We ended 2022 with a lot of big news, particularly when it comes to the DCEU's DCU's future. Henry Cavill was ousted as Superman, while Dwayne Johnson would later confirm his exit as Black Adam (for now; read: for good).
The latter had been plotting an entire Black Adam "universe," with his anti-hero eventually facing the Man of Tomorrow in combat. That will no longer happen and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is in the midst of writing a Superman reboot focusing on a younger Clark Kent in Metropolis.
As a result of these sweeping changes, neither Man of Steel nor Black Adam will be getting sequels. That only makes this recent Digital release even more cringe-worthy, however.
Listed on the Microsoft Store (among other online retailers) on December 16 for $29.99, DC Comics fans can pick up the two movies mentioned above as part of a 2-Film Collection. It's an odd mix, but they are both origin stories and Black Adam's post-credits scene does feature Cavill's short-lived return as Superman.
Here's where things get awkward, though.
This collection was released one day after Gunn announced that Cavill would not be the DCU's Superman. It was also a mere four days before Johnson took to social media to confirm his time changing the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe had reached an abrupt end.
We're assuming this was probably given the green light prior to all those big behind-the-scenes changes, but it's hard not to wince at a 2-Film Collection for two movies that are the beginning and end of their respective franchises. There have been hints that both Cavill and The Rock could show up in the DCU at some point, but those were likely made to placate fans.
