I woke up at 6 am to leave to see a preview showing of Marvel's The Avengers. Needless to say waking up that early, driving 45 min to the theater, and waiting outside for around 2 hours has never been more worth it.

It's hard to explain The Avengers. It has so much room to fail with the enormous cast, and the largeness of the scale. This movie really came down to three things for me: the acting, the directing, and almost more importantly, the writing.

What this movie did was accomplish something that has never been done before. First of all, it created the first true cinematic universe (not like the loosely related Tarantino universe) this truly brought characters in from four different franchises, and brought them together in a way that was comprehensible to the audience. It makes sense how all these strange characters came together. It's hard to say which character was my favorite, as it probably changed from scene to scene depending on who was on screen at the time. I do know this, the Hulk truly shines. Not only does Ruffalo play an excellent Bruce Banner, he is also the first actor to also truly play the Hulk thanks to motion-capture. His character is the source of a lot of problems, and a lot of humor throughout the film. Hawkeye also is one of the most interesting characters because we know the least amount about him, and haven't seen much of him. He was exciting to watch in action, and I personally think it would be cool to see him in a solo flick. The other characters: Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, and Iron man all get there screen time, with Iron Man very potentially having the most, to know ones surprise. All in all it works however. Each character gets there due diligence, and each keep to the core of their character that we have seen in their solo films. The acting is as good as it has ever been for a Marvel movie.

The directing is not something most people are consciously aware of. But when watching this movie as a whole by the end you recognize the importance of it. The amount of man power, and hours/months spent working on a movie like this is crazy. And yet all this is controlled by one person, it is one persons job to make this vision come alive. They get lots of help from very smart and creative people, yet it is still up to them to make the final decisions. Joss Whedon created a movie that many people believed was not possible to make. The largeness of this film in scale is insane. It is very much Black Hawk Down with superheroes. The final battle scene probably comes in around the halfway mark, maybe 60% through the film. That means that final battle lasted somewhere in the range of 30-40 minutes. And Joss made it all come together in this beautiful masterpiece of a superhero film. What he created is the perfect Avengers movie.

Considering how much work Whedon did directing this movie, we forget that he also did the writing. The story is perfect. It allows each character to shine at times, and also fall back and let others take the spot light. It is a simple plot line, but executed to perfection. When bringing these clashing egos together he truly nails the discorse and confusion of these people trying to work together. They very much want nothing to do with each other. So what is it that can make people band together to form a functional team? How about a traumatic event, that effects every character personally? That is exactly what happens. It is perfect how this even effects the group, and allows them to see what must be done. It is truly a sad scene, but necessary in order to make these egotistical superjocks see what they can be. It is a stellar screenplay, kudos to Whedon once again on this front.

All in all this is a fantastic movie. It is unlike the other Marvel movies yet similar. Each franchise has it's own feel, and this one is no less special. It is hard to imagine that these men pulled this off successfully, but that is exactly what happened. I can't wait to be able to go see it again at midnight on opening weekend. And I know you all can't wait too. It's totally worth it.

Excellent review my friend. You explained very well why you liked it without coming off as fanboyish.

Very excited to see this and am very happy that Avengers is getting very good word of mouth.

This bodes very well for Marvel to bring other characters to screen plus future Avenger flicks.

ok im not trying to troll or anything, im just gonna ask some questions in a way where i can understand how good the film is.

is the film better than iron man 1?

does the film feel like it will break ground and influence future solo hero films and even maybe a jl film?

is it a summer hit or will it have a long legacy?

does it feel like a transformers movie but better?

Nice review! Man, I wish May 4th would hurry up lol

@Alexandre I haven't seen it yet, but from some of the other comments I've read, this is definately the best Marvel film and future CBMs will most likely look to it for influence. Makes me even more excited to see it haha

@esntinelofliberty i liked caps costume in the movie, i didn't think much of it

@alexandre you know i think it could have influence on what these studios decide to do, cinematic universes could become a much more common thing i believe. I like it better then Iron Man 1 personally.

here's a question: after watching this movie, what do you think of all x-men movies AND all spider-man movies???
mstaley3000
mstaley3000 - 4/15/2012, 12:41 AM
Not to be nitpicky but this is only the 1st intentionally shared universe. Universal created the 1st shared universe where the individuals involved had their own solo movies and then had movies that featured multiple characters from these solo movies. Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolf Man, The Mummy, Abbott & Costello all had solo movies and then we got Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man, House of Frankenstein, House of Dracula, and Abott & Costello Meet Frankenstein. There are other movies that all play in the same universe but not strongly related to each other (Star Trek movies).

