THE DARK KNIGHT RISES: Matthew Modine On Batman, THOR and The Avengers

The Dark Knight Rises star Matthew Modine "can't really relate to Thor" and insinuates that "the Avengers are just mythological characters with magic powers."

Most of the readers here at CBM will probably recall The Dark Knight Rises star Matthew Modine setting the twiterworld on fire about a month ago with his remarks about The Avengers. If not, you should certainly take the time to read Mark Julian's write up on the subject (((HERE))).

Now, the actor (who portrays Gotham Deputy Commissioner Foley in TDR) has offered even more of his thoughts to the world concerning Marvel's heroes and their differences in relation to Batman. Speaking with CBR, he had quite a bit to say about the upcoming conclusion to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. Much of the interview is Modine reiterating comments from previous interviews. However, he did manage add more of his thoughts on the differences between Batman and Marvel's heroes.

From CBR...

"I think he's such an extraordinary character, Batman, because he's a human being. He's not a man with supernatural powers, he's not a mythological character -- he's just a man who's damaged, who's broken like so many people in the world...trying to do good."

"The interesting point then becomes, when you do good, when you're fighting crime, when do you cross that line of becoming a vigilante? I think that 'broken person doing good' is something we all aspire to in our life, trying to overcome our fears and trying to fight evil in the world. He's a character we all relate to."

"You can't really relate to Thor, for instance! I like the story, but I don't relate to him -- I can't use his hammer!"

"I don't want to offend the [Marvel] people by saying that the Avengers are just mythological characters with magic powers, because I'd offend half of the people who buy comic books. But the thing that's extraordinary about Batman is that he's a man, he's not a superman. He's of this earth...he's broken and he's trying to repair himself. I think that Christopher Nolan has been a masterful storyteller in taking that story about the Dark Knight and re-envisioning the story for a whole new generation of film goers."

I don't need to relate to the character to enjoy a story. I don't even need to find him sympathetic. Just entertaining.

Batman yep he's definetaly the most relatable hero on film and comic books, every ones a billionaire, good looking playboy, with a mastery of matial arts and genius level intellect. [frick] guys like spiderman they can't be relatable cause they have super powers we can't relate to a character who is bullied, or is a nerd. Or even Thor a guy who is a god we can't relate to themes of betrayal, family conflict or failure, nope batman is the only relatable guy ever in comic books. Shut up Matthew modine you've done sod all since full metal jacket and if you're going to make sweeping statements perhaps you should actually think first before you make yourself out to be an idiot.

What ever I don't relate to a billionaire who dresses up as a bat either. If you say the same thing as he was about Thor. But I can relate to an arrogant person finding humility. It's the character which in ANY story that matters. It doesn't matter if they're super powered or not.

Batman is cool, but to me, he is anything but relatable.

well, i'm not rich and both my parents are
still alive. does that mean i cant relate to
batman. Modine is a IDIOT!! Whats he know.
i bet if he was in avengers or Thor he'd
be singing a different tune.

He's an idiot. Hawkeye + Widow have no powers. Iron Man is just a guy in a high tech suit. Cap is bascically a guy on steroids. Thor and Hulk are the only 'mythological characters with magic powers'. That description better suits the Justiec League, minus Batman.

Another point on this is that Marvel characters from the word go were designed to be relatable, whereas DC characters exist to be inspiration. Take for example spiderman, a relatable character with real world problems (you know them I won't list them) compared to superman a person with perfect characteristics who people should strive to be like. (apply this theory to most DC and marvel characters it's true) so now modine is transcending the very nature of the two publishing giants like an idiot.

can't relate to bruce wayne/batman either.

-i haven't lost my parents.
-i haven't got a ton of money
-i don't dress up as a bat at night or during the day(the dark knight rises)

peter parker/spider-man is probably the most relatable character, part from the super powers elements of his life may of effected us all in some way.

LOLOOLOLOLO I freaking love this guy.

People are being pissy for no reason. I love the MCU as much as any other guy but come on people, lighten up.

You know, you see all these fake people like Feige saying how much they like TDK, I mean it just reeks of looking good for the fans.

This guy, being a total ass towards marvel fans is just hilarious.

@thewonderer

How does Feige liking the Dark Knight seem fake? This guy isn't being an ass towards anyone either. He's just talking about how he likes Batman.

Modine is just happy people are interviewing him. Give the guy a break, the last time he was relevant, Reagan was president. Actors seems to need to relate to charactors to enjoy a movie, he ain't the first one I have heard use that line.

Anyways, agree with every negative or sarcstic comment aimed at his douchebag ass.
Joker08
Joker08 - 6/13/2012, 2:50 PM
He's got a point. Batman is the most relatable character, really - especially this Batman. Let's stop kidding ourselves; who here hasn't dressed up like a bat to fight crime? Who here hasn't been left for dead? Who here didn't undergo ninja training on an ice-lake? Who here hasn't tackled Aaron Eckhart off of a construction platform? You get the picture.

Avengers may be one of the best movies ever, but he's totally right - even if he's chlearly never seen it...

Jesus, this site is chalk full of hypocrites. Thor you can relate to, but Superman you can't? I'm referring to comments being said on Man of Steel-related articles btw. Truth is, you can relate to every superhero at one point or another despite them having "superpowers". That's the magic, people.

I admire the man for saying what he actually thinks instead of tiptoeing around every subject imaginable (like every other actor in Hollywood).

I don't agree with him but I do give his "BALLS OF STEEL" the kudos they deserve.
LoudNoises
LoudNoises - 6/13/2012, 2:56 PM
Putting aside the argument about whether Modine is a douche, he clearly isn't saying that everyone can relate to a billionaire martial arts expert who fights crime. Dear god people, could you possible do a better job of misrepresenting what someone is saying? He was talking about the human element of Bruce Wayne and his struggle with over coming his fears. That's what we relate to. And for the record I disagree that other Marvel characters don't offer this as well. Even Thor has that struggle of human redemption they we can relate to despite the supernatural elements of the story.
