BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER Promo Art Provides A First Look At The Villainous Attuma

Up until now, we weren't even sure that Attuma would appear in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, but some newly revealed promo art confirms that the Atlantean villain will factor into the sequel.

Well, it looks like the rumors claiming that Attuma would make his MCU debut in Marvel Studios' Black Panther: Wakanda Forever were accurate!

Some new promo art for Ryan Coogler's upcoming sequel has been shared online (via RPK News), giving us another look at Okoye and Shuri and a first glimpse of the villainous Atlantean.

In the comics, Attuma was a barbaric warlord and the sworn enemy of Namor the Sub-Mariner. He is a formidable warrior who believes himself to be the prophesied conqueror of the Atlantean Empire. As you can see, his character design his mostly comic-accurate, but his costume has been refitted to appear more Aztec/Mayan-like in origin.

This not only confirms Attuma's involvement in Wakanda Forever, but is obviously a pretty good indication that Namor and the other Atlantean characters we've been hearing about will also appear. This was never really in question after several leaked set photos, but it's worth noting that we've yet to get official word that Tenoch Huerta has been cast in the role.

The artwork also features Shuri sporting some new duds. There were rumors that Marvel Studios was planning to move forward with the sequel without Letitia Wright, who came under fire for supposedly espousing anti-vax views on set. This led to speculation that the actress may even have been fired outright, but clearly that wasn't the case.

Official plot details are still under wraps, but we have been assured that the MCU sequel will honor the late Chadwick Boseman while continuing the legacy of his character, T'Challa. We may now know how Marvel Studios and director Ryan Coogler intend to achieve this, but it's quite spoilery, so click here if you want to know more!

@bobevanz - Here's my take: if I was in charge, would I have recast? Yes. I think the character of T'Challa is culturally important and serves as a wonderful role model for Black youths, hell youths everywhere. But was Marvel in an unwinnable situation? Yes.

This truly was a once in a lifetime occurrence. Comparisons to Dumbledore, etc., don't fit because he's a mentor, supporting role, not the lead. Comparisons to recasting Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, etc., don't fit because those characters have a cultural presence outside this or that particular version. Unless (like me) you're a fan of Don McGregor, Christopher Priest, or Reginald Hudlin, Black Panther was "the guy in the back of the Avengers line-up" even to comic book fans pre-mid 2010s, much less the general audience. To them, T'Challa IS Chadwick.

I can't fault Marvel for whatever decision they took. Someone would be upset no matter what. Recast? They'd be upset. Pause the movie entirely? They'd be upset and then when production resumed, they'd be upset by whatever decision was made. Unlike Ryan Coogler, Kevin Feige, and Nate Moore, I have never met Chadwick Boseman, never worked with him, never befriended him, never got on a first name basis with him. I can completely understand why those who did didn't immediately start thinking about who would look good wearing his clothes.

Again, if it was up to me, I would have recast. But, and I'm not saying this about you to be clear, I cannot stand this attitude I have seen around the web of "God, Marvel is so STUPID not recasting, what a bunch of MORONS not choosing the obvious choice." Regardless of if I agree with it, they were put into a horrible position and did what they thought would honor Chadwick best.

@DalekCraigWasson - If I was Coogler, Feige, and the casting director I would NOT make T' Challa's absence definite and fixed even though it was unfortunate what happened to Chadwick.

Here's what I would do. If T' Challa isn't currently re-cast in Wakanda Forever I would explain his absence from the film as him being lost in the Techno Organic Jungle a fictional place in Wakanda in the comics.

This way it sets T'challa up in a 3rd film to be re-cast without stopping the character from being explored in a 3rd film and within the MCU. The 3rd film will be a re-discovery of that character and finding T-Challa lost in the Techno Organic Jungle which can be explored as another dimension under Wakanda. That's how I would like to see it be done. Hope they don't kill off the character. It's undeserving and a big mistake if they do.

It's really pointless to tell this story though without T'Challa. Just because Boseman died it shouldn't be the end of the character. The character is far bigger than any one actor no matter who.

Not recasting him would be like Sean Connery dying and them refusing to have another James Bond, or them not having another Superman after Christopher Reeve died.

@Vigor - Christopher Reeve died. So based on your logic Superman died with him and the next Superman shouldn’t have been Kal El or Clark Kent.

No actor no matter who is bigger than the character especially one like Black Panther/T’Challa who predates Boseman on this earth by a decade.

Bozeman born 1976, Black Panther released 1966.

@Vigor - It's not the same comparison. One had a 10 year long character that ended on a satisfying narrative conclusion. One is being forced by a tragic event out of the its control.

We can acknowledge the legacy and talent of Chadwick, and still continue the character, they don't have to be perceived as opposing fronts, which I don't think they are.

Personally, I think the better path would have been to continue the legacy of an important character that he helped shape. Honoring Chadwick is honoring T'Challa, and vice-versa by continuing the character.

But I do understand Feige and company are in a tough position, no matter what they do there will be people who dislike it.

I think they should've delayed the film to phase 5 and waited to see what the right course of action would be without the momentary emotional weight of the tragedy. I think people would feel different about recasting now compared to when he died, I know I certainly do.