What Marvel has done is unique and it will be interesting to see how The Avengers will influence the shared movie universe. Will Cap and Thor have a mighty box office boost? Will Marvel be able to create strong spin off movies for characters they introduce in another movie?

@sinister the first two xmen movies were very good in my opinion. they had a great cast, a great tone, and great stories. obviously x3 was below par. just a jumbled movie. I also really really like the first two spiderman movies. again spidey3 tried to do to much and the story got lost within the ever increasing list of pointless characters.
BiZArOh
BiZArOh - 4/15/2012, 1:09 AM
@mstaely First of all Thor was a huge success on many levels. whatever box office boost it receives will be due in part to the avengers, but i believe mostly because people actually enjoyed the first film and grew to love the character. i think the same goes for cap. i think they should be careful of spinoffs. they are running so many franchises now i don't want them to sacrifice quality for quantity. i'd like to see them finish off Norton's line of hulk films with Ruffalo, finish of the franchises they are currently are working on before moving to many new properties. the only exception being hawkeye. he deserves a spinoff in my opinion.

ryanjdrf1992 Can you describe Alan Silvestri's score? Is it more of a traditional symphonic score, with a theme/march like he did for Captain America? Or more of a modern mixture of synth/sound effects? The descriptions I've read tend to be vague and can be subjective. Thanks for a great review and for any info about the score!
BiZArOh
BiZArOh - 4/15/2012, 1:48 AM
@cmeg3 i always like to pay attention to scores, as a music/band geek i always enjoyed that aspect. It was traditional sounding (of the likes of hans zimmer, or john williams) but it had his own flair to it of course. It wasn't the same as Cap but it had the EPICNESS that caps did. It was a really really good score. I'm certainly going to download it.

Great review, man! Although, I have a few questions:

Were there any disappointments for you in the film?

Did Amanda Righetti reprise her role as a SHIELD agent or the rumored Sharon Carter?
BiZArOh
BiZArOh - 4/15/2012, 12:11 PM
@chrismatj I guess the only disappointment is that the movie is really made up of two scenes/sequences that make up about half the film, granted they are awesome scenes lol but their length means that there aren't a lot of others if you know what i mean. I'm referring to the helicarrier scene and the final fight. Both awesome, however their length means some of the cool set up stuff at the beginning had to be cut out or down.

It was a truly remarkable film, it completely surpassed my fanboy expectations. The cinematography, the music, the corny moments that were not corny at all. I think the final battle scene was closer to 25 minutes, but it's so action packed and so masterfully crafted that it tops all the battles in every other marvel studio films combined. Sort of like the end of Transformers DOTM but good and not pointless explosions.

@ryanjdrf1992 - I am not suggesting that either Thor or Cap were less than successful, however, it is clear that the potential audience for those movies was not impressed since IM and IM2 did a much bigger box office. I would expect that the box office of both Thor and Cap will go up for their next movie even if their weren't an Avengers movie in between. Now that their origins are out of the way it allows for more freedom for storytelling. With the Avengers giving them so much more exposure it ought to boost their box office even more.

I would hope they don't rush out movies just to capitalize on the current positive feelings toward comic book movies. However, developing other properties, like, Dr. Strange, would allow them to keep up a schedule of 2 to 4 movies a year. Remember, Marvel is owned by Disney now and it is no burden to make more movies. If they need to they can just stop making John Carter like movies. They can also take their time making each individual movie to insure quality control because they have other movies being released that year. Also, we are getting more movies based on Marvel characters regardless of whether Marvel produces them or not. Hopefully, more Marvel controlled movies will force other studios to keep the quality higher.

Good article!

Actually it got my mouth watering!

The movie is almost here in Australia (starts 26 April) - so not long to go.

It all sounds good - I'm principally a Thor fan but I like Iron Man and Cap too and am comfortable with IM having the most screen time.

As an Aussie sci-fi writer: I’ve written a solid collection of Marvel (espec Thor) fan fiction, why not check it out? http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1276881/David_Scholes

Awesome review @ryanjdrf1992, appreciated!
I have got only one question about something I heard that's bugging me, which is that War Machine doesn't get a mention. If the stakes are so high and so much firepower is needed, why wouldn't Stark get Rhodey in on the action? Its not that I actually want him in it, and it's a small gripe I am willing to gloss over, but I find it hard to suspend my disbelief that they wouldn't use two Iron Men if they could. Any chance you could give your thoughts on how it was handled? Cheers!

BiZArOh - 4/18/2012, 12:24 PM
@connorblaze yea man he's not mentioned. They do get around to mentioning why certain characters don't make an appearance, for instance Jane, but no mention of Rhodey. I didn't mind that he wasn't mentioned, and I was glad he wasn't in it, most likely because he was never a really major member of The Avengers, but either way he would have made it too much.
