Like nearly every fan of comic book movies I couldn’t click on the link fast enough when I saw that DC had released its first image of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. However, that excitement quickly turned to confusion when my eyes met what appeared to be a knock-off of Xena The Warrior Princess.

I wasn’t looking for the star-spangled panties per se but at least some hint of color; after all it is a comic book movie and not Game of Thrones.

No longer than 3 minutes after my initial disappointment I received a phone call from a friend who is a die-hard DC fanboy.

“Oh-Em-Gee, you see the new pic of Wonder Woman?” he screamed in my ear.

As a guy a tad more partial to Marvel, I had a serious choice to make. My boy was having a moment. For years he’s been frustrated with WB’s slow start in creating a DC cinematic universe and today was his dream come true. He finally had a look at “the Trinity.”  I could either be brutally honest and piss on his parade or fake the excitement and let him have this moment. I decided on the latter… at least for the moment.

Since then I’ve looked at the new Wonder Woman images a few dozen times and each time I look at the copper colored medieval outfit I had to ask myself, “What is DC afraid of?” The one thing I give Marvel a lot of credit for is that they’re not afraid of having their comic book movies feel like comic books.

Take Captain America’s outfits for example. Marvel was bold in dressing Cap in his modern red and white stripes and bright blue suit in the first installment of the Avengers, maybe a little too bold. Thankfully they’ve made some color and design adjustments in Avengers: AoU and he’ll look a little less like a Bomb Pop. But I applaud them for trying to honor the comic books as best as possible.

It appears that Zack Synder is still looking to channel Christopher Nolan’s down to earth approach to comic book movies. That worked for the much more grittier and grounded Dark Knight, but it shouldn’t apply to Wonder Woman.

One problem that I had with Snyder’s Man of Steel was that it was too dull looking. The entire movie looked as if it had some terrible Instagram filter on it to wash out Superman’s colorful tights. If I could suspend my disbelief that a beautiful warrior princess from an Amazon race arrives on the scene yielding a magic sword and Lasso of Truth, then I can accept a hint of blue and red in her outfit.

My hope is that this is not Synder’s only outfit for Wonder Woman. Perhaps this is the outfit she is first introduced in. Like any other fanboy I can’t wait to see Superman v. Batman in 2016 but hopefully it’ll be in color.

why is there no thumbs down button?

I wish dumb people would understand. XENA CAME AFTER WW SO XENA IS IN FACT A WW KNOCKOFF COMPLETELY SO MUCH IN FACT THAT THE CREATOR OF XENA SAID HE WAS INSPIRED BY WW FOR HER AND HER LOOK...

smh. People complaining about colours of the suit when there are clearly filters on it to make it all blend in with the background. Having a highly saturated wonder woman against a volcano wouldn't really fit well. By your account, the batman suit is just grey because it the photo had a black and white filter on it. Marvel movies have a bright colour palette so all they're movies look more colourful and the costumes seem to pop more.

By herself she looks fine but when she's next to Bats and Supes, her outfit looks like a Party City Deluxe costume.

As for people complaining about the Xena comparisons that's the first thing the general audience gravitated to. They've never seen Wonder Woman except in red, white and blue one piece so of course they're going to make comparisons. Salty fans are just running with it tho.

I have to say it DOES look like a Xena ripoff. So far the best Wonder Woman outfit is from pornography. That porno suit if it had a dark blue battle skirt without the stars would look awesome

Another cynical article on the internet ...that is what is meh about all of this. The suit looks fine and meshes with Snyder's vision with being true to the comic book at the same time. Actually, even as a Marvel fan, I was a bit taken at how awesome it looked. It is a good costume ...but the real meat and potatoes is her acting.

I think Snyder is going to rock the movie and the action and I can't wait to see it, but I wasn't that impressed with the Wonder Woman reveal (it is just a picture though) I'm also not totally sold on Gadot at all but I trust Snyder

The footage of Batman and Superman plus the dark knight returns influence looked amazing

The costume is fine!!
It's the person wearing it that's disappointing.
She looks like a random cosplay chick and doesn't add much to the image.

