The Batgirl movie has been a long time coming, but with Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) penning the screenplay and Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi (Ms. Marvel) set to direct, it's finally starting to take shape. The DC Comics adaptation is heading straight to HBO Max rather than theaters and is one of a number of lower budgeted movies being developed for the streaming service.
Few details have been revealed up until now, but The Illuminerdi has shared some very interesting character intel that offer a better idea of what to expect from Batgirl.
For Barbara Gordon, Warner Bros. is reportedly looking to cast an actress in her early 20s. That was to be expected, of course, but it's now been confirmed that Commissioner Jim Gordon will also have a key role to play in the story as a "strong supporting character." For Jim, an actor in his 50s is being sought, so it sounds like J.K. Simmons won't be making his return here.
In terms of Batgirl's big bad, an actor in his 50s - 60s is being looked for to fill the role of a "disgruntled firefighter." As the site points out, this sounds a lot like Firefly, the first villain Barbara actually squared off with alongside Killer Moth in the pates of Batgirl: Year One. Him being a firefighter is a slight departure from the comic books, but one that could give him a connection to the Commissioner.
Time will tell, but with production expected to begin this November, chances are it won't be too much longer until we get some official casting news for the movie.
