BLADE: More Details On Yann Demange's Exit; Filmmaker Described As "Difficult To Work With"

Following the news that filmmaker Yann Demange has exited Marvel Studios' Blade reboot, additional details have been revealed about his exit from the movie, including a possible clash with Mahershala Ali.

Marvel Studios announced it was developing a Blade reboot during a memorable Hall H panel at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con. Mahershala Ali hit the stage to close out the panel alongside Kevin Feige, confirming he would play the MCU's Daywalker in a moment which broke the internet.

The pandemic followed, as did a voice cameo in Eternals, but development on the reboot has since hit more than a few stumbling blocks. Blade has lost several creatives, with original director Bassam Tariq leaving over "creative differences."

In terms of writers, Eric Pearson is penning the latest draft after Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Beau DeMayo, Michael Starrbury, Nic Pizzolatto, and Michael Green all took a crack at the screenplay.

Yesterday evening, the reboot was health another blow when the news broke that filmmaker Yann Demange is no longer helming Blade

According to Jeff Sneider, Ali is said to have grown frustrated with the director; while he's considered a talent behind the camera, the report claims Demange is also "difficult to work with."

The scooper adds that he and Marvel Studios parted ways in March; Kevin Feige is said to have been searching for a writer and director ever since, though it could be that they'll eventually get the same person to do both.

The last we heard, Blade will be a grounded, gritty take on the character rather than an effects-laden blockbuster which runs the risk of feeling like more of the same from Marvel Studios. Demange previously confirmed it will be R-Rated and we can't imagine that's changed.

"We’re working on it. That’s the best I could tell you," Ali said of the project last December following reports he'd considered leaving the movie. "I’m really encouraged with the direction of the project. I think we’ll be back at it relatively soon."

"I’m sincerely encouraged in terms of where things are at and who’s on board and who’s leading the way as far as the writing of the script and the directing and all that," the actor added. "So that’s the extent of what I can tell you."

While some feel Blade is cursed, the movie did get caught up in the pandemic and last year's Hollywood strikes, so the fact it's yet to materialise isn't too surprising. Still, it's hard not to be a little concerned, particularly as it's been close to half a decade since Marvel Studios announced it!

Needless to say, we expect Blade to miss its planned November 7, 2025 release date.

LOL, if ya'll think this movie still getting made!

Blade will probably show up at some point, but it won't be a solo movie and Ali will no longer be in lead.

@UniqNo - I really hope so at this point. The first two Blade movies were great. Just consider them cannon and move on with a recast.

If he wasn't busy with a hundred other things already, Chad Stahelski would be my number one "DUH" choice. Would I try to look for a fresh director with a fresh vision? Sure, but I'm not sure they have that luxury at this point. Hell, bring back Del Toro, just get this movie done already.

TCronson - 6/13/2024, 6:02 AM
@Fares - Del Toro is too good for this, he's a well respected Oscar winning director now, there's no chance he'll touch something with even less creative freedom than he had on Blade 2 when he was nobody.

@Fares - he’s currently directing his Frankenstein Adaptation , plus he’s also someone notorious for doing multiple things at once so he might not be able to aswell.

@TCronson - @Fares - i Love both those ideas. itll never happen. Blade 2 was great, imo. Chad would be great for this movie. At this point.... this movie is never coming out

One that, at this point, should never stop.

@FireandBlood - I don't necessarily have a problem with Blade's daughter being in it. But of those past rumors are true and it was going to be a "passing of the torch" type movie, then I'm NOT okay with that.

Blade is a beloved character. The thought of passing his mantle over to his daughter in his first outing is a little crazy. Maybe if they did a trilogy and built to that? I don't know. Blade ages reeeeeeally slowly, so unless they make Blade hundreds of years old I'm not sure why he would ever quit killing vampires

@CorndogBurglar - He can pass the torch, but maybe in like, 10 years after Ali has made 6-8 appearances first. Otherwise what was the point of announcing they landed an Oscar-winning actor so soon?

I still think it was monumentally presumptively stupid for Marvel to get Ali in that pointless voice cameo if the idea of/for the movie was a barely conceived fart whisper at that point. Probably the only post credits scene that will need nowhere. This film isn't happening.

