THANOS The Main Villain In AVENGERS 3? How About NO!

THANOS The Main Villain In AVENGERS 3? How About NO!

Why should Thanos be in Avengers 3? This is what I ask. Why does everyone just assume this is how it should be? Marvel has a plan, but as a huge Thanos fan I sure hope they don't include him in the third Avengers movie! Why? Make the jump to find out!

Everyone seems to want Thanos for Avengers 3. And me as a HUGE Thanos fan just starts scratching my head and asking why? Now you are probably wondering why would you be against Thanos being in the 3rd Avengers movie?

Here are my reasons:

1. THANOS IS WAY TOO BIG FOR AN AVENGERS MOVIE! (nuff said)

2. Thanos will need more development. The problem is, people think he's just a "villain" and I think fans of the character will agree he's much more than that.

He's a character that has his own reasons and his own motives for what he does. And I'd like the general audiance to understand this. That is half the reason of him having the Infinity Gauntlet. It shouldn't be, "Oh this bad guy gets to be really powerful and it takes a massive team of heroes to stop him."

Instead it should be, "Thanos gets ultimate power but true love and happiness are not bought with being all powerful."

3. If there is an Infinity Gauntlet film Thanos needs to be the main character with the others appearing as supporting characters. This is why it can't be an "Avengers" movie.

4. The Marvel Universe needs to do a few more things before going up against Thanos. You see how I said "Marvel Universe" instead of "Avengers", this is how it should be shown. To show Thanos is a bigger threat than the "Avengers" can handle. This should be an EVENT MOVIE.

5. Thanos needs his own solo movie. Wouldn't you go to a movie where Thanos finally gets tired of using thralls to do his work and takes all the stones for himself? Plus this could offer flashbacks to his origin and or childhood. He has a very interesting, albeit twisted life and it would be a shame for the general audience to miss such an amazing character's origin.

6. It would do something DIFFERENT! The "superhero" genre would have a truly different story that would actually go into the villain's point of view a bit. Sure, everyone would agree Thanos needs to be stopped but it still makes for a great story of why he is, who he is.

7. The universe needs to grow a bit. Plus we need to have more time with the heroic characters, so when Thanos kills half of the universe, the stakes are felt.

8. Don't rush! Let the story lay out naturally. There are plenty of villains who could pop up in Avengers 3. Kang, Red Skull, a new version of Masters of Evil, etc. They could even do an adaption of World of War Hulk! I mean, there are literally 100's of stories they could pull from for Avengers 3.

9. I know a lot of people will say, "You can't keep building up to this big bad guy without paying him off sometime." Well, having Thanos be the bad guy in the film doesn't mean he has to have the Gauntlet. Thanos is powerful in his own right without the Gauntlet and would be easily enough of a threat for a Guardians Of The Galaxy movie or an Avengers movie. So he could actually be a bad guy in a movie soon, just not with the Gauntlet.

10. He is my favorite villain. And I want him to be recognized as a Marvel CHARACTER not just a Marvel villain.

Do you agree with me? Please leave a comment below and make sure to SMASH the RED GLOVE so that we can get this on the main! Thanks!

i agree 100%, although when everyone does finally duke it out with the mad titan it will probably be an avengers film because it being an avengers film would bring in more money. i want phase 4 to be one big event with the cosmic universe reacting to thanos's acquisition of a infinity stone. i wish i was in charge of marvel because what im imagining in my head is awesome.

The nature of the business pretty much means he will be antagonist for Avengers 3. You should just come to terms with that.
kinghulk

i want to see cosmic chaos as thanos subjugates races, destroys planet all for the infinity gauntlet so that he can show his love for death. i would start phase 4 with a thanos origin story done like thanos rising in flashbacks which ends with thanos getting his hands on his 1st infinity stone. the follow it up with a guardians, nova, captain marvel and inhumans film where everything starts to inter connect. for example nova appearing in captain marvel, the kree appearing in inhumans and the avengers joining the battle.

i also though about having the skrulls be like they are at the start of infinity, broken in loads of diffrent tribes fighting each other for power that are united by thanos. then after thanos is defeated they have emerged as a entirely new threat separate of thanos.

