watered down version of the Xmen universe. After watching Avengers, I challenge anyone to go back and watch that movie and not help but feel disappointed. I can only hope that studios view the Avengers as a template of how to do this genre correctly. If your embarrassed of the material, then you should not being taking it on.

@ xXkryptoniteXx: good question re. Hulk. But, I DO think there is a pretty good explanation for this. Natasha is slowly building a relationship with Banner/Hulk throughout the first bit of the film, and there is a natural connection between Banner and Stark. This, in turn, resulted in Hulk FINALLY (though in a very short period of time) trusting others - someone beyond Betty, with whom he shared a similar relationship. His management of the beast is, in part, explained by these new relationships, which allow him to direct his rage toward the alients and (in fantastic fashion) Loki.

I'm not much of a fan of Hulk, but he clearly makes the film a success. Ruffalo is perfect in this role.

GOOD

It was fun from beginning to end and brought out the 12 year old in me!

BAD
This movie had ZERO plot/story, character development didn't exist and dialog was cheesy! It was a bunch of fight scenes all mashed together! Not even close to the best Marvel movie ever.

3 out of 5

xxkryptonitexx...i get your concern bout that, but i think the only reason Banner 'lost' it on board of the hellicarrier was that he kinda got knocked out, so he sorta lost his ability to 'control' the 'other guy' and, thus, just became our ol' buddy, the savage Hulk. he just LOST it.

and at the end, while he's back to his better sense, he's gained his control over the 'other guy' back..so he just changes at his own will and does his thang to the leviathan.

what i was really concerned bout though..is the way the movie started out with that new outer space/dimension character. the way he dresses and speaks...kinda bordering on the comic book/sci-fy cheesiness that i recognized as last year's Green Lantern's biggest problem. even later, when he was in another scene with Loki, and we got a close up of him, i still worry that the non-fan audience would roll their eyes and unjustly dismiss the whole movie based on this.

and once we got the bonus scene...while it kinda got me excited to imagine the possibilities for future avengers sequels, i have to say, i wonder, as well, if the broader audience WOULD take the "other worldly" path/direction that scene had seemed to be taking.

Good explaination. Everyone was caught off guard with that explosion, plus it was Loki's plan in the first place right?

kevberg: Once you see the film you'll see that it is clearly more of a case that Banner isn't fond of the name "Hulk" as if it reminds him that there's a monster he has little control of, lurking inside him. He does use it later.

There is a point in the movie where everyone gets hurt in some way...Thor gets stabbed, hulk nose bleeds, cap gets shot and blown out a window, widow ankle gets crushed,Hawkeye crashes thru window and hurts back, ironman plunges thru serpent and crashes....theses small things made a vulnerable aspect of our powerful heroes and I loved it.....seeing with my 9yr old son n Imax 3d today....miss u complete me!

Yesterday, i saw "The Avengers" recenly. This film is not only spectacular but its an "historic" superhero feature film at its best. This is worth the wait. Hell, this was worth the wait 7 years ago when it was first developed. This is something what has NEVER been done before & Marvel has got there finger on the pulse. In 1998, a minor marvel character featuring a human/vampire hybrid made it way to the big screen. In 2000, a group of mutants evolved into the box office. In 2002, was the year of the Spider.

After Daredevil, Hulk (Ang Lee), The Punisher, Elektra, Man-Thing, Fantastic Four & Ghost Rider, Marvel Studios would start producing its own films and distribute them through Paramount Pictures & the funding will come from a seven-year, $525 million revolving credit facility with Merrill Lynch. The result led to the creation of the "Marvel Cinematic Universe". Sounds cool, right? It was. No, really, It F***in' was. Iron Man made its motion picture debut, The Hulk got rebooted, Thor & Captain America have "FINALLY" got the Big screen treatment. Then came a huge shift in the Marvel universe.... Marvel Entertainment is now owned by Mickey Mouse.

Amazing. Disney let go the Power Rangers franchise & bought Marvel.

But after everything from comics to TV & film Marvel has put out it comes to show just how far they come as a company & knowing the fact that the biggest supporters (including me) are the fans. That is why they CAN NOT Disappoint us. Yeah, we complain about storylines, costumes & special effects, But if they stay true to the comics, the films would have done its justice. But i know deep down, Marvel Studios will always put out films & stay close to the material. So, what i've said earlier, was it worth the wait? Yes. Yes it was "definitely" worth it.

Marvel Studios, the cast & crew of The Avengers did an amazing job & on the Marvel Cinematic Universe & i can't wait to see what comes next.

Now if DC & Warner Bros. get finger out of their asses & step their game up, we would like to see the Justice League into the big screen.

Listen, ima 35 year old comic fan and I've been resting marvel comics for 25 of those. I thought going into this film that if it was as good as Thor (my favorite marvel movie) I'd be very happy. What I saw completely surpassed my expectations in a huge way. I absolutely adored it and am not ashamed to say there was tears in my eyes when they were fighting as a team at the end. It was everything I love about the comics on the screen. To others it may sound as if I'm overreacting, but as someone who has invested a lot of my life in these comics over the years, I couldn't of wished for more. I couldn't find any fault in it, besides I leave that to the other guys on this site who believe they are film critics. Lol.

kevberg: You'll see and understand. Everybody in the film is well aware of who banner is and the danger he represents. Almost everyone in the film is avoiding the term around him (including Banner himself) but it's only to keep him calm and in the case of Banner, because he is ashamed of it. However, there is a team mate who is constantly trying to set him off.