@CLTMAN29 - Probably the only post credits scene that will need nowhere.

IDK, Starfox and Pip in Eternals, Hercules in Thor, Clea in Dr Strange 2 . . . at least Blade was announced before the voice cameo. I'd be shocked if all of those are paid off.

WruceBayne - 6/13/2024, 9:39 AM
@clintthahamster - I think Clea in Doctor Strange 2 is going to be the only one of those post credits scenes to have a payoff. You can forget the other ones.

It’s so strange how we start to hear about these issues after something like this has happened and not before or during , huh?.

Also , Demange had been attached to the project since November of 2022 but it’s only recently Ali had started having issues with him , I don’t buy it.

Just seems like this has become the go-to excuse for scoopers or studios when a director or such departs a big project like this and for me , it gets less believable everytime…

I know Hollywood has its share of assholes but come on man.

Anyway , I just hope this film happens at this point or just shelve it for now and try later on down the line with a different actor likely because it’s starting to feel like with these reports (if true) that Ali might just be hard to please tbh.

Blade:

Half human/half vampire hybrid who's mother was bitten by a vampire when she was pregnant with him

Now he has all of the strengths of vampires and none of their weaknesses

He hunts vampires

Why is this so difficult? Give him a cool villain and make a movie of him killing vampires. It's mind-boggling that they can't get this done. It's like screwing up The Punisher. How do you screw them up?
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 6/13/2024, 7:03 AM
@CorndogBurglar - That's a basic premise/elevator pitch, not a plot. Even all three original Blade movies had more complicated scripts than that.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/13/2024, 8:47 AM
@FinnishDude - I didn't say I was pitching it. All I'm saying is we're not talking about some complicated character. He's half vampire and he hunts vampires. This isn't hard.
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 6/13/2024, 10:11 AM
@CorndogBurglar - I didn't saying you were. I meant that just because you can make a simplistic one sentence describtion of your premise, the actual script is still going to need more substance.
TheRedLeader
TheRedLeader - 6/13/2024, 5:14 PM
@CorndogBurglar - To be fair, what makes Punisher special in comics is the fact that he's not a super hero, but an action hero. When you bring him to the screen (big or small) he enters a media where he's just another action hero, like John Wick or Rambo, in other words, a generic character.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 6/13/2024, 5:30 PM
@TheRedLeader - What's wrong with that, though? I think a movie of him just going up against a mob boss sounds great! In fact, that's when Punisher is at his absolute best in the comics. When he's interacting with power heroes and villains it CAN be cool, but they have to go through some big stretches to have him hang against anyone.

His best series to date is Punisher Max, without question. Because it's brutal, and he's simply fighting the scum of the earth. Mob bosses. Sex traffickers. Drug dealers. Arms dealers.

Give me that Punisher on the big screen any day.

I’ve been thinking about the whole quote from yesterday about how "Getting Blade right is much more important than getting the film out.” We’ve known that Marvel’s barometer hasn’t exactly been perfect lately, so wouldn’t they first need to get the film out in order to know - I mean really know - if they got it right?

I watched the Community the other night where they watch the movie and Britta tries to reconnect with her old boyfriend, Blade. Love how you just hear sword fighting and Blade grunting from the TV.

Surprise surprise, yet another Josh article littered with spelling and grammatical errors;

“Yesterday evening, the reboot was health another blow“

Ridiculous. Pointing out bad writing is not toxic or disrespectful.

Writers who continually do sub par work, like Josh, are disrespectful to readers. Respect goes both ways. Respect your readers.

@MyCoolYoung - “new dudes” hahahahahhaha. Imbecile. As if tenure has anything to do with anything (even though my tenure here is over a decade, so yeah…)

Some of us like to understand the things we’re reading, because some of us actually had an education and know how words should work together. Yeah, everyone makes mistakes, but to consistently do it means you become open to criticism. And Josh is consistent in his badly written articles.

Just film it quickly, cancel it's release and then burn the remains so you can then use it as a tax write off.