Thanos should definitely be the main villain in an Avengers movie, especially in the MCU, he will fit perfectly going up against the Avengers and the characters that Marvel owns and has the rights for.

Hopefully GOTG, Dr Strange, Ant-Man, and more are included in the Thanos vs Avengers movie too, it will be insane
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 9/10/2014, 2:31 PM
Add inhumans to that list too, I hope they show up in the MCU and we get some announcements soon

@kinghulk Thanks! Agree completely.

yossarian True, but I can hope that they won't do that because if they did do that it wouldn't only butcher the character but also make other great stories and films impossible. They should almost try to hold off as long as they can so that they can introduce more aspects of the character.

Honestly I don't mind Thanos being a villain in one of the movies, just not with the Infinity Gauntlet.

It's not time for the Infinity Gauntlet yet. But having Thanos being a villain would be great! People think that he gets the Gauntlet and that's all he does and that's all that makes him interesting. I want to prove those people wrong.

@KingHulk: Phase Four I believe will be a mix of cosmic, supernatural with maybe a Black Panther sequel thrown in there or something. I don't know.

As far as this article goes, it's good. But, Thanos is probably going to get the Gauntlet in Avengers 3. All they have to do is introduce two or three stones. I believe Adam Warlock to be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 so, he could provide some more details on Thanos so, we get a gist of what he's about.
kinghulk
kinghulk - 9/10/2014, 2:40 PM
personally i would like to see the avengers fight the kree in avengers 3. they can do what they tried to do in earth's mightiest heroes. it would be a good way to introduce carol and mar-vell to the avengers (hopefully they would have already had a film) and it opens up the cosmos to the avengers. and it could end with Mar vell going home to explain his actions only to have the supreme intelligence inform him of a new much bigger threat, Thanos.
sikwon
sikwon - 9/10/2014, 2:45 PM
He's not going to get the Gauntlet yet. We haven't even seen all the stones. Marvel is going to play this out. They have the time, $$, resources and brand recognition to pace it slowly. If they just released a movie titled Infinity people would see it. Guardians proved that Marvel can make a movie with no Avengers connections and still be massively successful. By the time Thanos is ready for his big screen full on debut the audience will be salivating. I'm with you, take your time, build it up. I don't know that I want a Thanos solo movie, perhaps him and say Adam Warlock splitting a movie screen/story time. Just as long as they don't rush it.

i always wanted the masters of evil for the avengers 3,thanos needs his own movie to collect the gems or stones i.e thanos quest.

then have an infinity gauntlet trilogy in the epic style of lord of the rings featuring all the marvel studios heroes & villains going up against thanos & the black order.

I expect Marvel would want to put it out soon, in case they can't get Downey Jr, Evans, Hemsworth, and the otherS back for it. I hate when people say they want Cap to die in Captain America 3, because you need to have him lead the Avengers into battle with Thanos, especially since Tony will be hogging the spotlight in Avengers 2. Cap needs his chance to prove he is the best leader there is, and that the whole "he's a strong man on the inside" theme from The First Avenger is still true. I'm getting a tiny bit off topic, but it all connects to their battle with Thanos. Avengers, the Guardians, possibly a team up between all the nine-realms, the Nova Corps, the Inhumans if Marvel moves forward with their movie, Thanos can't be depowered, and I think that all the work Marvel is putting into setting Thanos up is an implication that they have a huge plan to make Avengers 3 the best movie of all time.
EdgyOutsider
EdgyOutsider - 9/10/2014, 2:59 PM
@marvel72: Problem with Masters of Evil for Avengers 3 is that it makes no sense.

