Ryan Coogler Will Return To Write & Direct Marvel's Upcoming BLACK PANTHER Sequel

After the billion-dollar success of Black Panther earlier this year, Marvel Studios is bringing back ace director Ryan Coogler to helm the sequel, which is eyeing a late 2019/early 2020 start date.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed today that Marvel Studios has quietly closed a deal with Black Panther helmer Ryan Coogler to write and direct the hotly anticipated sequel, which will star Chadwick Boseman (Avengers: Infinity War) as the King of Wakanda.

Coogler is expected to begin penning the script early next year with a projected late 2019 or early 2020 production start date in mind. Marvel was actually looking to resign Coogler immediately following the film's record-breaking opening, but Coogler and his camp didn't want to rush into a decision and wisely chose to take some time before striking a deal, which ultimately was signed under the radar not too long ago.

An official release date has not been announced, but based on the production timeline, it seems probable that the studio may once again be eyeing a February release for the sequel as they've already booked February 12, 2021 for an Untitled Marvel Film. It should be noted though that this date is far from confirmed and is just one of nine potential dates Marvel Studios has reserved between 2020 and 2022, although it does seem to be the most likely candidate if the studio is looking to repeat the blockbuster success of the original.

Coogler is currently in the midst of developing his next directorial venture, Wrong Answer, which will star frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan (Erik Killmonger) in the lead role as a math teacher in Atlanta, who is scandalized when he looks to get funding for his school by altering his students' test scores. Coogler will also be serving as an executive producer on Creed II - a sequel he opted not to direct - and will be a producer on LeBron James' Space Jam sequel.

Glad to see it's official now. Just spend a bit more on that CGI budget, Coog.

@L0RDbuckethead - Ryan Coogler doesn't manage the budget, that's what the producer is for.

@ChangAlang - For real. Even though the Rhinos from W'Kabi's tribe are something ripped straight from the comics, the execution could've been much better.

That part, and the scene when T'Challa and Killmonger were fighting down in the Vibranium mine, was really my only CGI complaint.

@Deonox - You know what I mean.

Coogler definitely had a hand in composing that Rhino scene. Just because he wasn't behind the computer doing the CGI work doesn't mean he wasn't heavily involved and responsible for how it turned out.

@L0RDbuckethead - The film had a bigger budget than both The Jungle Book and War For the Planet Of The Apes.

The horrendous CGI must be due to poor management on Marvel Studios and Coog’s behalf (something that is common for directors with litle experience with CGI and big budget films). The result is that VFX houses have little time to get things done.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind for Marvel to revisit this film (and some scenes in Infinity War) and retouch the CGI a bit. I know that it can end badly (Star Wars), but it could be worth a try.

@RocknRolla - id love to be in that meeting.

Coogler: ok, glad we can agree on a budget so i can officially come on to direct the sequel. So i know you just had black panter in infinity war. Any developments with him i should know about?

@ALF9001 - Totally agree about the mismanagement of the budget.

But hey you never know. In 10 more years they might do exactly like Lucas did with the OT (minus all the bullshit he added in, I'm talking purely CGI enhancements).

Crazy that that shot didn’t make it as it is into the final film. There was no need to completely replace his practical suit with CGI. Same exact problem with Homecoming.
