In the summer of 1989, Bat-fever took the public by storm with the highly anticipated release of the Warner Bros. film, Batman. Directed by Tim Burton, the new production had taken some groundbreaking risks, with visionary art direction, musical score, but perhaps most famously, with its casting.

As had been the case with Richard Donner’s Superman in 1978, many of Hollywood’s best actors were considered for the leading role of the Caped Crusader. But when the final decision to cast Michael Keaton as Batman was announced, it caused a torrential uproar of controversy. The studio received tens of thousands of protest letters from fans criticizing Keaton’s abilities, citing his previous quirky performances in comedies and the fact that he lacked the tall, muscular physique often attributed to the character in the comic books.

Fortunately, producer Jon Peters and director Tim Burton saw something in Keaton that others could not. Peters claimed that he had the right “edgy, tormented quality.” Having worked together the previous year on Beetlejuice, Burton agreed, declaring Keaton the only actor who could portray the kind of dark, obsessive personality Batman’s character demands.

The dramatic and serious tone was exactly what distinguished Tim Burton’s portrayal of Gotham City’s greatest superhero. Ultimately, Michael Keaton’s gripping performance earned widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike, and Batman became one of the most successful films of the year. “I want you to tell all your friends about me… I’m Batman.”

The Burton film and suit was iconic... but its a look that has passed.
The best suit by far was the Batman Begins suit, fearsomely formidable and forboding yet realistic and modern. TKR one was too tech-ninja and lost some of the fearsome bat iconography.

I will always love this suit and Keaton's performance, and the best voice by far (Conroy is tied!).The Begins suit was fantastic except for the neck area of the cowl and the little triangle clasps where the cape meets the rest of the suit.Otherwise the best of the Nolan trilogy

And the fake muscles had a purpose,he wanted criminals to be "fooled" into thinking it was just a costume over skin and not what it was which was Kevlar armor, thereby drawing gunfire away from his exposed face.Makes sense

The Tim Burton movie Sucks ass. Michael keton was one of the worst things about it. He's not a particularly great actor and he doesn't look a damn thing like Bruce Wayne. The guy looked like he had pubic hair growing out of his head for pete sake

His head is slightly turned to the side and tilted, which would be more authentic if it was JUST his head that turned inside the mask. Maybe have him twisting his mouth a bit against the pull of the rubber on his cheek, too. Also, too few wrinkles in the rubber.

Probably the lumpiest, most cumbersome-looking, least mobile-looking costume in the history of comic book movies.

wow, alot of hate. but opinions can't outbeat facts. This film started it all, love it or hate it and is, to date, the most faithful Batman adaptation.

This suit is iconic! I personally like the suit in Batman Returns better. I don't think many people really noticed how different it was from this one. The Bat emblem doesn't have the extra points at the bottom and the chest piece is more armor-like.

You mean "Burtonman" because that certainly wasn't batman in that film. Also, the belt and gadgets, while looking cool at the time, never had any rhyme or reason behind them; they just did what the plot conveniently needed them to do, whereas they at least made an effort in giving us a reason for the car and the gadgets in Batman begins and I still like that suit more than this one. Why would batman even wear that yellow pin on his chest? Does he want criminals to be able to use him as target practice? The films themslves never really found the character of batman interesting enough to respect him. He kills like what, all his enemies in those two films? he has not done that in 70 years in the comics. Such a stupid film series and it only gets a pass because of nostalgia on the part of the people who were like 6 years old when they watched it back in teh 90s. Other than that the Burton films have aged horribly and he himself has said he doesn't like comics so that would explain the stupid origin of Catwoman and the Penguin, all the nonsensical plot elements (rocket-launching penguins, really?)and overall, it started the trend of pushing batman to the side because Burton was never really interested in Bruce Wayne or Batman really, which is why Keaton left after batman Returns in the first place. The villains were always the centre-pieces and even then Jack Nicholson just played Jack Nicholson again. And people give Chris Nolan shit for changing stuff? Pff, please.

The statute looks nice but it's not really batman.

@batfan175

You're making me break out my geek-cred here. Batman actually WILL wear the yellow bat symbol SPECIFICALLY to make criminals shoot at it, as that is where his body armor is the strongest (as well as having an impact plate below the symbol). So, they might not have mentioned it but there is a reason for it.
batfan175
batfan175 - 1/24/2014, 10:27 AM
@loki668: Well, if Burton did know that fact then he did a good job of keeping quiet about it. As I said, Burton himself only ever read the Killing Joke (without really bothering to bring that complex Relationship to the sceen) and otherwise said he didn't care for comics so I doubt he knew that.