Also in general, Thanos doesn't NEED a movie. We don't NEED any movie. Would it help if we got some important background on Thanos? Yes but, I don't see getting that until Guardians of the Galaxy. You can go from Thanos to a smaller scale villain and still have the stakes be there, even if Thanos gets the gauntlet and all six stones by or in Avengers 3. I mean shit, I'm still pulling for Taskmaster to appear in either Cap 3 or in one of the Avengers sequels. The stones have been such an important part of each Phase, they can't just stop. It has to have a payoff and that's in Avengers 3. It's all leading into this big event film.

superotherside
superotherside - 9/10/2014, 4:20 PM
@DrDoom Mostly it's to differentiate people from thinking he's an ordinary villain. All I'm saying is he needs as much as much time spent building up his character as any heroic character has. Like Cap, Iron Man, Thor all got their own movies Thanos needs the same amount of time to build on his character and get the audience to know and understand him better. Thus he needs his own movie.

Long time reader and admirer of the insights the CBM community has to offer us fans. This is also my first post. So let me begin by simply saying I love both perspectives @superotherside and @GliderMan had to offer and as a fan I would be good with either one.

From strictly a business perspective I would have to say @GliderMan makes a very plausible and valid point. Its all about what sells and unfortunately Thanos hasn't been given the necessary character development to carry a tent pole himself...at least not yet. Nevertheless, having the Titan take the mantle as the main protagonist in A3 would still be epic.

This is a great time to be a comic book fan across the board no matter what your preference. I am just glad too be around to enjoy in all the festivities.

I agree! After 3 avengers movies and 3 guardians flicks we should get a two part Marvel's The Infinity Wars or something along those lines. The movie equivalent of the comic cross over events. You get Guardians, Avengers, Defenders, cameos from actors we thought would be done like RDJ.

@superotherisde Thank you! finally someone who is on the same page as me!
What would be awesome is if Thanos, instead of wanting the infinity stones right away, is strategically allowing other people to possess the stones, and then like you said he is powerful even without the stones, korath confirmed this in gotg. So when the time comes in the final battle of the final battle (after all the other heroes have faced him down and been pimped slapped across the cosmos, after the emodiments of the universe challenge him) he will have 6 infinity stones possessed by 6 people opposing him and he will show death how much he loves her, they will fall to his power.
superotherside
superotherside - 9/10/2014, 9:33 PM
@GliderMan Have you read Thanos Quest specifically? Read that then come back and talk to me.

He doesn't have to be behind the curtain. He just doesn't need to get the Infinity Gauntlet yet. Part of the reason to have the whole Infinity Gauntlet story is not that someone gets the Gauntlet it's that he gets it and how he gets it and who he is. There is no character progression like I want it if he's just a big bad that wants power "because". As much as I liked Ronan in GOTG, they didn't go into why he was doing what he was doing. If they do that with Thanos, it may be a good film but it will be an opportunity wasted!

Your point that Thanos isn't "known" isn't a valid point. Marvel already proved that GOTG wasn't known and still made a ton of money. People have been crying for a Loki movie, so yeah having an "evil" character have a film isn't impossible. Plus he wouldn't be doing anything where it would be like, "Man that guys the villain so it's unbearable to watch him as the main character, it would be him collecting the gems from other "bad guys". Something the audience would go along with." So yeah, no point here. Moving on.

Having Thanos just pop in other movies is okay as long as it's the right movie. I would love it if Thanos does pop up in a movie and gets to be a fan favorite and then gets clamoring for a solo movie. This would be great. That's what I'd do first. Introduce him and give him an arc as one of the main characters, then once he got popular give him a solo movie. GOTG weren't even popular and yet they have already done better than the first Iron Man! Which is a much more popular character. I honestly think if Marvel does a film most will go see it now. No matter what it is. GOTG proved that.

Since the rest of your points are just talking about how hard stuff is to balance let me give you a view of my plan.

After Age of Ultron I'd announce Avengers 3 wasn't going to be with Thanos. So people would get used to the idea. (Most have gotten used to Stark creating Ultron instead of Pym.)

Give Thanos at least a supporting role in GOTG 2.

Do an Inhumans movie and Nova.

Other Avengers movies. (Ms. Marvel, Black Panher, etc.)

Then I'd use someone else for Avengers 3 as the villain. I'd like to do something with the time gem so possibly Kang?

