BATGIRL Co-Director Responds To The Negative Reaction To Leslie Grace's Costume Reveal

Batgirl star Leslie Grace shared a first official look at her take on Barbara Gordon in full costume last night, and co-director Adil El Arbi has now responded to the somewhat negative reaction.

We got our first official look at Leslie Grace fully suited-up as Batgirl last night when the actress shared a promo image of her costume, and while a lot of fans appreciated the comic-accurate design, not everyone was on board.

Some felt the outfit was more reminiscent of something we might see on one of The CW's DC TV shows than a big-budget feature, and there were more than a few digs that Grace looked like she was "cosplaying" as the character.

Well, co-director Adil El Arbi clearly took note of the response, as he shared the following to his Instagram stories today.

This could confirm speculation that Babs will don a different costume at some point in the movie, but there's a chance El Arbi is simply pointing out that these duds will look better when we actually see Batgirl in action.

Batgirl will also star J.K. Simmons as Jim Gordon, and Jacob Scipio and Brendan Fraser in undisclosed roles (the latter is believed to be playing the villainous Firefly). It's also been confirmed that Michael Keaton's Batman will appear.

Loki composer Natalie Holt recently announced that she's signed on to work on the movie's score, while Christina Hodson, who wrote Bumblebee and also worked on Birds of Prey and The Flash, penned the most recent draft of the script.

The HBO Max movie does not have an official release date.

Based on the image is does like a bit "CW" but it could look very different in motion after the post production process.

@AC1 - also even though it looks "a bit 'CW'" it'd probably be the best looking CW costume, and it's better looking than a bunch of the movie costumes too

@AC1 - I'm a bit torn. People call it cosplay, but this isn't a Wayne tech suit, this is her putting together her own fit "inspired" by Batman, so the cosplay "home made" esthetic is both comic accurate and makes sense in world. Even still, it looks professional to me. If memory serves, people were kinda mixed on this redesign when it debuted in the comics as well, so I can understand why people simply don't like the look of the suit.

My concern is that TBIS character is who DC is trying to say is replacing Batman in a new Trinity. Barbara Gordon can't even replace Batman in the comics, nobody can... they've tried and it sucks. It's Bruce and the dynamic of his world that worked so well all these sub characters could grow from his mythos and legend, but don't mistake their mere ability to exist as an equivalent to Batman's entire appeal.

I'm not sure I want this Batgirl, a Supergirl and Wonder Woman being the new Trinity....its just.... do I even need to say what it reeks of?

@ElricReturns - yeah I kinda agree, the costume really doesn't look bad, she's easily recognisable as Batgirl, but WB's decision to basically write out Batman and Superman from the DCEU seems really illogical. If I'm honest I can't think of anything DC currently has in the works that I'm looking forward to watching apart from The Batman.

Bad Boys 4 Life was 90 mil. No way it’s under that.

@regularmovieguy - Michael Keaton's salary is probably taking a big chunk of the budget for Batgirl...

@Themeparkmovies -

It's normal that the suit is low-budget. She made it, it's homemade. She doesn't have Wayne Enterprises' ressources on her side to make her wonderful toys... yet.

@Amuro - Low budget is one thing. I don't like the design of this.

@Amuro - For different reasons, but I wasn't into that concept either of Peter's pre Stark costume not looking more like his classical one. I preferred that to look different, like I prefer this batgirl costume to.

I also don't like the design of the batgirl purple costume look.

I love people on here are just like "Ugh its ok because it's comic accurate"

As if that's the only indicator of quality

@DipperPines - yeah, its from the new era of post 2010s comics that has plummeting sales and serves as an ideas sandbox and safety net for whatever crap they decide to pull in the films. so they can say - but its from the comics.. when it didnt really work there in the first place.

@DipperPines - Best part is, we are talking about "comic book accuracy" when we have this Barbara...so, "comic accuracy" is a good thing only when it suits my tastes?

It looks made for TV that’s the problem. Like the red Netflix Daredevil costume.

The suit is pretty bad but what sticks out to me is the fish scale cowl. DC loves weird textured things for some reason.

@Malatrova234 - The Sonic design is a completely different situation. Sonic doesn't have an opportunity for a costume change. I'm glad dumbass fanboys don't have the ability to make movies, because they would be pathetic lmao
Origame
Origame - 1/15/2022, 12:49 PM
@Uhhhhhh - if anything they have more of an opportunity than the sonic team. With sonic, they already released a trailer and had tons of merchandise with that design. Here it's still filming.

@Malatrova234 - Yeah, sure, the artists owe random people on the internet endless respect and deference while they attack their work.

People like you are why it’s so hard to get established talent on these projects. Embarrassing the fandom.
Himura
Himura - 1/15/2022, 5:36 PM
@Origame - lol no they dont. Sonic was a completely CGI character that you can easily swap. You cant just edit out an entire practical costume after the movie is filmed lmao.
dagenspear
dagenspear - 1/15/2022, 6:36 PM
@Uhhhhhh - They don't have to change it in this movie, like that. But that doesn't mean they can't admit either what they did or that it's their opinion.
Origame
Origame - 1/15/2022, 7:10 PM
@Himura - first of all, you can just redesign the costume. Maybe not the same thing, but it's certainly not much more time consuming or expensive. And they barely shot anything so it would at best mess with the schedule a bit.

Second, are you also suggesting they cgi'd all of their merchandise? No, they had to completely redesign and remake all of that to make it match the new design. They objectively lost so much money over that redesign at that point, something that certainly wouldn't be nearly the problem now that it's still in the filming process.