I also don't see how it looks like Xena. The bronze filter?

Have you guys actually seen any of Wonder Woman's costumes in the past 30 years?

You know i did say when it was first revealed that the costume does remind me of "Xena" but i'm cool with it. She's an ancient Greek, i'm pretty sure that the ancient Greek's when they go in to battle they'd wear that gear or at least something resembling it.

Also, your over thinking this way too hard. It's a costume. At least we did'nt get something as awful as Wonder Woman's costume in that god awful un aired tv pilot.

I agree with the above comment about her acting ability. If she can't deliver the Commanding, Regal, and take no s**t presence that Wonder Woman has , then it'll just fall flat like a drunken skateboarder downhill.
I actually was surprised by how much I liked the costume. I personally dig the Amazonian armor than a bathing suit.
I was gonna go the true fanboy route an nitpick the heels on the new get-up, but you know what,
if Catwoman can hang and own it in heels, than why not Diana?
( Just waiting for that signature Zack Snyder slow motion kick)

I'm with the author. It's not just Xena. It's Lady Sif. It's Clash of the Titans. Hercules. 300. It's everything we've already seen a million times, and is in no way iconic or distinctly Wonder Woman.

You look at Batman's costume and its unmistakable.
You look at Superman's costume and it's unmistakable.
You look at Wonder Woman's costume, and she could be anybody from a number of other movies.

Its not a bad design. Just a lazy one. Another example of Hollywood copying each other, when the truth is, maybe WW's big screen debut could have.used.a little more imagination.

@RobGrizzly

Really? Who in 300, Xena, Hercules, Clash of the Titans, or Thor has a red top with a golden eagle on her breast, a golden W, a blue minskirt, knee golden boots, a golden tiara, golden gauntlets, and a golden lasso, with a sword as well. Name one other than Wonder Woman. If you can, see if they were inspired by her, and if they weren't, see if the general audience knows who they are.

You do realize Xena is a rip off of Wonder Woman right? This is why we can't have nice things.

Would you have complained because Sandor has his burns on his right-side instead of the Two-Face look? Or because Robb has dark brown hair instead of auburn? Or because Robert Aryn is Robin because they didn't want to confuse audiences with King Robert, just as Asha was changed to Yara so as to not be confused with Osha?

Listen, I get it. Why should Wonder Woman be short-changed, when Cap, Spider-man, Superman, Iron Man, and the Hulk all get their classic looks?

But you're complaining about muted colors when it's that kind of an image. For all you know, Gadot's costume might be just as bright as the Avengers' Captain America, but they drained the color to fit the background. Kind of silly.

I think you really just wanted to see stars on her skirt.

DC fans seem to like it. So I guess it is good. I still think she will look stupid standing next to two guys in muscle suits, but whatever.

The Wonder Woman shot is the only thing that excites me about this movie. Everybody was afraid of an emaciated look and while I would've preferred some more 'body' they've passed that bar as far as I'm concerned. I'll never really care about Superman's or Batman's look because in the end it always works out with those guys, while the WW from the series would look really odd in the current era. They even managed to mess up her look (and voice and personality) in an animated movie for chrissakes.

The only thing that bothers me is the heels.

Ghostpointzero - 7/29/2014, 7:58 AM
Jesus another Marvel fanboy trying to talk down to DC fans. That's all this article is. Another thing is this Man Of Steel was not grounded at all, it was an alien invasion movie. The movie had more of a serious tone but grounded? NO.

TwistedKingdom

The Xena comparisons are warranted. Not the characters but the costumes themselves. Wonder Woman did come first and is the basis for most of the female heroes we have today. But take a look at her costumes over the years.

There's really nothing Xena-like in any of these designs. It could be argued Lucy Lawless made this warrior look famous. I do believe part of the decision making process was based on what Gadot could pull off. Nevermind the WW pic, look at her from Comic-Con with Cavill and Affleck.

Costume designers need to keep in mind the actors' body types and what will look good on them. Maybe this was the best of the bunch.