Then after Avengers 3 tease a bigger villain.

Finally after everyone has tossed around these stones. From one to another person everyone cheating everyone to get them then one does.

This would be the story of a Thanos movie. How he outsmarts each of these powerful individuals.

Then finally have a two part film of The Infinity Gauntlet.

Please don't tell me that a two part film wouldn't work. People may complain about the LOTR/Hobbit Trilogy but everyone went to see them despite they split it up all the time.

My movie list:

2015

May 1: The Avengers: Age of Ultron

July 17: Ant-Man

2016

May 6: Captain America 3

July 8: Doctor Strange

2017

May 5: Black Panther

July 27: Guardians Of The Galaxy 2

November 3: Black Widow

2018

July 6: Inhumans

November 2: Nova

2019

May 3: Avengers 3

2020
Thanos Of Titian

2021
The Infinity Gauntlet Part 1
The Infinity Gauntlet Part 2

Part 1 would be the heroes and villains getting together, even fighting each other to go take on Thanos while it would also tell the story of Thanos contemplating his new found power. This would make it very interesting movie in itself. Plus all those too many characters? Well, Thanos would kill off half the universe. So... there wouldn't be as many characters as you think... Just use the main ones. I'd use:

Captain America
Iron Man
Thor
Black Bolt
Star Lord
Rocket
Drax
Gamora
Nova
Scarlet Witch
Vision
Hulk
Adam Warlock

And have the rest of the characters "killed" for Death. This would get rid of the other characters that would hamper the story.

Part 2 would be the grand final Thanos takes on the entire universe.

The biggest problem is that everyone expects Thanos to be the big bad in Avengers 2. Story telling isn't doing what people expect. Plus this way it gets them to have more movies. I mean these movies aren't going to be unsuccessful. Plus it's not really delaying it that much longer than it was in the first place. I'm delaying it 2 years more. That's it. Just so that we can build up to Thanos in the right way.

Honestly if Thanos is in Avengers 3 I think it may be more crowded than my plan!

Imagine everyone saying that Guardians and Avengers will be in the same movie with Thanos as the main villain? Sounds too crowded to me. This is why the event movie would be there to deal with all the main characters of each franchise have them finally agree to team up (everyone wants them to fight), then have them take down the bad guy.

That is how it should be done. And if it isn't, I'll hope for the best but I still think they'll be missing great opportunities here.

I'll mention all those on my article just so that they also hear what I had to say:

@Insomnia
@kinghulk
@DrKinsolving
@marvel72
@DrDoom
@TheAbaryMan369
@EdgyOutsider
@gamecreatorjj
@ScottMontgomery
@Knowhere
@homodrome

But to wrap this up with another thought... I'll ask you a question.

Who needs a movie?

Technically no one.

Did Green Lantern need a movie? Some might say yes, but because of the wrong direction it failed. So did it need a movie in the audience's eyes? No.

Did Guardians Of The Galaxy need a movie? Most would say yes, but that's because it went in a new direction and everyone loved it. So yes the audience would agree it needed a movie.

Two similar movies one that is based off a more popular character which had a bigger fan base but failed because of the wrong direction. Characters don't need movies. Story tellers do. The audience does. It doesn't matter what character you have, it's how you tell their story.

And that is how any story becomes successful or unlucky.

So don't judge that this character doesn't need a story because he's not "big enough". It's not what you are selling it's how you sell it.

And if Marvel did this, it would work.

Vortigar
Vortigar - 9/11/2014, 2:51 AM
The Avengers seems to mean something else in the movies as it does in the comics. The definition is still afloat a bit. The future movies will tell.

The timeline actually fits for a two part Avengers 3. All the stones will probably be introduced by then (Strange, Inhumans, Black Panther, Thor3?) and we get a two act structure where Thanos first picks them up one by one and the heroes try to stop him individually or haphazardly and then after they all fail you end the first movie with the death of half the galaxy, boom, black screen. (Let's get some Empire Strikes Back type of shock going.)

