Canceled BATGIRL Movie Reportedly Received The Same Test Score As This October's BLACK ADAM

No matter how much fans would like to see Warner Bros. #SaveBatgirl, it's become apparent that it's not going to happen, & this news is sure to only further incense those angry about the cancellation.

As is so often the case with matters in Hollywood, we may never know the true story behind Batgirl's cancellation. The gist appears to be that, as Warner Bros. Discovery shifts gears, the movie was deemed too expensive for streaming and not cinematic enough for theaters.

We've heard that Batgirl's sole test screening saw it score similar to Shazam! Fury of the Gods, prompting fans to wonder why the studio wouldn't look to recoup its costs with a theatrical release. After all, even with a modest $300 million box office haul, it would surely still have been worth completing and promoting the movie.

CEO David Zaslav has other ideas, though, and this latest news is sure to once again frustrate fans.

According to Fandango's Erik Davis and The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez, that supposed bad test screening saw Batgirl score the same as the director's cut of Black Adam. That movie will have obviously been through some changes since then, but should it receive negative reviews later this year, expect a lot of critics to ask why it deserved to be released and Batgirl didn't!

There are some noteworthy differences between the two movies, of course. For starters, Dwayne Johnson is a huge star and Black Adam is clearly a big budget, flashy blockbuster in the making. Batgirl, on the other hand, was much smaller in scale and despite including names like Michael Keaton and J.K. Simmons, it's unlikely to have been as big a draw as Black Adam's debut.

It's a shame about Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah's movie, but it is what it is at this point. Warner Bros. Discovery is unlikely to change course, so short of a leak, Batgirl will remain on the shelf.

From New Line Cinema, Dwayne Johnson stars in the action-adventure Black Adam under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise). Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the ancient gods - and imprisoned just as quickly - Black Adam (Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.

Johnson stars alongside Aldis Hodge (One Night in Miami) as Hawkman, Noah Centineo (To All the Boys I've Loved Before) as Atom Smasher, Sarah Shahi (Sex/Life) as Adrianna, Marwan Kenzari (Murder on the Orient Express) as Ishmael, Quintessa Swindell (Trinkets) as Cyclone, Bodhi Sabongui (A Million Little Things) as Amon, and Pierce Brosnan (James Bond) as Dr. Fate.

Black Adam will electrify audiences in theaters when it's released on October 21, later this year!

The Black Adam movie has to release cause the hierarchy of power in the DC universe has to change.

So if Batgirl scored like the other two they might just be as bad?

It may of received the same test score but the Rock is a bigger box office draw and they should make their money back and more.

@marvel72 - Well, BA will also cost 3-4 times more than Batgirl so it has to make a lot more money to make a profit in comparison to Batgirl. And I don't see BA making all that much of a profit. Trailer was pretty dull.

Some people seem to be thinking this is just about quality of the movie. Of course that it is about money. If it was tracking to make a lot of mulla it wouldn't have been cancelled.

Black Adam's budget indeed has to be more than Batwoman's, right? It's OK to have movies with spectacle, but also movies with smaller stakes.

I guess if both movies have the same score, but one has more explosions than the other one, WB feels like the one with the spectacle will make money over the one without.

@Waddles - that would be my guess as well for the budget. None of this seems quite right.

Ok, I get it. Black Adam has The Rock, who has a few box office hits in his belt. He has the star power, and that movie has the spectacle, but that wouldn't explain Shazam!

I don't know how much bigger they went for Shazam 2, but one didn't have a lot of action/Spectacle, nor did it make a lot of money. If all these movies tested similar, why just attack Batgirl? Is it the old "women led movies don't do well"? Of course, I'm just talking out loud, trying to make sense of this.

@MyCoolYoung - It could just honestly be that the quality wasn’t there. Just because a test screening enjoyed it doesn’t mean it was good. There’s a big difference between quality and enjoyability.

@Deklipz - that's true. What I'm holding onto is the wording. He spoke about spectacle, spectacle isn't indicative of quality at all.

My own personal opinion is that all this “Batgirl tested bad” stuff is just hyperbole…I feel like The Flash is getting canceled outright and everything that tied into that movie is either going to be re-shot (Keaton’s part in Aquaman) or getting shelved as well (Batgirl)…All the other stuff is just excuses to shift the blame elsewhere…

@vegetaray - This is an interesting theory. A few years ago, I don't think there was a chance a movie as big as Flash would get canceled this late in the game. But now, it's a whole different industry. If the Flash does get canceled, which is looking more an more possible, I think your idea will be proved to be 100% correct. Canceling Batgirl might be the first step towards shutting down everything related to the Flash movie.

Also, another aspect of this could be if Keaton was promised a small truckload of money upon both Batgirl's and Flash's release. Could any extra incentives he receives be negated for Aquaman since his scenes were reshot with Affleck? Maybe, but I don't know how these deals work. This could be a way for WB to not have to pay Keaton extra if they don't have to (if there is such a deal in place), save their reputation as the Ezra Miller accusations grow more serious, and preserve these characters for further down the road.

@vegetaray - Supergirl is also said to be cancelled. I do agree that Flash being axed is likely the reason.
