BATMAN Actor Michael Keaton Confirmed To Return As The Dark Knight For HBO Max BATGIRL Movie

An updated Batgirl cast list with Michael Keaton's name on it found its way online earlier today, and we now have confirmation that the actor is set to reprise his iconic role for the HBO Max movie.

It's official: Michael Keaton will reprise the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman for the currently shooting Batgirl movie.

Earlier today, an updated cast list with the actor's name was shared online, but we weren't sure if it was officially released by Warner Bros. or not (it's an easy thing to mock-up, after all). However, THR has now confirmed that Keaton will indeed return as The Caped Crusader for the upcoming HBO Max feature.

We don't have much more to go on, but this news would seem to suggest that reports of Keaton staying on as the DCEU's Dark Knight following his role in The Flash might be accurate. It's also unclear if the Dopesick star will have a substantial role in the movie or only make a cameo appearance, but we'd say there's a decent chance he will serve as a mentor-like figure for Leslie Grace's Barbara Gordon.

Batgirl will also star J.K. Simmons as Jim Gordon, along with Jacob Scipio and Brendan Fraser in undisclosed roles (the latter is believed to be playing the villainous Firefly). Loki composer Natalie Holt recently announced that she's signed on to work on the movie's score, while Christina Hodson, who wrote Bumblebee and also worked on Birds of Prey and The Flash, penned the most recent draft of the script.

Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah recently announced the start of production on Batgirl with a set photo, though no premiere date has been set.

I would've been totally fine with it if it was also confirmed that it was taking place in his universe. Now it seems he'll definitely replace Affleck.

I don't mind it, but I rather see a fully rebooted continuity or a continuation of the Burtonverse. Not this weird Frankenstein sutuation The Flash movie seems to be setting up.

@bkmeijer - I definitely agree. My thinking is kinda like this, I would have preferred this be a Batman Beyond movie, but then I try to remember that Batman Beyond was a risky new idea at one point too. So, I'm gonna try to keep an open mind and not be picky about continuity. So long as the story it's self and the characters are written to be competent and actually act like themselves, I'm kinda open to what they wanna try to come up with. Hopefully it's solid and clever.

@ElricReturns - I am open to it too, but I certainly have my reservations about it. Might also be because I have little interest in The Flash movie and what comes from it (only Supergirl and Keaton's Batman really)

@dragon316 - that sounds very generalizing, but I think I get what you mean. A look is different from a whole story though

*Sigh* I’m good on this then. It makes me feel like everything I was worried they’d do with this and the rumors of Superman and Batman being replaced by Supergirl and Batgirl with Keaton as the mentor to the latter are true. I love Batgirl and Supergirl don’t get me wrong but this to me is a small example of the much bigger issue of WB just throwing whatever at the wall and hoping it sticks and trying to copy the MCU without understanding why that or their own IP works in the first place.

dracula - 12/22/2021, 6:31 PM
@Ha1frican - Well they arent copying marvel anymore thats why we are getting so many different stuff. Plus who needs two batmans in action at the same time.

Got Pattinson for young batman and keaton for retired bruce
WruceBayne
WruceBayne - 12/22/2021, 6:41 PM
@Ha1frican - yeah that definitely looks like what they’re doing. Do you think they’re going to address the fact that Keaton’s Batman is different than Affleck’s Batman in this universe?
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 12/22/2021, 7:04 PM
@dracula - Aren’t copying Marvel anymore? Do you think it’s a coincidence they got James Gunn to do Suicide Squad (after trying to edit the first movie to mimic Guardians), are doing a multiversal movie featuring the plucky young member of their superhero team featuring a major cameo from a legacy actor, and are greenlighting every tv show for their streaming service they possibly can? With the exception of The Batman they are still very obviously chasing Marvel’s coat tails with little to no plan or understanding of their IP
Ha1frican
Ha1frican - 12/22/2021, 7:05 PM
@WruceBayne - At first yes but I think they’ll merge universes at the end of that movie
dracula
dracula - 12/22/2021, 7:16 PM
@Ha1frican -

They got a director after disney fired them. What are directors who have worked for the competition off limits? Suicide Squad was also very different than Guardians. Obvious why they got Gunn, that is true.

This Flash movie has been in the works since before Spiderman no way home was even being made and before the multiverse aspect of the movie was even being talked about. They were pretty much being developed at the same time. Marvel just managed to get theirs out first (Also Spiderman is probably better than the flash will be)

They have shows all over the place CW, Netflix, HBOMax. They have a streaming service and are supplying it with shows, that how an entertainment company works.

You might have something with the first two but the whole putting shows on a streaming service thing is straight up BS. Seriously WB would be stupid not to put stuff on HBOMax, thats how you have a successful service

@dracula - *shows connected to their cinematic universe and upcoming films.

I should have been more clear but cmon I don’t this it’s a coincidence that after a year packed with MCU shows that they are seemingly greenlighting anything attached to these upcoming movies for HBO Max especially when as you said they already have and have had their own TV strategy for years
dracula
dracula - 12/22/2021, 7:37 PM
@Ha1frican - Okay then guess you have a point there, but really outside of release, they arent exactly emulating anything. If they wanted to copy marvel, there are betting choices than a cop show, a mob show and Peacemaker.

Like really Black Lightnig, while id say it was better, it was a clear attempt to emulate Luke Cage

Looked up a bit on flash and spiderman, yeah no copying went down there
Andy signed onto Flash around the same time the sony and marvel deal was back on. Spiderverse wasnt the plan before the deal going bad the first time. so they were developed at the same time

But it will be J. K. Simmons as Jim Gordon? In what universe is this suppose to take place in? Also Gordon being played by a younger actor than Bruce, kind of odd, gotta say.

Michael Keaton being here does feel like The Flash film is being slowly spoiled.

@NinnesMBC - I'd complain if Marvel didn't do the same thing with Spider-Man: Far from Home coming out after Endgame (even if we knew what happened to the character in Infinity War wasn't obviously permanent).
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 12/22/2021, 10:34 PM
@demery - That sounds fair, it's just that the differencies lies in we knew that the next time we would see Spidey it would still be Tom Holland under the mas and not a previous actor under it reprising it because he was removed.

Off-topic: @KingPatel when you able (like after all the holidays are over of course) you could make the next DCTV article about the newest Superman & Lois Season like the pics for the 1st episode and the new released poster.

https://supermanandloistv.com/what-lies-beneath-gallery

A poster for Naomi also came out last week along with the first trailer.

And well the conclusion of The Flash's Armageddon storyline and what comes next on March 9th when it returns on a new schedule on Wednesdays.

@NinnesMBC - I just don’t understand the premise of this Naomi tv show.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 12/22/2021, 6:58 PM
@dracula - The theory has slowly become glued to the fandom's mind so yeah the hype is strong there.

It really would have delivered more if they showed her wearing her golden armor that she wears in the comics or at least tease it in some way. The show's gonna be a slow burn about her mastering her powers and then going into fights. So we're talking about a payoff.

I liked RF's and they're mostly promotional in the same way they released ones of Atom, Black Ligthning, Batwoman etc. Now this makes me realize Despero also deserved his own though.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 12/22/2021, 7:00 PM
@WruceBayne - It's based on the comic book that came out two years and a half ago and she's basically an alien with some possible ties to not just Superman but these other DC heroes she thought were just fiction. They're likely borrowing mostly from her comic book run but also gonna take some liberties here and there.
