BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER Star Letitia Wright Addresses The Fallout From Her On-Set Injury

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever star Letitia Wright has shed some light on what fans can expect from Shuri in the upcoming sequel, sharing new details about the on-set accident that happened last year.

Following yesterday's action-packed new Black Panther: Wakanda Forever trailer, all signs point to Shuri becoming the MCU's new Black Panther. That was to be expected, of course, especially for those of you who have read the comic books (where T'Challa's sister took over the mantle when her brother was no longer able to rule).

Talking to Entertainment Weekly, actress Letitia Wright says Shuri has "buried herself in her technology" following her brother's death, and shares her excitement for exploring the character's duality as Princess and scientist.

"We haven't seen that on a major scale, where there's a young Black woman who's a princess, and she's also a scientist," Wright says. "I have this feeling of pride when a young woman comes up to me and says, "Hey, you made me feel smart in school, and you made me feel like I can be in technology alongside a man, and I feel empowered.'"

"That has changed my life forever."

In the same interview, Wright addressed her accident on set last year that saw her forced to take several weeks off from shooting with a shoulder fracture and concussion. "It was an unfortunate situation that set me back a bit, but in that time I surrounded myself with family and friends," she recalls. "Ryan, he was incredibly supportive."

"And it was a moment for me to gain courage that I never had before and I didn't know I had. You know when you go through situations, you're like, 'I didn't know I had this much strength in me until I went through it'? That was my experience. I got the healing that I needed, and I went back on set, and I was determined to not let that limit me."

"I felt like, 'Oh my goodness, what if I can't do the things that I'm used to doing?'" Wright concludes. "But by God's grace, I made it through, and I came back stronger."

There have been rumblings that Wright's alleged anti-vax views caused an issue on set, ultimately resulting in Marvel Studios taking the decision to only make her a temporary Black Panther. Nothing is confirmed on that front, though, and the site didn't ask the actress about those claims. From what we've seen, though, it does look like Shuri will make a great Black Panther.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, directed by Ryan Coogler and produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore, opens in theaters on November 11.

@DrReedRichards - Yeah I thought it was her anti vax views that did lol. Cant shoot if vax is required in the usa for big productions.

Tbh I just want more T’Challa and while I loved Chadwick, the character should have lived on.

@duncboy - exactly. With the x men coming this also means we won't get tchalla and storm together.

@Typhoon20 - do kids look up to Chris Evans or Steve Rodgers?

@Typhoon20 - And why is that? Because she decided not to take a vaccine for a virus that statistically she is essentially at zero risk from?

Yeah, your post does not speak well of you. At all.

If that was all it was then rub some dirt on your shoulder and get back in the game! People get injuries like this all the time in sports, movies or daily life but I've never heard anyone describe the experience like she has. Imagine a football/soccer player coming off an injury saying something similar.

@WarMonkey - ....but she's not an athlete or football player....
WarMonkey
WarMonkey - 10/4/2022, 11:50 AM
@Variant - That's the point because she is playing an athletic superhero character.
Variant

@WarMonkey - Lol. The doctor that told Tua he was good to play just got fired because he let him go back out and play NFL football after sustaining a concussion. Not only did Leticia Wright suffer a concussion, she broke her shoulder. And you're talking shit like rub dirt on it and get back out there? LOL. Even after an athlete recovers from an injury, doesn't mean they're 100%. Look at RG3, dude's career ended because he kept getting back out there and re-injuring himself.

This pseudo masculinity just looks stupid.

WarMonkey - 10/5/2022, 2:06 PM
@Variant - I was an athlete which means I knew lots of female athletes. I've seen some them get worst injuries then me and handle it better too. Heck, my mom just got a caste on her foot cause she has some fractures. She was entertained by the fact it was the first time she ever broke a bone. She's 80 and injured it at boxing class.
Variant
Variant - 10/5/2022, 9:26 PM
@WarMonkey - Dawg...c'mon. Can you or your mom act as well as a hollywood actor? No. Which is okay because not everyone has to be good at everything. So she's mediocre at injury recovery but excellent at acting. (And by mediocre we're talking concussion and broken shoulder, not a stubbed toe.)

What if I came in like psssh...mfer can't even figure out this math problem. You'd say, I'm good at other shit, I don't need to be good at that.

I could see comics Shuri be the Black Panther because they had time to develop her. Nakia would have made more sense in the MCU but I digress.

@bobevanz - I still think Nakia may be wearing the suit by the end of the movie.

@thewanderer -

The Lego reveal says it's Shuri and ONLY Shuri as BP.

(Because Lego is never, EVER wrong.)
thewanderer
thewanderer - 10/4/2022, 8:52 AM
@tylerzero - I'm not saying Shuri doesn't wear the suit at some point, I'm just saying by the end of the movie I think Nakia's wearing it.
mountainman
mountainman - 10/4/2022, 9:55 AM
@thewanderer - I hope so. MCU shuri just doesn’t feel right. I get her being the first to take it on due to the familial line, but she’s a scientist not a fighter. Hopefully she passes it on by the end.
TheSuperMex
TheSuperMex - 10/4/2022, 10:11 AM
@mountainman - Tony Stark was scientist but became a fighter. Why can’t she? We saw her fight in BP.
Blastaar
Blastaar - 10/4/2022, 10:13 AM
@bobevanz - Actually no. In most Kingdoms, if the royal line is threatened or there is no qualifying King or defender. Then the General of the army takes over the throne, temporarily until a qualified King is found. If not then the General remains King/Queen...In this case that would be OKOYE...But Okoye would not be able to take the heart shape herb because it is toxic to people who are not of the royal line, and you can die from ingesting it. You saw how bad it hurt to extract it and to retake it for even T'Challa, who IS of the royal line.
thewanderer
thewanderer - 10/4/2022, 10:15 AM
@mountainman - I think Namor attacks, in the spur of the moment Shuri, while already in the lab, puts on the suit to join the fight. Probably gets whooped, and by the end of the movie Nakia (or maybe Okoye) is taking up the mantle.
thewanderer
thewanderer - 10/4/2022, 10:18 AM
@TheSuperMex - his suit had weapons on top of weapons. You never see Iron Man do much hand-to-hand combat.

And when he did, he was usually getting his butt kicked (Cap, Bucky, Thanos, etc...)
mountainman
mountainman - 10/4/2022, 12:22 PM
@TheSuperMex - Iron Man is a different kind of hero than Black Panther is. The person in the BP role has to be good at combat. The person in an Iron Man suit doesn’t.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 10/5/2022, 2:33 PM
@bobevanz - Nakia being BP makes no sense and would feel forced.
