AVATAR Director James Cameron Responds To Critics: "Let Me See Your 3-Out-Of-The-4-Highest-Grossing Films"

The Terminator director James Cameron has hit back at those who complain about the dialogue in his movies, reminding his critics that he's delivered three of the biggest box office hits in history...

James Cameron will almost certainly be remembered as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Aliens, and Titanic are among his most beloved directing efforts and then there's...Avatar

While the 2009 movie was a jaw-dropping technical achievement, it drew criticism for what some felt was a so-so story and "cringeworthy" dialogue which his blockbusters have often come under fire for over the decades.

Talking to Empire Online about the 40th anniversary of The Terminator, Cameron said, "I don’t think of it as some Holy Grail, that’s for sure. I look at it now and there are parts of it that are pretty cringe-worthy, and parts of it that are like, 'Yeah, we did pretty well for the resources we had available.'"

He added, "I don’t cringe on any of the dialogue, but I have a lower cringe factor than, apparently, a lot of people do around the dialogue that I write. You know what? Let me see your three-out-of-the-four-highest-grossing films - then we’ll talk about dialogue effectiveness."

Cameron is referring to Avatar ($2.9 billion), Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion), and Titanic ($2.2 billion). Ultimately, he's not wrong; "cringe" dialogue or not, moviegoers have embraced his movies and made them some of the biggest hits in history.

Of course, this isn't the first time the filmmaker has hit back at his critics. In 2022, he lashed out at those complaining about Avatar: The Way of Water's mammoth three-hour runtime.

"I don’t want anybody whining about length when they sit and binge-watch [television] for eight hours," he said at the time. "I can almost write this part of the review. 'The agonizingly long three-hour movie...' It’s like, give me a f*cking break. I’ve watched my kids sit and do five one-hour episodes in a row. Here’s the big social paradigm shift that has to happen: it’s okay to get up and go pee."

"The trolls will have it that nobody gives a shit and they can’t remember the characters’ names or one damn thing that happened in the movie," Cameron said of Avatar's biggest haters. "Then they see the movie again and go, ‘Oh, okay, excuse me, let me just shut the [frick] up right now.’ So I’m not worried about that."

Love or hate Avatar, those movies are dominating this stage of Cameron's career and Avatar: Fire and Ash is up next on December 19, 2025.

It’s all subjective imo.

The fact that a lot of people see his movies is evidence that they play to the lowest common denominator. His work is fun and sometimes a little beyond just being amusement, but not by much. And his dialog is pretty crappy

@ProfessorWhy - Terminator/T2, Titanic and Avatar are not crap films, he does not play to the lowest common denominator at all. Outside this series of world building he is doing each of these is significant with social commentary and unique characters. I dont like Avatar the way others do, but it was a film about protecting nature and the problems of corporations and the military industrial complex when you break it down to the basic elements.

I never heard of avatar, nobody did when it came out, but it was massive somehow - i never even saw it until dvd/cable as i didnt understand the hype for the film.

Dude makes good films, you might just be a snob.

I'm more annoyed at all the DNR this clown uses for his new 4k restorations. Your old movies were shot on film, DEAL WITH IT. He wants everything to look like Avatar now. Luckily there are 35mm scans of True Lies, Titanic and his Terminator movies. If you look hard enough or find the people on Twitter you'll see them. I'm not saying where because it's my secret tramplone lol

He's not wrong
The avatar hate was always an interesting case study into modern human psyche. Tbe movie is inoffensive as phuck. It's a simple story that's beautiful to watch, and it's sequel added the element of family to the plot. There's nothing really to hate. But yet it's hated. Why? Because it made so much money
And the hate strongly hints that people hate to see something do good. Call it jealousy. Call it crabs in a barrel trying to reach the top. It's a clear weakness we have as a species. We do better rooting each other on rather than pulling each other down

@Vigor - agreed

I haven’t watched the first Avatar in awhile and I remember just not really ultimately connecting to the characters strongly or at all even though it was and is still a visual & technical achievement

Hence why I haven’t seen the sequel yet either but might do so in the future.