They could just as easily shove it back a couple movies. Its all down to Marvel Studios. Do I want to see Kang before or after Inf Gauntlet? I don't particularly care, I just want to see them both. I'd say before, but they'd've been doing Thanos bits for something like five years already then. Depends on audience reaction I'd say, if the train starts slowing they need to let the hammer drop.

@superotherside:
How dare you exclude Strange?! :P

Yes, I read the editorial.... As much as I would love to see a Thanos solo movie, I really doubt it will ever happen. In all honesty, I'm not even sure we will get "Death" as a character in the MCU, we may not even get Mephisto, so Thanos will be different. The MCU is a different interpretation from the comics.

One thing that I'm sure of is Thanos will have the same personality, Thanos will still be Thanos in the MCU, and he will still have the same motives.

Also, there are ~ 9 or 10 movies that still have to play out between now and Avengers 3. That is more than enough time to allow Thanos to evolve in the MCU and prove why he is a threat to Earth, The Universe, and The Avengers.

This is just my opinion but i really do hope Thanos is the main villain of The Avengers 3 only because the villain has been hyped up and built up with in Phase 1 and 2 of these Marvel films.

Although i do think The Avengers 3 should be split in to two parts and have not just the Avengers but every other hero teaming up with The Avengers against Thanos.
Sideswipe89
Sideswipe89 - 9/11/2014, 9:17 AM

I agree with you on a lot of your points. I think Avengers 3 will feature Thanos as the main villain. I don't know why some people want to wait six to fourteen years to see him as the main villain. None of us are getting any younger. Neither are the actors. There are plenty of villains that can give the avengers a hard time after thanos. It doen't all have to end with him. I do think they will really shake up the avengers roster after avengers 3 though.

I also don't need to see a stand alone with him. But thats just a preference. They could do it, and they could do it great. I would just rather they dedicate a movie to other characters.

There are a couple of things that I disagree with though.

I do think they could make avengers 3 a two parter. I don't know how likely that will be, especially with actor contracts involved. But I don't think its completly out of the question though. We've seen harry potter, twilight, hunger games and the hobbit do the same thing. It also allows more development of the plot and the characters.

Also, I would like to see a team up with guardians of the galaxy and the avengers in the third installment. I would be very difficult to use all the characters but I think it can be done.

In my opinion, I don't think you need to give every character an arc. In most movies, there are usually only three to four characters that get an arc. I don't think every character needs to get fleshed out, especially if thats not what the movie is going for. I think the movie will focus more on the event.

And I think Marvel can get away with this because many of the characters they use have their own franchises. Other movies don't really have that factor. We don't need to see major character development from Iron man, Captain America and Thor because they'll have entire trilogies dedicated to their development. Thats not to say one or two of those characters can't have a major arc in the movie, I just don't think all of them need to.

I think Days of Future Past is good example of what avengers 3 can do. Theres about 20 comic book characters in that movie. They all get a chance to shine. But it places its main focus on about four of them. And in my opinion, it works.

For avengers 3, I would have the avengers team up with the guardians against thanos. I'd even have the defenders and other characters make very brief cameos. I would have character arcs for the characters that represented their teams. For example, you could have arcs for Captain America and star lord, the leaders of each team. Or you could just focus the simillarites and differences of the two team dynamics. I think its all possible to do and do well. It would be challenging, but given the right directors and writers it can work.

Its all just my opinion though, no need to agree. In reality, Marvel can go in any number of directions. We just have to wait and see.

I apologize for the long post

@Gliderman I doubt it'll be rotating since they just keep adding in heroes to the Avengers. Sure you'll have the defenders and the Guardians, but that's why it'll probably be a two parts. To balance everything out without having it be this huge jumbled mess of one film with everyone except the big characters getting the most development. I can easily see Avengers 3 being a two part to bring everyone so far in the MCU together against Thanos in a huge battle.

I don't consider those other teams avengers as well. But there have been plenty of times in the comics and in animation where the avengers have teamed up with other teams. Thats how i would look at avengers 3. The avengers would still be their own team, they would just be working with other teams.

Look forward to your editorial!