Very few movies are truly offensive and this franchise (regardless of people’s feelings on them) isn’t one of them.

@TheVisionary25 - I found the 2nd one to be vastly superior to the first. Much more heart. And since I was a new father when it came out, the family themes hit embarrassingly closer than they should have lol 😢

I don’t hate the Avatar franchise, but I don’t find it terribly interesting, either. How many conversations have you had where someone says “Avatar was my favorite movie of all time…” or even “man, I fricking love those Avatar movies so much”?
Vigor
Vigor - 9/21/2024, 12:05 PM
@FrankenDad - I really enjoyed the 2nd and can't wait to see the third. Seeing it in the biggest screen possible and best sound and 3d is such a delight. Other movies face into obscurity but the effort that goes into avatar bleeds into my memory banks.

There were some scenes in avatar 2 that reminded me of the first time I played a 3d game on Sega Genesis or Saturn. Like wow, now THESE are graphics!

Dude has a huge ego, and doesn’t seem like the humblest person , but for some reason his movies just appeal to everyone. Maybe the Avatar movies don’t incite long lasting conversation and are just technical marvels , but peeople go see them, go figure ?

I guess some people truly can have it all no matter the quality of your character.
He’s a very successful billionaire director , has had a family and is quite healthy for his age.

That’s amazing

The Avatar movies are good. Their biggest flaw is that the story is derivative, but they are objectively well made.

Cameron can be a dick but that’s a pretty boss response , not gonna lie lol.

I don’t remember having any particular issue with Cameron’s dialogue from the work of his I’ve seen but perhaps my cringe factor is different then others aswell when it comes to dialogue.

Anyway , most directors would die to have one iconic film so it’s crazy to see that Cameron atleast has 4-5.

LMAO that's not a good argument if anything this hurts his case. Most popular doesn't mean good if anything it's usually for the dumb masses who eat fluff up. Look at tv shows Big Bang Theory, HIMYM, Friends are some of the most popular most watched shows but all of them ain't good. Then you have Always Sunny, Arrested Development, Community which are fqr FAR superior but only get a fraction of the views. Because they don't dumb it down.

He’s just adessing the trolls and pseudo movie connaisseur on this and many site who feel nobody can enjoy a movie they don’t avatars we’re both great movies in my book and that’s what’s important, people need to watch stuff based on what they like and not the opinion of others who share negativity to generate traffic on their site, feed or whatever media they use to spread their hate who made successful movies among these experts? Anyone of course not they’d have to get out of the basement 😂

The Avatar, Transformers, and F&F movies have made many billions.

They have lots of beautiful visuals, fights, spectacular crashes/explosions, FX, etc. They all at time deserve awards for special effects & cinematography.

They are also mostly very stupid movies. But they clearly give the audience what they want, so we'll certainly keep seeing them.

Imagine if they did all that coupled with the art, craft, and soul of The Godfather and Braveheart.

Yeah, right...

The first Avatar movie didn't resonate with me, so I skipped the second. But he's absolutely right—everybody is a movie critic these days. Like, shut the f**k up; you took one film studies class, and now you're a snob.

Even the guy above me is talking about the masses liking dumb stuff, and I find that type of talk pretty dumb. Everyone feels like they're so above others. Newsflash: movies started off as escapism during economic hardships to help people escape daily stress, so excuse people for wanting to enjoy a movie rather than pay $18 to sit through "good dialogue," which has no consensus parameters.

I watched Royal Hotel, which critics loved, and that shit was ass, but I digress. Even though you come off as an arrogant douche at times, keep making your movies, Cameron. You're making people happy in a time when many are depressed—even if it's only for 3 hours.😊

To those of you that are Titantic (1997) fans, I highly recommend you watch "A Night To Remember" (1958), viewable now to Amazon Prime subscribers in the US. A UK-made film about Titantic, it's very well done, great attention to detail, and was clearly Cameron's template for the 1997 film. I had never seen it (or heard of it, for that matter) until last week.
